Sal Frelick - Our Steven Kwan?

There's also potential draft pick compensation tied to opening day rosters for top prospects.  Which I think is a why you will see frelick and Mitchell on opening day.

Yelich is the highest paid player on the team and is still a good hitter(111 OPS+), he'll be in the lineup

Yes, I mean he would be DH otherwise.  I like Frelick and Yelich as 1-2 at the top of the order.  But with the Renfroe trade, it would appear starting in LF will be the assumption for Yelich, as I can't see relying on 3 rookies (and don't want to start Taylor).

I know they put that incentive in to try and impact the service time manipulation of some clubs but the setup is so screwy..... Only if ranked on certain lists.... Only if in top 100....

Steven Kwan had a great season & was top 3 in the AL ROY & spent the entire year in the majors....   but no compensation for CLE.

Mitchell has already been up and playing (with success) so I doubt he will be back down on OD.  Frelick, I'm not so sure, though I'm excited to see him play.  I would suspect he is a ROY candidate at least if he is up all year.

I see a lot of talk about rookies being bad the first year, but that isn't always true (mostly, but not always).  I'd give Frelick:

  • 25% chance of being worse than Renfroe (based on 2023's stats)
  • 50% chance of matching Renfroe - trading SLG for OBP value
  • 25% chance of exceeding Renfroe

Next year, I'd give Frelick 95% chance of exceeding Renfroe's value (2024 stats).

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I agree but all that tells me is they're not that concerned about going through the rigamarole of service time manipulation with him. If Frelick is seen as a guy they want to play the game with they likely will.

For the record, I lean towards not playing around with service time manipulation, just bring up the guys that are ready when you think they're ready. If their value explodes to the point you "regret" not waiting he becomes a trade chip.

I sort of agree but when you are talking about an entire extra for about 2 weeks it's way too logical to leave the guy in the minors for those 2 weeks. I hate that the system is set up that way
