High-A Wisconsin seeks to go up 2-0 in their 3-game series in Beloit, with 21-year old RHP Cameron Wagoner (1.83 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 in 19 2/3 IP last season) getting today's start. LF Micah Bello and C Alex Hall are also making their season debuts.

No Brown back to back days. He wasn't put on the IL so I wonder what the issue is.

Last season, in 9 games, C/1B/DH lead-off savant Darrien Miller had absurd production vs these same Sky Carp. Something to the tune of a 0.300 plus BA and OPS well North of 1.000. 2 ding dongs. 8 or so rbi (off the top of my melon). I will be keeping an eye on his capacity to repeat these efforts. Perhaps, he can be the thorn in their sides ala 2022 Drew Lugbauer and Niko Hulsizer (now with Durham at Triple-A) were to our Shuckers.

A Saturday win would give Nashville a 3-2 series lead in Memphis, with 28-year old RHP Pedro Fernandez getting the start in his second appearance for the organization (3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks in his first appearance). LF Tyler Naquin comes in with a 5-game hitting streak:

Per @AdamMcCalvy: "Have no fear about 2022 first rounder Eric Brown Jr. being out of the lineup for the Timber Rattlers' first few games. He has some minor hip tightness but should be playing early next week."

Wagoner catches much too much of the center cut on a 1-2 heater to give up a single rip into right field. On the very next pitch, with the lead-off running Jacob Berry drives another well-hit into the gap in center right field. Both pitches caught way too much of the dead center of the plate. Let's hope Cam can find his better stuff moving forward.

Much better stuff with his third batter as he nails an 0-2 breaking ball with late dip for the K. Berry still on 3B after the triple and there is now one down.

Oh boy, RF Hendry Mendez gets a costly E9 on a very weak fly to the shallow grass in right field. Charging on the play, the announcer felt he lost the ball in the sun. What actually happened was Mendez took his eye off the ball with Berry on third and simply botched the catch off the fringe of his mitt. There was no chance for a throw home as he also fumbled the pick-up after missing the pop out. I feel for Wagoner there. It should be 0-1 Beloit with 2 down. Instead, it is 2-0 Beloit with a man on first and only 1 out.

Alex Hall nabs the runner attempting a steal for the 2nd out. He had him by about 4' with a great throw on a bad jump. Wagoner follows by getting the third out on a fly out to right field where Mendez hauls it in with ease. He'll want that pop fly back but such is life. On to the next, men.

Joe Gray Jr. is seeing the ball well to start 2023 - he grabs his third line drive single into center field and is now 3-for-6 here over two games. Unfortunately, he was nabbed at 2B on an attempted steal on a bang-bang play. The tag may have missed but the throw was good enough to merit a call. Eduardo García strikes out on four pitches on a center cut heater he was quite late on. Ben Metzinger takes a 1-2 count with two down to right field for another quality AB here in Beloit. He's come into the season in prime form. Chirinos will attempt to do some damage with a 3-2 count. And, after a foul ball with the count full he isn't so lucky on the next pitch - a foul tip held onto by the catcher. We're on to the bottom of the 2nd.

The Sounds have grabbed a 2-0 lead here in the 2nd frame with a bevy of singles and a sac fly to left field off the bat of Andruw MonasterioEddie Alvarez continues his fine hitting form of early 2023 with the rbi single driving in Singleton.

The Sky Carp are aggressive early in the count on Wagoner and are taking advantage. On an inside heater, the lead-off here in the 2nd results in the 3rd hit for the Sky Carp. Micah Bello struggles corraling the ball on a strange high hop and the batter nabs second by a hair on the throw into the bag. A lead-off double.

A beautiful breaking ball on the outer half on a 1-2 pitch gives Wagoner his 2nd K of his outing. Man on 2nd base. One down. With the runner at second taking off on the grounder to short, Eduardo García makes the smart read and rifles an accurate throw to third where Metzinger lays the tag down with smooth ease. Two down. And, Metzinger then charges a weak grounder to third and rips an accurate throw to first base for the third out. After the lead-off double (on a solid pitch - hats off to the swing), Wagoner definitely started dialing it in. On to the top half of the third.

Alex Hall is putting on a throwing clinic. He just nabbed his second runner with a web gem. Unbelievable throw. However, it would appear Eduardo García may have been injured on the slide. The runner appeared to go head first into his lower body.

3-run home run jack alert. On a two out, 0-1 count, Alex Jackson absolutely obliterates a breaking ball center cut and in over the wall and possibly into the streets again (430' by my eyes) over the wall in left center. It's 5-0 Sounds.

I'm starting to see why we stuck with Jackson despite an unproductive, injury-challenged 2022!

This is how the Cardinals' AAA affiliate cost themselves a run to end the bottom of the 2nd inning. Perkins-to-Fernandez-to-Toro to nab the middle runner at third base before the lead runner could score. 😁

Hendry Mendez has not had a fun day thus far, with the error in right field and then getting doubled off here. Hopefully he can turn it around.

There is zero way Wagoner has two earned runs today. Hopefully, the scorers remedy their scoring error. The 2nd run clearly crossed on Mendez's botched pop-up and he certainly wouldn't have tagged with Mendez 6' from the infield dirt. Unfortunately, the T-Rats can't get anything going from fast moving RHP Alex Williams (Stanford University) who looks quite impressive on the mound in his first ever High-A start.

RHP Max Lazar is now in in relief of Cam Wagoner for his first action of 2023. He's off the Rule-5 protection of the off-season Sounds roster placement and back to High-A hoping for a healthy and productive season.

RHP Tyler Herb is warming up in the Sounds pen after RHP Pedro Fernandez has walked his first two batters here in the bottom of the 4th frame. And, it looks like Sweet will move to Herb here as he'll look to end the threat.

And Lazar finally succumbs to a single up the middle on the 10th pitch of his 3rd batter faced. A long AB. The runner from 2B scored after advancing on a Lazar wild pitch. Max is scuffling through this inning with long AB's. Not a lot of hard contact - the first hit was a weak dribbler to the 3B. He'll look to settle down and work his way through this outing.
