R.A. Dickey signs with Braves; 1-year, $8M plus option

I'm excited! Not because RA Dickey is joining the Braves, but that the Hot Stove is cooking up!

 

Dickey (who is a former Brewer farm hand) gets a 1 year deal for $8M, plus the Braves hold an option year at $8M with a $500,000 buyout.

 

Not bad for a 42 year old pitcher who didn't establish himself until he was 35.

That guy who pitches for the Red Sox and I seem to remember a September callup for someone last year threw a knuckle.

The Rays have Eddie Gamboa, who is an older guy who learned the knuckleball in the past couple of years. They also have a few knuckleballers in their minor league system. I think they have Charlie Haeger as a minor league coach or coordinator. They also have Brent Honeywell, who doesn't throw a knuckle, but he's one of the few brave souls who throws a screwball.

Remember Fernando Valenzuela and his screwball. Man, that was a pitch. Dude threw that all the time. Lasted about 6-7 years living off that thing.
