Bandy was DFA'd last year around May 25 after hitting just .188/.268/.266 in 64 AB's.

 

Pina's hitting just .125/.243/.156 in half that many AB's.

 

Backup catcher isn't a huge priority but I would think Manny has to pick it up over the next month and he's looked awful recently. His K rate is way up.

 

Now watch him go 4 for 4 today....

I don’t think Pina is going to be DFA’d if that’s what you’re suggesting. He does not have any options available so that isn’t a possibility. He has put together a couple good years and is fantastic defensively. He will hit better. He only has 32 at bats this season with very sporadic playing time. It’s tough to be sharp when playing so little.

Pina is a much better defensive catcher than Bandy. I don't think he's in any danger of losing his 25-man roster spot. David Freitas just doesn't seem to have enough of an MLB resume to unseat Pina.

Too good defensively to worry about. Given the limited ABs he's getting, literally four more times on base over the past six weeks would skew his offense from "non-existent" to "good backup catcher". Not enough to roll the dice that Freitas or Nottingham can play near the same defense and would also make a difference offensively.

If he goes 4-4 he will add 100 points to his batting average. Pina >> Bandy defensively and offensively.
