Yaz, if I said what Cheney said HERE I would get reprimanded. How is it appropriate conduct for the Senate floor? I understand his frustration, but he's the vice-president of the United States, and it isn't unfair of us to expect conduct commensurate with that post.

Yep, that was Ben Grieve's fault. It's not like Wes Obermueller served up a hanging curveball that Cristian Guzman hammered for a line drive off the base of the right field wall, or anything. Ben Grieve should have gotten a great read on that and made a leaping catcher on the warning track. What a loser for not catching that. When your pitcher is doing his job and getting hard hit liners to the wall, you've got to do *your* job and rob them of a double.

Many of the screwups I've seen from him could be overcome with simple effort. He lollygags out there, and it drives me crazy. I can't believe we tolerate that kind of crap from a player like Grieve, who's barely worth the time it took to sew his name on the back of his jersey.

Billy Hall's play was much easier than Grieve's, but I can't blame either one of them. When your pitcher is giving up *rockets* batter-after-batter, you can't expect your defense to be saving him from giving up hits.

 

The problem with this inning is not Grieve, it's not Hall, and it's not (insert your favorite Brewer to hate on here). It's one guy: Wes Obermueller.

Come on Bill. That didn't even hit the wall. It bounced off the turf onto the wall. Brady Clark can make a running catch coming in on a liner, yet Grieve can't catch a liner going back when he is already playing deep?

 

He came in on the ball, then realized it was going over his head. He can't play defense.

 

Hate to tell you but Grieve has defensive problems no matter who is on the mound.

No. It stems from the fact that a fire hydrant could play better defense. It's become clear that this team is not going to win because of its offense. If they continue to win, which is a big IF right now, it's going to be because of their pitching and defense.

 

If you're going to lean on your pitching and defense to win games, you can't have people in the field who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground on defense. Ben Grieve is one of those guys. I don't mind him being in the lineup, because he's actually (and shockingly) hit a little this season. But how do you not DH him when you have a chance to?

Well, Pods got a day off, and I can't with good conscience say that Ginter is better in RF than Grieve. We've always known he's a poor fielder, but there's a sizable gap between what he is and what you're making him out to be. He's no Griffey, but he's no Echevarria either from what I've seen. If we could put Clark's glove on him we would, but saying he's without value is not only harsh (which is fine), it's inaccurate (which isn't).

Ginter makes an effort to get better as a fielder. Grieve has gotten worse since he first came up, and he acts like he could care less.

That ball short hopped the wall... that's exactly what I said. It wasn't a flyball, it was a line drive. In order to make that play, Grieve has to get a good read and make a running/leaping catch going back and to his right.

 

But that's "easy", right?

 

Could someone else have caught that ball? Maybe. Clark probably could have gloved it five times out of ten, or maybe a bit less. It certainly wasn't a routine play. To describe it as such is disingenous.

Thanks for letting me know... I had no idea that Grieve wasn't a good defender. All along I thought he was a Gold Glover with a rocket arm.

 

If Grieve can make most of the routine plays, his bat more than justifies his position in the lineup. I don't care how many derogatory remarks folks come up with about how he doesn't know "X" from his "X", Grieve's offensive contributions far outweigh his defensive shortcomings.
