Game Thread (5/31/2022): Brewers (Lauer) at Cubs (Steele) - 7:05 PM CDT

I am hopeful for another excellent start by Lauer but an ounce concerned by his one strikeout in five innings, last outing. Lauer was solidly striking out more than a batter per inning, prior to his most recent start.
 

Anyone can have a rough start, so I will remain optimistic. It is nice that a rough start is 5 IP with only 2 ER.

There is a significant threat of thunderstorms delaying or forcing postponement of tonight’s game.

In the short term a day off wouldn’t be the worst thing for the Brewers as it would eliminate the need for an emergency starter tomorrow. I would assume they wouldn’t try to play another doubleheader tomorrow.

The downside would be that the Brewers last visit to Wrigley comes in the middle of a stretch in which the Brewers have a series with the Cardinals and two with the Dodgers with no off days. Squeezing in a doubleheader there would not be ideal.

Will have to be that or someone called up for an emergency start, which would probably turn into a bullpen day with whoever isn’t used tonight filling the middle innings.

Who did they drop after the doubleheader?

If that Strzelecki guy is still on the active roster that would be my guess. 
 

With Small sent back to Nashville it looks like the plan will be to use Houser, Burnes, Ashby, and Lauer against the Padres heading into the Monday off day. If Woodruff can get off the IL with a minimum stay they might not need a sixth starter for a while.

Looks to be a very tight strike zone this game.  A few borderline strikes that should have been called strikes in the Urias AB.

The position players on the bench are Narvaez, Peterson, and Wong.  Not a lot of options, especially if he’s looking to give anyone a day off. 
 

Also, Steele’s splits show him to be much better against lefties than righties. Shouldn’t that be considered too?

Speaking of Wong, if he's not available by tomorrow, I would seriously consider putting him on the IL and bringing up Turang. Turang has spent more than enough time at AAA and deserves an opportunity. Also, with our recent injury issues, we can't afford to be stashing guys on the active roster while we wait for them to heal up.

Steele is one of the least impressive major leaguers I’ve ever watched. Throws two pitches, neither are good. Doesn’t have a particularly difficult arm slot. Reminds me of a very poor man’s Lester. Yet Yelich strikes out on a pitch near his face…
