    I suspect that the pending labor dispute (after the 2026 season) will impact the thinking of many clubs and players. Many players might see this as a final chance to cash in big before the landscape changes. Many clubs might be wary of spending too much if labor dispute (lockout or strike) wipes out a chunk of the 2027 season...

    Just FYI - if Jacob M finishes in top 3 of the NL RoY voting this year he gets credit for a full year of service time in 2025 (not just the time of call up to the end of the year). That was what happened with Tanner Bibee in CLE back in 2023. IMHO - both sides need to know if he finishes the year in the top 3 of RoY voting (or not) as that impacts the math and how Free Agent much time is being bought out with any extension. Additionally you also want to see how much "prize pool" money Jacob gets. One of the reasons OF Steven Kwan has declined extension overtures in CLE is he has gotten extra monies each year due to winning Gold Gloves and making the All-Star team. Working in MKE favor - the upcoming end to the CBA. There have been rumblings that contract structure and contract limits could be happening with the next CBA (and likely work stoppage). Some players (like the aforementioned Bibee) have signed pre-arb extension deals to have the security in place before this CBA expires..

    The 1899 Cleveland Spiders of the National League are starting to take notice. Feel free to research the Spiders but here is a short synopsis: 20-134 over 154 game season. Club finished the season playing home games in the "away" parks as they couldn't draw anyone to come watch the poor play. As for the "why" the poor play, the owners also got involved in the St. Louis Cardinals ownership. Spiders were strip-mined of any talent in favor of the Cardinals. Club folded after the year and then an AL club got placed in the city (eventually called Indians then Guardians).

    Sorry, I don't share your optimism to get that much back (part in bold above) in a return package.. The valuations for trade to be done has changed quite a bit over the years. I could see a single top 100 plus another piece or two depending on how close to the majors those pieces are.

    MKE will get a greater return for Peralta if he is dealt before this deadline then waiting for the offseason as the acquiring club has Peralta for 2 tries at the post-season instead of only 1. I get that people don't want to give up on this season & a possible chance at the post-season but sometimes the better route is to focus on next year & the season after then stubbornly holding onto a slim (& fading) chance in the present. The white flag this year could allow for some of the kids in the minors to get their feet wet in the majors this year so they can do better in 2026 & 2027..

    I realize Brewer fans will not like hearing/ reading this but if Freddy P has truly rejected extension talks, then MKE should begin the shopping process NOW and look to have him dealt @7/1/25. Getting him moved sooner than the deadline helps to inflate the value as the acquiring team gains an extra 4 to 5 starts (compared to waiting for end of July/ trade deadline).

    Thanks for the clarifications. Honestly I forgot the Brewers had included its Comp Pick in the deal with Boston earlier this year To clarify my point from earlier: unlike other sports where picks can be dealt multiple times and even re-acquired by the original team, the baseball Comp picks dealt cannot be dealt a 2nd time (even going back to the original team that sent it away),

    unless I'm missing something, Boston doesn't get a competitive balance pick and if Boston did acquire one in trade from someone else, that pick is unable to be dealt a 2nd time...

    IMHO Highly doubtful. The QO cost for this year was $21M & that number will go up with larger contracts being signed (Soto, Fried). Lets be conservative and suggest its only $22M next off-season. Can you see this ownership & FO spending $66M for three 1 year offers? Even if free agency is an option, would all 3 players turn that down?? Remember, by rule a player can only be subject to a QO 1 time during their career & some clubs do not pursue those players with a rejected QO that year. Some players have accepted a QO because they know their entry in free agency will be better/ easier if they dont have to deal with that tag attached.

    That was my understanding as well. If healthy enough now I have to wonder if there were a couple of underlying problems for him with the way CLE did things. He is a master of getting the most out of his club & makes Cinci a much bigger threat to win the NL Central division title in at least 2025 & 2026.

    There are reports that the Reds are hiring Terry "Tito" Francona to be their next manager. Announcement to be on Friday 10/4/24 If true, this make the division a lot tougher for the Crew moving forward...

    Just coming by to chime in on the move. Civale can be very inconsistent at times. He would go a few starts looking to be on par with teammate Shane Bieber and then not make it out of the 3rd inning for a start or 2. Fun note: Civale and Bieber were taken in the same draft by CLE (Civale in the 3rd round of 2016 and Bieber in the 4th round). I wish Civale well, but it seems MKE will need to do some work with him to get back to the "good Civale". Former local MLB pitcher Brian Anderson does a weekly Friday interview segment with one of the CLE sportstalk radio stations. Currently Brian is doing TV color analysis for Tampa Bay so since Civale was a former CLE pitcher in Tampa, the trade came up & was discussed. 1st: Brian noted there was no rumbling of the Civale deal in advance. Normally they pick up something, but this time was pure silence. That suggests it came together very fast. 2nd: Tampa was targeting Barrios as the trade return. They feel he is a likely major league regular (not player, but regular) in 3 years. 3rd: Tampa has a couple more pitchers beyond Shane Baz returning from injury this month so Tampa might be open to moving 1 or 2 more starting pitchers this month,

    I get where your coming from and can agree with your general premise. The exemption to my understanding is Mr Wrong Call Angel H. He has so many blatantly wrong calls & bad mistakes over the years that he is making a mockery of the profession & his continued employment is a stain upon the rest of the group.

