predictions on any of the brewers for a suprisingly great season?

There have been some really big suprises every year. Recently with guys like Casey Mcgehee and even Todd Coffey and a blast from the past like Scotty Po.

For me this is a big toss up. I really want to say that Gomez and even Lucroy are going to have great seasons but my money is on Rickie Weeks.

Weeks seriously tore it last year until his injury. My prediction is that he is amazing and makes the all star team with help from Wisconsin with the final vote.

Any guesses?

I'll go with Manny Parra trusting his stuff a little more, getting some help from Rick Peterson, and getting some better luck and putting together a nice season.

Man, if Parra could turn out to be everything everyone always hoped for him, that would seriously help our playoff chances the next 3-4 years.

I'll go with the combination of a change of scenery, moving to the NL and his underlying stats suggesting growth last year leads to a breakout by Gomez. He won't be a star but he won't be the black hole offensively that he appears to be so far.

I think that Casey McGehee will actually be the surprise player again by slightly improving from this 2009 numbers. Corey Hart will also get back on track.

McGehee may not be quite as good as last season, but I think he'll be very solid again.

 

I also think the LaTroy Hawkins signing is going to be proven a good move for Melvin. I think Hawkins is going to be a great setup man this year.

If McGehee plays like he did last season, Hart reverts back to 2007/1st half 2008 Hart and Parra figures it out with the help of Peterson. I really like our chances.

Its really not a joke mostly because its a contract year. If he wants to get a decent contract to be a starter in this league again, he is going to have to make the starting rotation and pitch well.

I agree on Parra, but it wouldn't exactly surprise me honestly if he just started trusting his stuff more. I do think he's the Brewer with the best shot at a colossal turnaround from 2009, though.

I don't know if you know this or not but I'm kind of a big Bush fan around here. People know me. I have many leather... What I'm getting at is that I, too, think the bald and bearded Bush is going to be our second or third best starter this year.

I think this is the year Prince Fielder finally breaks out. But seriously, if Weeks can stay off the DL he will have a great year. He is ready.

 

Jeff Suppan retires after this year. He is set for life thanks to Melvin and Attanasio, and its clear he is no longer effective at the big league level.

I don't think anything Rickie Weeks does is really a surprise even though he hasn't yet. Talent-wise, he's right there with Braun and Fielder. What it will take for him to put together a season that matches his talent is the question. Those numbers are a little extreme though.

 

My surprise is Escobar of course. I think he'll hit .300, steal 35 bases, score 100 runs and slug over .400 and walk away with ROY award. Of course I won't be surprised but most of you will.

 

My pitching surprise will be Claudio Vargas.

Put me down for Escobar as well. I think he will surprise with the bat and mildly disappoint with the glove. His range will be great and he will make the 'wow' play on the regular, but much like Gomez, he will make dumb plays more than he should. Hardy was steady, Escobar will be horribly excellent. That may or may not make sense.

 

Pitching will be Braddock once he gets called up. And I really hope I'm right because I'm a little concerned about Hoffman this year. He just can't last forever...but that is for another thread.

I'm gonna project out a 288/343/401 line for Carlos Gomez with about +15 on the defensive side.

Rickie might be my favorite player on the team, but I worry about his hitting going forward after two wrist injuries. He could still be a solid player, but the gaudy numbers we hoped for at the plate may never materialize.

 

I'll go with Parra. He's extremely talented and as we learned at the end of the season, had a nagging injury most of the year. We learn more from our failures than our successes, so if Parra was a good student last year, he should win the Cy Young this year!

Weeks I'm on the other side. I think he's going to hit a lot of pop ups this year and have issues with wrist strength. Didn't he struggle the first year back when he hurt the other wrist? I'm pulling for him the most but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'm going out on a limb and will predict that Gregg Zaun will have a career season at the plate at age 39.

I'll take Bush and Hart. Hopefully Hart is doing it for us.

 

Bush, if healthy, might be our 2nd or 3rd best pitcher. I don't think Hart has benefited much from being moved up and down the order. Hopefully they just stick him in that 5 or 6 hole and tell him to hit it hard somewhere and let him use his speed on the bases as well. Maybe (hopefully) he's this year's Mark Reynolds.

Mat Gamel is going to have a gigantic year. Some combination of Weeks/McGehee injuries will allow Mat to get 450 ABs and he'll post a .290/.365/.500 line.

I think he is gonna have a monster year, a 30 homer year.

I'm going to go with Carlos Villanueva. He had a disasterous year last year and I think he's got a good head on his shoulders. I believe he comes in strong with a sub 2.5 era.

 

Offensively, I like Weeks. I've said it before and I'll say it again....if he bats in the 2 hole or the 5 hole...he'll be an All-Star.
