This is a shrewd move. If it's for one year, they'll obviously just trade him at the deadline provided he stays healthy.

 

It it's for multiple years, then I have no idea what they're thinking, because they're not likely to contend as long as they're in the AL East.

I like this take. Basically Melvin's offering a one year deal and a chance to close for a contending team. Rays offer a closer job for a bad team and Yankees offer a setup role but both offer a two year deal. It'll be interesting to see which way he goes. My guess is Tampa Bay wins.

Iirc, Maddon was with the Angels during Percival's tenure.
