Will we ever have a $100 million man?

I have been thinking about this. If the Brewers wanted to sign someone to say a 10 yr $150m deal and then ask a major corporation to sponsor another $100 million for the player, you think it would be possible to sign a major perennial all-star to a 10 yr $250m deal?

I don't think so. Part of running a small-market club is mitigating risk. That would be the opposite of risk mitigation.

I don't know if having a corporation or outside company pay for part of a player's salary is even allowed by MLB rules. I wouldn't really know the answer on this, though. It seems like something that would have been done by now if it was allowed.

I don't really see the upside for the company, either. It's not like they can put their logo on the player's jersey or something. Could you imagine "now batting, Prince Fielder...brought to you by Subway! Eat Fresh!" or something similar? Didn't think so.

There will come a time when 100 million dollar men aren't going to be that uncommon. There's no end in sight to salary increase, so it'll happen. The Brewers payroll continues to increase each year, and we're still near the bottom of the league. That will probably never change. As time goes by, we could see a 150 million dollar payroll in Milwaukee 10-15 years from now, and they'll still be in the bottom 1/3rd of the league. Given that, I don't think it all that difficult to imagine that at some point we'll see a Brewer with a 6 or 7 year deal worth 20 mil plus. As some pointed out, it may even be a guy already on the roster.

With the dollar quickly starting to resemble a future-past tense ruble, it wouldn't surprise me terribly if I get a $100 million contract in my lifetime. It probably won't be to play baseball, but 30 years hence we'll probably be buying food off the $1000 menu at McDonald's.
