Martinez (NR) went a combined 12-5 with a 2.13 ERA in 27 starts for Class AA Huntsville and Class AAA Indianapolis this year, going 4-0 with a 0.99 ERA in five starts for the latter squad. Milwaukee's Keith Ginter and Cincinnati's Wily Mo Pena each hit two-run homers. The Brewers are one game ahead of the last-place Reds in the National League Central. John Bale (1-1, 2.76), who will make his sixth start and seventh appearance for Cincinnati, picked up his first win as a Red on Friday, beating St. Louis, 8-5. 9/02/03 - Reds (Wilson) @ Brewers (Obermueller)

As much as I dislike Clayton's offense, the difference between his and Hall's defense is night and day. I really don't think Hall's ready to be an everyday MLB SS, but I suppose, what do we really have to lose? There was a reason he was moved to 2B. I've enjoyed watching Clayton field his position this year, but it's definately time to get some more offense out of that position. Hopefully in 2005 we'll be able to finally have an SS who can hit AND field. Billy Clayton = JJ Hardy -

With today's win, the Brewers move into sole posession of 5th place. Not quite time to start printing up playoff tickets, but 5th place is something no one expected the Brewers to see until next April. Thanks for not rolling over and dying, fellas. Also the Brewers: - will need to go 21-5 to earn a .500 mark this season. - are 3 games out of 4th place - are 12 games out of 1st place - are 13 games out of the wild card Nice to see mathematical elimination day inching closer towards the correct end of the calendar this season. -

Indyindians.com Game Notes: THIS WEEKEND: The Indians head to Toledo to battle the Mud Hens for the final two games of the season. The Indians are one-half game ahead of Toledo in the IL West standings for third place. One win by the Tribe will give them a third-place finish for the third straight season. If the Tribe is swept and finishes in fourth place, it will be their first fourth-place finish since 1993. The Indians and Hens have split the 14 previous contests this season including the six played at Fifth Third Field. The teams split two games at Victory Field on Aug. 27 and 28. On Aug. 18, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals to close out the year. The Tribe is 9-5 in this stretch, and 20-26 against division foes overall this season. THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe played 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians went 18-16 in that stretch, including a 13-9 mark at Victory Field. SATURDAY: The fourth-largest crowd in Victory Field history, 16,068, turned out to see the Indians beat Columbus 3-2 in 12 innings. Cody McKay drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 12th to force home Pete Zoccolillo with the winning run. Zoccolillo, who was 3-for-6, had doubled to start the inning. Doug Jennings hit a two-out double off the wall in right in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game at 2-2. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Luis Martinez will make his eighth start for the Tribe Sunday. Martinez started his Triple-A career with 28.1 scoreless innings working into his fifth start before giving up a run. He is coming off a seven shutout inning performance against Louisville on Aug. 26 that lowered his ERA to 0.99. Martinez has struck out 46 batters in 45.2 innings while giving up 37 hits and 19 walks. He started the season at Double-A Huntsville where he was 8-5 with a 2.58 ERA in 20 starts. At the time of his promotion to Indy, he led the Southern League with 116 strikeouts and was fifth in wins and ERA. Martinez was the Brewers minor league pitcher of the month in April when he went 3-1 with a 0.31 ERA. Lefthander Nate Teut is slated to start the final game of the season on Monday. The Indians have won Teut's last four starts although Teut has gotten the decision in just one of those starts. Over those four starts, Teut has allowed 11 ER in 22.2 innings (4.37 ERA). Teut's last start came against the Mud Hens on Aug. 27 in a 4-3 win. Teut allowed three runs in six innings. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Pete Zoccolillo has been named the Indians Most Valuable Player. He leads the team with 131 games, 123 hits, 36 doubles, 72 RBI and 51 walks while hitting .280. PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Jason Childers has been named the Indians Player of the Month for August after going 3-0 with four saves and a 0.00 ERA. He had a win or save in seven of the Tribe's 15 victories this month, and has allowed just five hits in 11.2 innings. SHORTHANDED: The Indians have 14 pitchers on the roster and only 10 position players. Several of the position players are banged up. In fact, during Saturday night's game, starting pitcher Pasqual Coco pinch hit for the designated hitter in the sixth inning. Three Tribe pitchers batted in all going 1-for-3. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fifth in the IL with a .311 average. David Manning is fourth with 60 bases on balls. HOT AT THE PLATE: Steve Scarborough has an eight-game hitting streak. He has four multi-hit games on the streak (.429, 12-for-28) , and has raised his average to a season-high .241. FIELDING PROWESS: Steve Scarborough leads IL shortstops with a .965 fielding percentage. In 458 chances, Scarborough has committed just 16 errors. NANCE'S NUMBERS: In 29 appearances since May 23, LHP Shane Nance has allowed one run in 44.0 innings. In that period he has allowed just 23 hits and eight walks while striking out 45. Nance threw 34.2 scoreless innings, the longest streak in the minors this season, from May 16 through Aug. 18. -

