But why would the Brewers do it? As long as he didn't reach that number of games finished or whatever it was they had no reason to worry about his option coming into play. Regardless of whether or not he's a type A, someone would sign him.

I think the Brewers did it as: part grievance insurance (not saying KRod would win), part as injury insurance for Axford and KRod would actually get the number of games finished in, and part to make KRod happy via money. But it would be nice if the unwritten part of that deal was the Brewers would offer arby and he wouldn't accept.

I just don't see Boras or KROD as the type to do a handshake deal where they can't under any circumstances accept arby. If it's in their best interests, I am positive they'd want that option.
