Searching the scraps: One more "just in case" minor league deal for depth?

No thanks on Kotsay. I'd rather take my chances on Brandon Boggs as my 5th outfielder, or bring in a guy that can hit like Jermaine Dye to be our top ph and backup corner outfielder.

Too bad we didn't sign Jorge Cantu or Willie Harris, I would have been happy bringing on either of those guys. I wouldn't mind seeing Willie Aybar brought in either.

I don't think you can assume Kotsay would take either Boggs or Dickerson's roster spot. It's far more likely that they want a veteran lefty bat to assume prime PH duties instead of Gamel and they want Gamel playing everyday. Remember they took a run at Hinske earlier. Kotsay is a decent veteran bench option. He's been there (72 postseason AB's).

Cubs apparently are trying to resurrect that 2003 team by signing another member who was in the scrap heap, Todd Wellemeyer. Amazingly, he got a major league deal, albeit one that is not guaranteed.

I really would like to sign Washburn as our sixth starter. I'm keen on Rogers being in AAA all year and also in keeping Manny in a steady consistent bullpen role. That said, we need a sixth starter. Hopefully Washburn is at least being discussed.

I wouldn't mind DD signing a MiLB deal as our sixth starter either. The thing that worries me about Washburn is that he didn't pitch for anyone last year. Granted, the same could be said about DD...

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."
