Chapman from mlb.com

MEDIUM, WIRY, WELL PROPORTIONATELY BUILD. SLOPING SHOULDERS. BUILD SIMILAR TO MARK KOTSAY. SLIGHT CROUCH, SEMI-OPEN STANCE. GOOD SETUP & APPROACH. POWER MORE ALLEY TYPE. ARM STRENGTH SHOULD BE AVG. SOME OUTF INSTINCTS. RUNS EASY, BETTER UNDERWAY. HAS ENOUGH DEFENSIVE ABILITY NOW & BAT SHOULD GET BETTER W/ ADDED STRENGTH. A GOOD ATHLETE.

Chapman, a key recruit for Auburn, has raw power potential and can hit the best fastball thanks to good bat speed. He's an average runner and thrower, but his bat is a question because he doesn't handle offspeed stuff well or recognize breaking balls.

So basically he's a younger Brady Clark..

I think this might be the Brewers first tough sign as the brewerfan.net profile says that he should honor his commitment to Auburn.

This will be a good opportunity to show how Milwaukee uses its profit sharing money from the Yanks and Co. on their draft and minor league system.

not another center fielder but he sounds like a guy who could have gone a few rounds earlier.

Do you think Chapman has a reasonable chance to sign? This seems like a curious pick to me if they don't have some form of pre-draft agreement with him.

Whats with all the "sloping shoulders" talk?? Now I have to go home and look in the mirror to see how mine rate. I hope we didnt pass on Bailey due to the wrong slant of his shoulder.

"Stephen has been rated as one of the top 30-40 players in the country by some publications. He is an outstanding player. He is a left-handed hitter who is one of the more polished and advanced hitters we've ever signed."

I've had Valiquette's profile up since about the 3rd round, fully expecting him to be the Canadian pitcher the Brewers drafted. (He went a few picks later in the 7th.)

BA doesn't have a profile on Langille, as they considered him the 24th best player in Canada. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif

A note on the Brewers 8th round pick, from BA:

Quote:
Long Beach State's best prep recruit is stocky LHP Brandon Parillo, whose worth climbed steadily during the spring as he showed an ability to maintain velocity on a 90-91 mph fastball and spin a breaking ball

For MassBrew's sake, I'll say that he's from Huntington Beach, CA. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Is this a draft, or a dog show?

Indeed. It's so funny to read these scouting profiles after reading Moneyball, 'cause I can't help but picture the "fat scout" spitting out these sentence fragments while chewing tobacco and rubbing his gut.

The scouts are underappreciated and they work really hard, but it's hard not to find fault with their English skills and their proclivity for treating players like meat. Good stuff.

One of the Packers' draftees was described on a site as having a 'nice bubble.' Brings to mind the strip poker scene described as being in the new David Sedaris book...

Not much from BA:

Quote:
RHP Derek DeCarlo, has been the Golden Panthers' ace for most of the last three seasons (ceding the job to Blue Jays second-rounder Josh Banks last year) but has an extensive medical history and may just be a good senior sign next year.

Bill, I'm guessing the Brewers took Chapman in the top 10 rounds because they believe they can sign him. They may have to give him a little more than slot value, similar to Wilhelmsen 2 years ago, but I would guess that he'll get signed sooner or later.

Lots of HS picks, and a short lefty. Jack Z. wins.
