Tonight's affair is a rematch of last week's pitching matchup. Ben Sheets comes off his worst outing of the year aginst the Phillies, giving up 8 runs in 5 innings. He has a 7.50 ERA in August. Kevin Millwood meanwhile is having a nice month, with an ERA of 2.63. He was a winner in his last outing vs. the Brewers, only allowing 1 flyball vs. 12 groundballs. No, Ben Sheets does only throw a fastball and a curveball (and a changeup, but not very often). He had that right... Caldwell's certainly on his way to being back in Milwaukee, as he's risen through the ranks in a hurry. I wonder if it would be more effective though for him to help more in the development process, when kids are in the minors, than in Milwaukee trying to teach old dogs new tricks. -

The issue i'd raise with Nance is that he's stunk with every opportunity he's been given in Milwaukee. Certainly it's not to say he can't become a decent MLB pitcher, but he needs to do something to get over the AAAA hump. -

Any Indy fans here know what Ben Ford and Shane Nance throw? Obviously, if they are just two-pitch pitchers, starting really isn't an option. Ben Ford was a starter at one point, I believe... -

Jason Shelley's looking more and more like he might actually stick, and his first starts weren't flukes. Would be a very cool story if he continues his way up into the Milwaukee rotation (and I believe he will). -
Wayne Franklin is clearly on the skids this month with a 9.77 ERA. He's 2-0 in his only two starts against Pittsburgh this year, so maybe he can turn a corner on this start. Josh Fogg couldn't get one out in his last start: 0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 1 BB Brewerfan.net / Statfox matchup info: www.brewerfan.net/matchup.jsp Wayne Franklin Player Profile: www.brewerfan.net/ViewPla...ayerId=368

IndyIndians.com game notes: TONIGHT: The Indians embark on their final "air" trip of the 2003 season with two games at Norfolk and two games at Charlotte. The Indians are coming off a three-game homestand against Charlotte on which they won two of three. The Indians and Tides are meeting for the first time since early July when the teams split a four-game set at Victory Field. The teams also split four games at Harbor Park in early May. The Indians went 2-10 against the Tides last season. Since July 23, 15 of the Tribe's 20 games have come against opponents from the IL's South division. The Indians are 8-7 in these recent match-ups, but are still just 19-22 against South foes for the season. The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 11 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .245 and have scored 29 runs (2.6 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in six of the 11 games. The Indians have played five extra-inning contests in August going 3-2 in those games. Three of the last four games have gone into extra frames with the Tribe winning all three. ROSTER MOVES: RHP David Manning has been added to the roster after being outrighted from Milwaukee on Sunday. The Brewers have purchased the contract of LHP Doug Davis. He will start Saturday at Pittsburgh. THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 7-7 in that stretch, including a 6-5 mark at Victory Field. The final 16 games of the year will be against IL West rivals. SUNDAY: The Indians defeated Charlotte 4-3 in 11 innings. Steve Scarborough, who was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, doubled with two outs in the 11th before Jason Conti singled him home. Scarborough tripled in two runs and scored in the fifth as the Tribe rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game. Four Indians relievers turned in six shutout innings. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 24th start for the Indians. Coco also leads the squad with eight wins, 121.1 innings pitched and 85 strikeouts. This will be Coco's second start against the Tides in 2003. He limited Norfolk to one run over eight innings at Victory Field on July 9, but did not get a decision in a 5-3 loss. Coco won seven consecutive decisions over 12 starts from May 4 - June 28, but is 0-3 in six starts since. In his last two starts, Coco is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA. At the plate, Coco tops the Tribe pitching staff with four base hits. He is hitting .267 and brings a four-game hitting streak into tonight's contest. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth with a .319 average and fourth with a .388 on-base percentage. David Manning is tied for third with 56 bases on balls. Alex Delgado ranks second among IL catchers haven thrown out 57.7% of would-be basestealers. SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS: LHP Luis Martinez and Shane Nance are boasting impressive scoreless innings streaks. Martinez, who was promoted from Double-A on July 24, has made four starts and has yet to allow a run in 26.1 innings. He has fanned 28 while walking 10. Nance, who has had two stints in Milwaukee this season, has not allowed a run since May 16. In 22 appearances since May 23, Nance has worked 31.0 scoreless innings. In that period he has allowed just 13 hits and five walks while striking out 23. HOT AT THE PLATE: Alex Delgado has a season-high nine-game hitting streak. BROTHERLY LOVE: RHPs Jason and Matt Childers are the first set of brothers to wear Indians uniforms at the same time since Aaron and Bret Boone suited up for the Tribe in 1997. The Boones were in the Indianapolis lineup together for just one day - June 19. Bret was optioned to Indy that day. Aaron was recalled by Cincinnati the next day. Jason saved Matt's first Triple-A win on August 7 at Toledo. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that feat has not happened in Major League Baseball since saves became an official statistic in 1969. The Childers brothers have previously been teammates in 1997 (Helena), 1998 (Beloit), 2000 (Mudville) and 2001 (Huntsville). THE MAN'S GOT A GUN: OF Jason Conti leads the league with 16 outfield assists. The last time an IL outfielder recorded 17 assists was in 1999 when Chad Mottola and Anthony Sanders tied for the league lead with 17. The last IL outfielder with 18 assists was Toledo's Jimmy Hurst in 1997. When the Indians were in the American Association, New Orleans' Kevin Koslofski had 19 assists in 1995. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Wednesday at Norfolk - RHP Ben Ford (3-3, 2.82) vs. LHP Mike Bacsik (1-7, 4.73) Thursday at Charlotte - LHP Luis Martinez (3-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Jon Adkins (7-7, 3.91) Friday at Charlotte - TBA vs. RHP Ryan Kohlmeier (7-4, 4.34) -

