Sat. 8/9 - Just-Turned 19-year-old RHP Miqueas Mercedes Set to Make Mudcat Debut

Handelfry with the base knock. And Bitonti singles up the middle, but Encarnacion tries to go to 3rd and is thrown out. Very aggressive base running. Bitonti takes second but Anderson flies out. No insurance runs today.

on to the top of 7.

I can't watch. Turning it off. 😅 He is prone to this exact type of outing. I knew he'd be trot right back out there too. Ugh. Single, single, four pitch walk.

Bases loaded. No out. Nursing that 2-0 lead. Reyes is not in command.  2 hits, 3 walks in his 1+ innings.  Yikes

pitchers are starting to throw in the bullpen.

And I look back and he’s 2-0, and ball 3.
‘And it’s ball 4. Second straight 4 pitch walk. Run in. Now it’s big time trouble. Ugh. Reyes was goos in June and July but not sharp recently.

I legit don't understand Stanley. He makes fascinating decisions with the pitching staff on the regular. You know Reyes is prone to walking guys. You saw he wasn't sharp. SO, leave him in to walk in two and then give his mess to another late-to-warm-up arm with zero outs? It is just silly.

Tie game. He did throw a strike to end 11 straight balls.

This reminds me of that outing in May against Kannapolis.  Yikes. He cannot find the zone and when he does it gets hit.

AND his answer is give a bases loaded mess to Nova who has only proven to find any success with his control in clean innings. IF this is your plan, just give him the 7th off the bat! So frustrating.😅

Oh man Reyes is going to make this interesting isn't he? Pain.

Felt like actively courting disaster to put Reyes (15 balls, 8 strikes in penultimate inning) back out there. And somewhat needless, given that half the pitching staff is well-rested. Maybe there are injuries we’re not aware of.

Joseph you know this is how all of minor league baseball is managed. This isn't a Nick Stanley thing. These managers are not managing as if winning/losing is the goal. Most reliever work is pre-planned and you only stray from that pre-planning if it totally falls apart.

Absolutely agreed. My contention remains: just give the clean inning to Nova. He has been quite good in Close Out scenarios of late. His stuff is better. It is legit close out material. I know he's likely hoping to Save him but Reyes very obviously didn't have much of anything today and now Nova is in and you risk losing the game. It's a silly sequence of events imho.

Ok. Praying for a Nova miracle. He's been very good lately but this is an unfair ask.

You got it. K and double play. Now let’s walk it off

I know. I know. In their last season in Zebulon? I'm straying. I want playoffs!😅

Amazing. Amazing. That right there? Absolutely indicative of how far Nova has come in a very short period of time.Said it outing 1: has the stuff just needs to harness it.

Well, shiver me timbers, he may be finding something within himself in real time.

Hillcats manager Nick Stanley not warming anybody in the bullpen...that's just Nick Stanley for you!

I see what you're doing here. I believe you are lacking blue font. Not nice! Foul!

Never a doubt.

Reyes wins Player of the Game.

Stanley wins Manager of the Year. Of ALL Time!

(I'm kidding. Relax. I'm over-reacting in a Game Thread)

Up the middle through the drawn in infield.  Walk off win. Nice

And it’s Reyes who gets the win 😂 and Torres not factored in 🙄

Can we talk about the cajones of one RHP Jose Nova?!? Incredible stuff. That 2-2 rising four-seamer atop the zone for the K. Cool as a cuke. Then the sinking tailing first pitch to a lefty - sinking tailing away below the zone inducing the grounder. AND, the savvy collect; tag; and throw to 1B by Adamczewski?! Come on now! THAT is winning baseball.
