If we're dropping any pre-expansion era player into today's game and expect them to succeed with modern conditioning and training, I'd put money on either Ted Williams or Willie Mays, for wildly different reasons.

I interpreted this question to be who would be the biggest upgrade over who the Brewers currently have at that position.  For that reason I went with Mike Schmidt as 3B is arguably the Brewers weakest position.  Historic great both offensively and defensively at the position and strong against both LHP (career .990 OPS) and RHP (career .880 OPS).  Arguably the biggest upgrade in terms of total WAR the Brewers would have in the starting lineup.  Allows Urias to platoon at 2B and add value at that position too.

Strong consideration to Willie Mays, but not quite as big of an upgrade over what I believe Frelick can produce and I think his speed is a tad overrated - career 338 SBs to 103 CS isn't a good ratio.  Also, OFs rarely are able to move to the infield except for 1B, so displacing one of the current OFs moves a good player to the bench and doesn't add as much value as adding a 3B.

Babe Ruth's WAR would get killed by defensive metrics. (A bit sarcastic, but probably true.)