Wisconsin (Mariners) 11, Beloit 3 A miscue by Fielder leads to big scoring... Timberrattlers.com Game Summary: FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Jon Nelson and TJ Bohn each drove in three runs and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Beloit Snappers 11-3 Saturday night. Matt Hagen hit his twenty-first home run of the season to tie a Timber Rattler record for homers in a season. Kennard Bibbs drew a walk to start the game, stole second, and went to third on a fly ball to right. Prince Fielder drove in Bibbs with a two-out single to center and Beloit had the early lead. Gary Harris drew a walk to start the Rattler half of the first inning, stole second, and went to third when Chas Terni couldn't handle the throw. Bohn drove in Harris with a sacrifice fly. The Rattlers got things going offensively in the bottom of the third, thanks to a misplayed foul pop. Wisconsin loaded the bases with one out for Nelson. Nelson popped the first pitch of his at bat foul to the Snapper bullpen, but Fielder overran the ball and dropped the ball on his attempt to catch it. Nelson lined a two-run single into right on the next pitch for a 3-1 lead. Brent Metheny, Carlos Arroyo, and Rene Rivera followed with RBI singles to make the score 6-1. Hagen hit a solo homer to left in the bottom of the fifth. The home run tied Juan Silvestre's club record for homers in a season. Silvestre set the record in 1999. Beloit scored a run on a ground out in the top of the sixth, but Nelson drove in a run with an infield single in the bottom of the sixth for an 8-2 Rattler lead. Wisconsin tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Garciaparra's RBI infield single made it 9-2. Bohn tripled in two more runs. The Snappers scored the final run of the night on a sacrifice fly by John Vanden Berg in the eighth. Tanner Watson won his second straight start by going 5-2/3 innings and scattering five hits and six walks. Watson also struck out five for his sixth win of the season. Beloit Box Score: Luis Pena follows up Khalid Ballouli; the pitching rotations at all the minor league levels are really in a state of flux right now; doesn't look like Prince Fielder was charged with an error on the misplayed pop-up; let's give credit to Mario Mendez, drawing four walks... Charlotte (White Sox) 4, Indianapolis 2 indyindians.com Game Summary INDIANAPOLIS -- Tim Hummel's two-run single in the top of the ninth inning pushed the Charlotte Knights to a 4-2 win over the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field on Saturday night. The Charlotte win evens the three-game series at one apiece, as 15,018 fans turned out for SpongeBob Night at Victory Field. Charlotte jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning against Tribe starter Doug Davis. Charlotte opened the game with a single and a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Aaron Miles scored the first Knights run on an RBI groundout by Ross Gload, and Hummel scored the second run of the inning one batter later when Joe Borchard lined a single to right field. Davis settled down from there, however, as he allowed only six hits over 7.0 innings before exiting in favor of John Foster to start the eighth inning. The Tribe offense, meanwhile, was held in check by Charlotte starter Ryan Kohlmeier, who allowed six hits and two runs over 6.1 innings in leaving with a no decision. The Indians scored one run off Kohlmeier in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Knox bunted for a base hit with one out, stole second base, and then scored on Steve Scarborough's RBI single to left. Wilton Veras scored in the bottom of the seventh on another RBI base hit by Scarborough to tie the score at 2-2. Still tied at two heading into the top of the ninth, Roberto Giron was brought on to face the bottom third of the Knights order. Giron (0-5) gave up a leadoff single to Ryan Hankins to open the frame, then walked Jorge Nunez and Miles to load the bases with one out for Hummel, who laced a single to center field bringing home the winning runs. Gary Majewski (5-3) picked up the win for Charlotte with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work. The Indians (52-68) and Knights (61-60) will conclude the three-game series on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. when lefthander Nate Teut (2-5, 4.43) takes the mound against Charlotte's 6'11" righthander Jon Rauch (5-1, 4.73). [ How can the roster be devoid of talent if Melvin has done an outstanding job since he was hired? ] It's possible to do an outstanding job with what you were given, yet fall short. -

[ "Every once in a while" apparently is enough for sunny ol' Neddy. ] So what should Yost be saying/doing? "Yeah, we suck... It's like when you step out in front of oncoming traffic and get hit by a bus.... but instead of dying, you do it for 162 days in any given year." Perhaps if the roster wasn't almost completely devoid of talent, he could us a more positive metaphor.