Dayton (Reds) 8, Beloit 2 Beloit Game Summary from the Dayton Site: Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (26-42, 61-77) spotted the Beloit Snappers (42-26, 74-61) two early runs, before roaring back to score eight unanswered to beat the Midwest League second half Western Division champs 8-2, in front of an overflow sellout crowd of 8,898 at Fifth Third Field Sunday afternoon. Kyle Lucas (W, 3-9) ran into some third inning trouble allowing two earned runs to the Snappers as the Dragons fell behind 2-0. A Lucas walk to Keith Bohanan with one down and a single by Callix Crabbe put runners on first and third for Adam Heether. Heether?s slow roller up the third line scored Bohanan and moved Crabbe to second for Tony Gwynn Jr. Gwynn Jr. laced a single into right center that scored Crabbe and the Snappers led 2-0. That would be all Lucas would allow on the day as the right hander tossed a season high 7.2 innings of five-hit baseball, striking out seven and walking just one. Matt Mc Williams came in to get the final out in the eighth inning and blanked Beloit in the ninth to close the game out for Dayton. The Dragons bats came alive in the bottom of the third as Dayton took the lead for good, just one half-inning after Beloit grabbed the advantage. Back-to-back one-out walks by starting pitcher Cal Carpenter (L, 3-6) was the beginning of a Dayton rally. With two down and first and second, Ryan Hanigan got the Dragons on the board with a RBI single scoring Jarrod Schmidt. Bohanan made a costly error at shortstop, allowing Travis Wong to reach and load the bases for Matt Boone. Boone picked up two of his three RBI on the afternoon with a single to right that put the Dragons ahead for good at 3-2. The Dragons continued to knock around Carpenter, who had limited control at best, in the fifth. Dayton scored two runs with out the benefit of a base hit on two walks, a hit baseman, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Tiago Campos to take a 5-2 lead. In 4.0 innings of work, Carpenter allowed four hits, with one strike out, but walked five, hit a batter and tossed a wild pitch. Another pair of runs scored in the seventh inning, off Forrest Martin, on Boone?s RBI ground out and a double by Campos. Hanigan and Wong led off the inning with back-to-back singles and came home before the second out of the inning was made to put Dayton in front 7-2. Dayton picked up one more run off Martin in the eighth on Ryan Fry?s RBI single that scored Schmidt, who was drilled by a pitch to lead off the inning for the Dragons. Fry?s 42nd run batted in on the season closed out the scoring at 8-2. The Dragons will wrap up the four game series against the Snappers and the 2003 regular season Monday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM (1:00 PM Central). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 1:30 pm. Time Warner Television will also carry the game live on Channel 25 in Dayton and surrounding areas. RHP Gorky Batista will make the start for Dayton while Beloit will start LHP Eric Henderson. SportsTicker Game Preview: Milwaukee (59-76) at Chicago Cubs (69-65) 2:20 pm EDT ---------------------------------------------------------------- CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers look to continue their recent success at Wrigley Field Sunday afternoon as they conclude a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers won four of seven meetings at Wrigley last season and have won five of the eight games here this season. Milwaukee had a 10-game winning streak snapped with a 4-2 loss in Friday's series opener, but got back on track with a 9-5 victory on Saturday. Richie Sexson knocked in four runs and hit a two-run home run in the first inning off Shawn Estes. Rookie Scott Podsednik added a two-run single and also stole home as Milwaukee won for the 11th time in 12 games. The Cubs lost for the eighth time in 13 games as Estes lasted just two innings. Former Brewer Troy O'Leary hit a three-run home run and Kenny Lofton had four hits, but Chicago stranded 10 runners and fell 1 1/2 games behind Houston and St. Louis in the National League Central Division. Doug Davis (1-0, 1.31 ERA) makes his fourth start for the Brewers. Since joining Milwaukee, he has allowed five runs and 17 hits in 20 2/3 innings. Davis picked up his first win for the Brewers by pitching a four-hitter at Cincinnati on Tuesday. He gave up just an unearned run in the first inning and pitched his third career complete game. The lefthander, who also has pitched for Texas and Toronto this season, is facing the Cubs for the second time this season. With Toronto, he allowed four runs and six hits over six innings and took a 4-2 loss on June 14. Juan Cruz (1-4, 5.6http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif makes his third start and 21st appearance of the season for the Cubs. He is starting for the first time since August 1 vs. Arizona when he allowed just one run and five hits in six innings of a 4-3, 14-inning loss. Cruz is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in five lifetime appearances against Milwaukee. -

SportsTicker Game Preview: Milwaukee (58-76) at Chicago Cubs (69-64) 4:05 pm EDT ---------------------------------------------------------------- CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs hope to possibly regain first place in the National League Central Division on Saturday when they play the middle contest of a three-game set at Wrigley Field. The Cubs climbed within one-half game of the first-place Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals atop the NL Central after beating Milwaukee on Friday, 4-2. Matt Clement tossed a seven-hitter as the Cubs snapped the Brewers' 10-game winning streak. Cubs lefthander Shawn Estes (7-10, 5.71 ERA) needs three strikeouts to reach 1,000 for his career. He was rocked at Arizona last Saturday, surrendering seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Estes is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts vs. the Brewers this season and 4-3 with a 4.63 ERA in 10 career starts against them. Milwaukee righthander Matt Kinney (9-9, 4.67) beat Cincinnati on the road on Tuesday, 10-6, after allowing four runs in seven innings. Kinney has faced the Cubs once before in his career, giving up six runs in 7 2/3 innings in a 6-1 loss at Miller Park on May 14. -
3:05 PM, CST TV: WCGV-24 Radio: WTMJ 620 Your Milwaukee Brewers try to go for #1 in a row today! Matt Kinney was the recipient of an offensive barrage last start that allowed him to get a win on a 7 IP, 4 ER performance. He has a 3.03 ERA this month, but got hit hard in his only other appearance against the Cubs. Shawn Estes comes off two back-to-back lousy starts, where he couldn't get out of the 5th inning. He's got a 5.71 ERA on the year, but had a decent stretch of starts before his recent troubles. [ How long will Yost stick Vizcaino and his 6+ ERA out there? Do we send him to Triple-A next season? ] He actually had a very nice ERA in August... and you can't send him to AAA, as he's out of options. -

Thanks for the memories, Brew Crew. The streak was fun, and gave us a reason to be excited about the 2003 Brewers. -
