This is another important outing for Russ Smith. After his best outing of the season versus Beloit, he was shelved for 19 days and then, predictably, only pitched 3 innings his last outing (June 26th) vs Quad Cities. Is he still on a tightened pitch count? Either way, it would be really great if he continued to build positive momentum.

INF Jhonny Severino is now 11-for-15 over his last 3 contests after today’s 4-for-5 2 run, 1 rbi, 1 double outing. Stay hot young man!?

The DSL Brewers 1 lost today, however, 14-9 after conceding a run in the 8th and 4 more in the 9th frame.

In addition to fan favorite, Luis Lara and the aforementioned Severino, it would appear INF Arnys Rodriguez is one to keep an eye on. It is also worth noting: the combined offensive output of 17 yo catchers Roman La Torre and Ludwin Tejada might merit more attention as the season progresses.

Two 24 yo pitchers are turning heads in the ACL. Given their ages, one would have to think they may be in line for a promotion this summer if this keeps up:

-Leoni De La Cruz continues to be a pitcher to monitor on the Brewers ACL Blue. 2 2/3 more scoreless innings today. 0 hits, 1 bb, 3 k’s.

To date: 9 2/3 ip over 7 games, 12 k’s, 3 bb, 1 hb, 0.156 BAA, 0.86 WHIP

-Meanwhile, recent signee RHP Ryan Middendorf continues to do everything and anything you’d like to see as a late entry into the ACL for the ACL Brewers Gold.

After today’s 3 ip, 0 hits, 0 bb’s, 5 k performance (his longest and most dominant yet), he maintains his 0.00 era over 5 games, 7 1/3 ip, 10 k’s, 1 bb, 0.111 BAA, 0.55 WHIP

Low-A Carolina has RHP Fernando Olguin (5.27 season ERA) on the mound, as the team tries to take a 4-1 series lead at home against Fayetteville. Hot-hitting C Jeferson Quero (.939 June OPS) returns to the lineup:

High-A Wisconsin is also up 3-1 in its series at home against Cedar Rapids, with LHP Russell Smith (5.53 season ERA) getting the start tonight. 3B Zavier Warren comes in with an 8-game hitting streak:

Our big offensive prospects have been struggling a bit lately - Wiemer, Valerio, Chourio, etc. Mitchell is nowhere to be found. Turang has been fairly consistent all year in Nashville but has hit for virtually no power.

AA Biloxi has lost 2 in a row, so needs a win tonight at home against Mississippi to claim a 3-2 series lead. RHP Noah Zavolas (6.34 season ERA) needs a bounce back game. CF(?!) Yeison Coca has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games:

Nashville is giving RHP Marcus Walden his first AAA start since July 21st last year, as the Sounds seek a 3-2 series lead over Indianapolis at home. SS Brice Turang has reached base in 14 of his last 15 games:

It’s worth it if you haven’t read through Jim’s report from yesterday (go ahead and read it!) BUT Ashton McGee hit a 108 mph 475 foot BOMB last night as part of the T-Rat’s 8-run 1st. I’d be hard-pressed to find a bomb hit further in 2022:

His double later in the game (would have been a triple had he not fallen on the basepaths) also left at 107 mph. He’s too good a hitter to not get hot. Here’s hoping for an awesome July!

RHP Fernando Olguin is dealing through 5 complete ip so far (only his second time through 5 since his call up!). Other than a solo HR shot he has conceded merely 2 hits and 1 bb and just finished his half of the fifth with two punch outs. He has 6 k’s total on the day.

And RHP Edwin Jimenez is on in relief in the 6th inning of the still 1-1 game. That should save bullpen arms and keep opposing bats silenced (knock on wood). Mendez has 3 of Carolina's 4 hits. Grab a win, young men!

Jackson Chourio smashed his 9th HR of his season

and Oswel Leones hit a 2-out rbi and the Mudcats now lead 3-2 in the 7th. There is danger on the basepaths, however, as RHP Edwin Jimenez saw a lead-off single, stolen base and double turn into the Woodpeckers’ 2nd run. There is one down but that man is still standing on 2B. AND, just like that Edwin gets the fly out strike em’ out to escape the jam!

RHP Noah Zavolas continues his rough 2022 by conceding 7 runs here on 8 hits through a mere 1 1/3 innings.

Woooooof!?

The first 7 hits were singles. It's like death by a million paper cuts. Darn it. And Wiemer K'd in a 3-pitch, 3-whiff at-bat. Hope he turns a corner today anyway.

Just when I was lured back into the promise of a Biloxi stretch of above 0.500 baseball they classically inch us ever so closely to 0.500 ball. The pain is real?

Russell Smith sailed through the first 2 2/3 innings before conceding a first run to Cedar Rapids.

Tyler Black then walked and scored on a Tristan Peters single to tie it back up 1-1 in the 3rd inning.

In Nashville, 5 first inning singles have given Marcus Walden a nice 3-0 early cushion.

Jimenez gave up runs in the 7th and 8th innings, but closed out the Mudcat win in style by striking out the final 4 batters. Carolina 4, Fayetteville 3.

Meanwhile, that 3-0 cushion is gone in Nashville. We trail 7-3 in the 2nd inning (still with only 1 out), the last 4 on a grand slam. Sorry, Marcus.

A Tyler Black RBI double has given Wisconsin a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning. It appears Russell Smith will continue into the 5th inning.

LHP Andy Otero has come in to relieve Walden in Nashville. Down 7-3, still in the 2nd inning.

Biloxi scored a run. So there’s that. Just 11 more to go, down 12-1.

Nashville responds with 3 runs in the 2nd inning, the biggest hit being David Dahl’s 2-run double. The deficit is only 8-6.

Wisconsin extends its lead to 4-1 with 2 runs in the 5th inning, INF Jose Acosta delivering a key RBI single.

Russell Smith - 6 innings, 81 pitches, 1 run, 3 hits, 6 Ks. Sweet! 4-1 Timber Rattlers thus far. RHP Christian Tripp is on in relief.

And recently-acquired INF Patrick Dorrian has smacked a solo homer to bring Nashville back within one at 8-7 in the 3rd inning.

2 runs in the 7th off of Tripp. 3 runs in the 8th off of James Meeker. And suddenly Wisconsin trails 6-4.

Newly-assigned C Brent Diaz has entered for Mario Feliciano in the 4th inning. I hope this was pre-planned. Sounds trail 8-7.

Regardless, I got my wish: Russ Smith is stacking success!

(Peaks above...I see Daniel was on the case!)

The Rattlers have tied it up here in the bottom half of the eighth off the bat of Tyler Black (rbi dub) and Darrien Miller (shallow pop fly Anthony Pinero beat on a daring take-off). With one down after the sac fly, Black advanced to third on a Joe Gray Jr. groundout to short and Tristan Peters pulled a weak grounder to 2B on an 0-2 count. The score remains tied at 6 heading to the ninth!
