June Transactions: Jones DL'd, 2 Newcomers, Candy Man

Either way, it's not going to make a great deal of difference, except to the people of Huntsville(who understandably want a better bat than Alvarado). For Kade's "production," we can always bring back the younger Kremblas. I trust that wouldn't be a tough negotiation.

I'd rather give Barney a catcher's mitt than have Mike K back. Come back B Moon all is forgiven - he hit as well as any of them and his D was worth the ticket price,

From Mark McCarter in Huntsville:

Catcher Kade Johnson cleared waivers and is back on the Stars' active roster. Johnson had been removed from Milwaukee's 40-man major league roster and could have been claimed by other organizations, who would have then had to place him on their 40-man roster. Catcher Nestor Corredor has been removed from the Huntsville roster, but will stay here until the short-season Pioneer League begins play.

I must say I'm pleased that Kade cleared waivers, if only because it would have been another harsh blow to the Huntsville faithful had he been claimed.

Speaking of Huntsville faithful, what did y'all think of Nestor Corredor? You guys were the first ones to see him play in the US... want to share your "scouting report"? He was obviously playing way over his head, probably three levels above where he belongs, but it would still be interesting to get an idea of what he looks like, how he plays, etc.

Thanks,

~Bill

now that Kade is off the 40 man, Im assuming that he is elgible to be taken in the Rule 5 draft next year? correct?

Yep. It's hard to say that "since no one picked him up now, no one will then," but he'll have to start hitting better to be a reasonable backup catcher for somebody. I really don't think anyone would want to take that gamble in the forseeable future.

We don't believe it's an official DL move yet, but man, it's been a tough year injury-wise for Maverick OF Chris Morris. From the Daily Press:

High Desert outfielder Chris Morris, who returned to the Mavs' lineup Thursday after missing seven games with a hernia, re-aggravated the injury against Lancaster and will require surgery. Morris previously missed 19 games this season with a jammed thumb.

To make room for Trent Durrington on the Indianapolis roster, the Brewers have released veteran infielder Scott Sheldon. At 35, Sheldon was the second oldest player in the organization, behind Dave Burba. That distinction now goes to 33-year-old Indy LHP Chris Michalak.

Huntsville RHP Ryan Miller, on the DL, reports to Stars' announcer Robert Portnoy that bone chips in addition to bone spurs have been found in his elbow. The remainder of his season is now in question, nothing official yet.

Baby-faced kid, good-looking, but that has nothing to do with his ability. Blocked the plate pretty well and seems fundamentally sound, but doesn't have the gun for this level. Needs some muscle in that arm. At the plate, I saw him hit a couple of fly balls to center, neither of them too deep. If memory serves me, he played in only two games, both at home. Time will tell whether he's just another Matt Ceriani, who also flew through here on emergency duty, three years ago and wound up hitless when he left, too.

The Brewers love to take a chance on independent league power arms, and have signed another in RHP Jeff Garner, who made his professional debut in the Frontier League with Kalamazoo this spring. This will be Garner's first affiliated contract. He just turned 24 in April.

From the Kalamazoo Gazette:

Jeff Garner was signed to a minor league contract by the Milwaukee Brewers, and he will report to their Arizona League affiliate on Monday. Garner, without a decision in 7 2/3 innings pitched, has given up three hits, struck out five and walked three. He is consistently throwing in the nineties after coming off of Tommy John surgery.

Ah yes, power arms are rarely available if they're not on the road back from injury (see Tim Bausher). Nice to see the Brewers remain among the most active organizations in mining for talent among the independent ranks.

You'd have to think that Garner, at age 24, will be in either Beloit or High Desert soon.

Stars 3B Chris Barnwell has been suspended by the team for two games for undisclosed reasons, according to the Huntsville broadcast today.

Note from the Beloit Daily News:

Left-handed pitcher Greg Kloosterman may come off the disabled list as early today to fill the open roster spot left by demoted pitcher Tommy Hawk, Money said.

You would think that Hawk will be sent to Helena and not Arizona, but nothing official in as of yet.

Beloit Daily News:

LHP Greg Kloosterman has been activated from the disabled list. Before going on the DL with a strained shoulder he was 1-4 with a 9.15 ERA.

Fans of the minor league transaction thread, be sure to keep an eye on this thread in the 2004 Draft Forum -- we're at that slightly awkward time where draft signings and transactions blur -- a couple of non-drafted free agents are discussed here as well (LF and LHP). Thanks.

As noted elsewhere in the forum, LHP Pete Zamora was released from Huntsville to make room for newly-acquired RH reliever Saul Rivera.

The Brewers have confirmed for us that RHP Tommy Hawk has been transferred from the Beloit to the Arizona roster. There will be no official word on any injury-related issues from the organization.

In order to make sure Huntsville has 648 pitchers on their roster (or close to it), RHP Paul Stewart has been transferred to the AA Stars' roster from Indianapolis, according to an Indianapolis press release.

There must be a correpsonding room of some sort, as the Stars' roster now appears to have the same ten position players (badly in need of an 11th all season long, but to no avail), and these 14 pitchers. The active roster limit is 23 for this point of the season in the Southern League.

Active pitching staff, Huntsville:

LHP Brian Adams

LHP Ryan Costello

LHP Matt Ford

LHP Jeff Housman

RHP Mike Jones

RHP John Novinsky

RHP Fernando Rijo

RHP Reggie Rivard

RHP Saul Rivera

RHP Chris Saenz

RHP Dennis Sarfate

RHP Jason Shelley

RHP Paul Stewart

RHP Glenn Woolard

Did we ever figure out how Indy has 24 players?

How many more chances are guys like Erdos going to get to keep stinking it up? You'd think some of these crappy free agent signings would be getting cut soon with guys getting healthy.
