Victories for fans on-site can be exhilarating for those that stay in their seats until the final out, right Nashville? Victories can be frustrating for fans who may not find their seats until the second inning and miss all of the offensive fun, right Zebulon? For the final home team of this report in Biloxi, well, at least fans had the chance to purchase amazing new gear to distract them from action on the field.

Let's get things started with our daily review, including a Wisconsin road game that thankfully the Appleton fans weren't directly subjected to. It was a day of high high's and low low's in the system, to be sure.

Transactions:

  • Milwaukee Brewers traded RHP Thyago Vieira and RHP Aneuris Rodriguez to Baltimore Orioles for RHP Garrett Stallings (Stallings assigned to Nashville).
  • Nashville Sounds activated 2B Patrick Dorrian from the 7-day injured list (Dorrian will look for a fresh start to his 2024, 6-for-68 thus far, coming off a useful .778 OPS with the Sounds last year)

The Brewers dipped into their deep reserve of "Rodriguez" talent, reducing the Rodriguez level from eleven to ten players. As the player page linked above indicates, Aneuris is a Dominican native who will be turning 20 years old in June. Rodriguez signed in March of 2022, and thus was a post-batch addition from the traditional large pool of international signees. He's been effective enough through two Dominican Summer League campaigns, including a good number of starting assignments. His strikeout pitch is working in this spring's stateside debut.

Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes
Final: Nashville 5, Charlotte (White Sox) 3
Box Score and Game Log

Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine:

Roller's Walk-Off Homer Gives Sounds Fifth Straight Win Over Charlotte - Outfielder’s two-run blast in ninth inning gives Nashville 5-3 decision in thriller

Let's start with the ending -

Supplementing the fine game summary you just read, the Nashville "X" feed includes Aaron Ashby and the obligatory (and welcome) Brewer Hicklen highlights.

Progress made here for Ashby, the key will be what comes next, can consistency and further improvement follow?

Abner Uribe's box score line looks fine on the surface, but thanks to our forum contributor wiguy94 we learn it wasn't an ideal outing.

Just keep plugging Tyler Black in at first base day in, day out, grow those defensive repetitions. Can we see Black being moved at the deadline for pitching? Does he have a long-term home with the big-league Crew?

Beach Chicken Debut Spoiled by Barons Biloxi’s bullpen allows one run over six innings, Boeve tallies multi-hit effort

When I started this gig in 2001, little did I think I'd by typing "Beach Chickens" at any point.

The amazing seagull-themed logo was certainly the highlight of Biloxi's night.

The Shuckers scraped out four singles and two walks. One looks at the bottom of the Biloxi order in particular (Yerzy, Sparks, Acosta) and sighs, but Ethan Murray and Zavier Warren weren't tantalizing production as bench options Saturday, either.

For starter TJ Shook, this awesome May 7th outing seems so long ago.

LH middle reliever Russell Smith tossed three hitless/scoreless (three walks, one HBP), and RH closer Justin Yeager, getting work in, allowed three singles in the 9th but pitched his way out of it.

The flip-flops, the umbrella beverage, the color palette, thank you, kind Beach Chicken, for wonderfully distracting us from recent results on the field.

Final: South Bend (Cubs) 6, Wisconsin 1

Box Score and Game Log

South Bend’s Big Second Inning Beats Wisconsin - Cubs top Rattlers 13-1 to clinch series

The 27-17 Timber Rattlers have earned the right to have the occasional super-clunker. This qualifies.

Similar to the Shuckers game, relievers' efforts made the box score review less ugly.

First baseman Tayden Hall's bump to High-A is not off to a flying start - 7-for-47 (one double).  Seven walks vs. nine K's show us that BABIP is in play. It was .463 with Carolina to start the year and it's .179 with the T-Rats.

Shake it off, Tayden (and the T-Rats after this one).

Final: Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 3

Hot Start Lifts Mudcats Past Pelicans

Thank you Mudcats, for offsetting some of the Cub-related pain from South Bend this week as noted above.

If the game log descriptions are to be believed from Zebulon, then that four-run Carolina first inning must have really been something, check it out to see the words "line drive" or "lined out" peppered throughout.

21-year-old RHP Yorman Galindez has made seven starts in 2024, and only one was off-putting (May 11th - 3.1 IP, 4 R, 4 BB's). Galindez now sports a 3.16 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 42 K's in 25.2 innings.

This got me going, I was dragging there for a bit:

18-year-old Juan Baez (yes, Baez will be 19 in June, but did we forget that he's only been 18?) was 4-for-4 with a double. That gave the antsy $10,000 signing plenty of time to experiment on the basepaths as only Baez can. He netted both his 7th successful steal and his 9th not-so-successful attempt.

In 171 plate appearances Baez has walked only 11 times, just 6.4%. But wait, he has only struck out 11 times, and I don't have to calculate that percentage for you! There's no one quite like Baez in the system. He is thoroughly fascinating and entertaining, not to mention eminently productive. Did I mention he's still just 18 years old?

ACL Padres 9, ACL Brewers 5, seven innings as scheduled
Box Score and Game Log

This was an early game in the desert, and it gave my co-worker Daniel a chance to chime in on the video-free, audio-free, gameday developments via our forum, which I'll share verbatim here:

The ACL Brewers and ACL Padres are squaring off for the 2nd straight day, with the Brewers still (apparently) having only one healthy position player on the bench (Alastre yesterday, Lameda today).

CF Antony Gomez has homered for a 2nd straight day. Well done to him.

RHP Felipe de los Santos and his incoming 23.63 ERA got the start. But 3 ER in 1.2 IP actually lowered his season ERA (heaven help us).

21-year-old RHP Dencer Geraldo made his stateside debut and first game action since June 10 last year: 3 ER in 0.1 IP. Gulp.

We’ve hit 6 Padres by HBPs. Oh my.

We’re actually out-hitting them (the singles, doubles, triples, homers type) 5-to-3, but trail 8-to-4. RF Gery Holguin has 3 singles to lift his average to .220. He was also picked off.

Yes, our opponents have 8 runs on 3 hits.

And now 1B Johan Barrios has homered, giving him 3 in 2 days. I’m guessing he was dealing with some sort of injury to start this ACL season, as his playing time was oddly limited.

The ACL games yesterday and today are both 7-inning affairs, by the way.

We trail 8-5 in the top of the 6th inning.

NOTE: It was a 1-2-3 final frame in the 7th for the now 6-10 A-Crew.

It's a traditional four-pack of games Sunday. Those naughty South Bend Cubs have scheduled a 6:00 PM Central game to prevent the Timber Rattlers from getting a head start on their return home for Tuesday action. That does give you the opportunity to check out Chris Mehring's call this evening after the parent club completes the Fenway sweep. All the various game times can be found at the link below, it's late afternoon action in Nashville and Biloxi as well.

Have you had enough of yours truly this week? I hope not, because the overtime is in high gear, and I'll be back for your Monday AM holiday review. Talk to you then and enjoy your Sunday!
