I don't know how much Arenado has to do with it but Fowler is old and bad so it certainly doesn't hurt them to lose him anyway.

The Cardinals freed up a roster spot, so it’s a win for them in that sense. The only way they were going to move Fowler was by either eating his salary or finding a trade partner trying to move a bad contract of their own.

Yea, it seems like the Cards wanted to give the young guys a shot in the outfield and Fowler wanted to go to a team he could play on.

I was going to call this one of the worst contracts of all time, but I guess Fowler was actually decent the first year of the deal.

Angels only owe $1.75M of Fowler's salary. Cardinals are paying $12.5M. Total salary dump. They clearly wanted to move on from him.

 

Cardinals got 2.0 bWAR for $82.5M. Pretty brutal.