    How he remains employed as an umpire is still baffling. If the umpire scorecards suggests he had a good game behind the plate I have to question how good that grading/ tracking system really is.

    Hey I get it. There are likely 27 teams that would want to trade for JRam (exceptions being Atlanta & Boston). That said chances he would become available are rather small. Like winning the main PowerBall jackpot with a single ticket of 5 bucks.

    With the news about Cole going onto the shelf for a couple of months today for the NY Yankees, I'm a little surprised that the ChiSox pulled the trade trigger today. Kinda figured they would push the bidding up for a couple more days before finalizing its deal (to anyone).

    Clevinger should be in the "tread carefully/ buyer beware" classification. While the article briefly noted the alleged domestic violence and child abuse issue last year with the ChiSox, it wasn't the 1st time he was a clubhouse issue. For those unaware back in 2020 he cause quite the stir breaking the Covid protocols and then sticking up for a "caught" Zach Plesac before Clevinger's own involvement was uncovered. The CLE clubhouse was livid with both players (Clevinger & Plesac) considering the health issues of Francona (he ended up stepping away for the rest of the season shortly after) & Cookie Carrasco (under a year removed from missing time due to his battle with leukemia). Word has it that long time vet Oliver Perez stood up in the locker room & demanded the FO take action against both Clevinger & Plesac or he would retire right then & there. I'm not suggesting Clevinger be in the same grouping as his best buddy Trevor Bauer, but it would be wrong to think any item in the ChiSox clubhouse was a 1 time blip on the radar. So again - tread carefully/ buyer beware.

    I'm wishing Haase well & good fortune. He came up in the CLE and barely got a cup of coffee before being sent over to Detroit where he got some opportunities and even caught a combine no-no for the Tigers. He ended up back in CLE last season and struggled big time in limited chances as Bo Naylor eventually got called up and seized the C position. I thought Haase & Fry would be capable backups to Bo this year but Eric elected free agency & eventually signed with MKE. While Eric might be willing to spend time in the minors during 2024 it is important to remember that Haase is out of options (as noted earlier by markedman5). Another team with a catching need could place a waiver claim on Eric if/when MKE tries to move him to AAA as Quero gets called up.

    I am surprised to see Tobias Myers listed as a possible R5 protection. I would urge caution as I see him as a bit of Fool's Gold. He was already added to the Tampa 40 man years ago, got traded to the Cleveland at 40 man roster deadline in 2021 (for Junior Caminero no less) and pitched like dung to be sent away from CLE & its 40 man/ minor league system. IF Tobias has really turned it around again & found himself, power to him but I would be very careful.

    I know a few posters were interested in having Stephan Vogt return to MKE in a coaching role next season, but its looking like Vogt is getting multiple interviews for managerial openings (San Fran & a 2nd interview with Cleveland this week).. Even if Vogt doesn't land one of those 2 openings, its clear others around the league have taken notice of Vogt. MKE might need to move real fast (like before 11/1/23) if it hopes to land him in some role.

    I realize the idea of a comp pick is not appealing as many fans feel a trade of Burnes would (should) net multiple players, but a couple aspects to consider: 1) any other team acquiring Burnes during the off season (or at the trade deadline) has to be willing to give up multiple players. As fans we might feel that is easily attained but in the end it still takes another club to be willing to do that. 2) the comp pick also comes with additional bonus pool money (for the 2025 draft). Not all of that bonus money needs to be spent on that single pick, it can be used on that selection and others depending on how MKE approaches that pick and the draft. My guess is the comp pick would be between rounds 1 & 2 (since MKE is not a tax paying club & it receives competitive balance selections) and a pick in that range should have a bonus amount around $1M. That means roughly $1,049,999 to be able to spend on 1 or more selections. That additional money could impact not only completion of more signings but also impact who MKE actually selects at different points in that draft.

    LAD might well have preferred Adames or Tim Anderson & found the price tags to be unreachable, but they still walked onto the used car lot and drove away with an old Yugo & an old Pinto. Both are far cries from what they wanted. And unlike some old cars where parts can be mixed & matched, its a lot harder to Frankenstein a good SS from the parts of Kiki, Amed & M Rojas...
