If they just wanted someone to throw simulated games to Weeks they could have called up McClendon to do that and not had to start Fiers clock or make any 40-man roster moves. They obviously want to take a good look at him.

Also after the meltdown on Thursday I think they see the reason for extra bullpen arms. You can burn a relief pitcher if your starter gets in trouble and is the next batter up without trying to get him to make it out of the inning and risk giving up six runs.

If Narvy can't go more than 5 then we need another pitcher, but not calling up Gamel really makes you wonder what is wrong not to have a power bat off the bench.

I'm confused how the simulated game matters to call-up. Couldn't anyone throw the simulated game without being on the roster. The two things may have happened at the same time but he was added to the 40 man/active roster because they plan to see what he has.

They were going to call up another pitcher, and waited because Fiers just pitched the other day, so was unavailable. They said in the McClendon piece that he was one of three under consideration, assumed the others were Wily and Fiers.

Yes, anyone could be brought in to throw to Rickie, without being on the roster.
