2019 Draft - The ones that got away

Posted

Now that the dust has settled, who is the one (or ones) that the Brewers didn't sign that you were hoping for?

For me it was Myles Austin and/or Carter Rustad. Not being a professional talent evaluator, I liked what I read about them as potential high ceiling prospects.

They did a great job signing as many players as they did, but I am greedy and always want one more.

As a senior he has that ability but I think that the kicker is that he still counts against LA's draft pool budget.

Then it will be interesting to see if this ends up being the same scenario for Brewers unsigned selection LHP Dan Wirchansky who was a senior from Pace University.

It seems like if a senior doesn't have to sign with the team that drafted him even if a full pick value offer is made, and then is eligible to immediately sign with other teams after the signing deadline then it seemingly presents both possible tampering and leverage issues? A team that realizes it is going to be short on it's bonus pool could start reaching out to "advisors" of some of the better seniors drafted in rounds 11-40 and start negotiating an offer for "if they were to go unsigned", wink, wink.

If the pick counts against bonus pool, then I would think it would have to be a team that has extra bonus pool remaining.

Yes, I meant “short on it’s bonus pool” as in a team that’s not using all of it’s allotted bonus pool money.

If you were a team under your bonus pool budget I’m not sure what would stop you from negotiating with other teams senior selections made after the 11th round. I assume it’s a non-issue, but a seemingly strange loophole nevertheless.
