  1. Definitely worth reading that whole article... some good tidbits in there from Hall.
  2. Oh my goodness, what a smash. Love these recent Gamel, Green, & Gindl tape-measure highlights. Killer G's! The G-Men? I think some Brewers fans are honestly going to be surprised with just how much power these guys can provide once they do reach the bigs.
  3. For all the bashing Jeter has been hit with regarding his defense in recent years -- and I've certainly participated -- he really has had one of the best careers ever by a shortstop. In terms of defense, I don't know that I've seen a shortstop with a better combination of hands, arm strength, & arm accuracy (not saying others weren't as good, just that no one I can recall was appreciably better). He comes off as a bit of a prick, but I certainly will tip my cap to him when he reaches 3,000. From 1998 to 2007, the only better shortstop in baseball was A-Rod, even though for the last four years of that span he was playing next to Jeter at third base. Those are two amazing careers to sit back & read through.
  4. That one's going to have to be all EDR. I never got to Seattle, sadly. EDR-seeking PM dispatched!
  5. I'm looking forward to the recaps of the DSL Brewers' doubleheader. Crazy to think that we follow 16 & 17-yo kids in the Dominican Republic.
  6. Wow, really cool about Ray. Nice promotion by the Mariners.
  7. Biggio got big-time coverage iirc.
  8. HBO strikes again. They're the Pixar of TV.
  9. I can think of a lot of names, but none that will make it through the filters... Li'l Satan?
  10. Orlando "El Pirata" Arrrr-cia went 0-4. - We need to do better than this. Its like a bad joke in a bad B-movie... Granted, with a first name like Orlando, "Pirates of the Caribbean" fits there also. Maybe we should call him Edward Scissorhands! (ok, I'll admit to feeling stranger than usual this morning). Or more seriously, Orlando "Captain Jack" Arcia. You have no idea how proud I am of this compliment. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. Final: @ DSL Mariners 13, DSL Brewers 8 DSL Brewers Box Score Leadoff man & awesome-name-haver Yonki Hernandez went 4-5. Francisco Castillo was 1-4 with three RBI & two stolen bases. Orlando "El Pirata" Arrrr-cia went 0-4. Jose Pena went 2-3 with a double, home run, RBI, & two walks. Deivi Mejia was 1-5; Juan De Leon was 2-4 with two singles & one walk. Leftfielder Elvis Rubio had a rough night, 0-3 with two fielding errors (as an outfielder... ouch) ... but he was credited with an outfield assist at home plate in the 5th inning. Carlos Pena was 1-4 with a walk & two runs scored; DH Jorge De La Cruz finished 2-4 with a double & RBI. Starter Joel Dicent's final line: 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K. Relievers Yheris Mateo & Juan Santiago flopped in their appearances. Angel Ventura came on & worked a scoreless bottom of the 8th. DSL Brewers Play-by-Play After falling behind 4-1 after the first inning, the DSL Brewers rallied back & took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 5th. The DSL Mariners tied the game in that frame, & the DSL Brewers pushed across one more to take the lead back at 6-5 in the top of the 6th. But the DSL Mariners' bats put everything to rest with seven runs in their half of the 6th, emerging with a 12-6 lead & enough damage done to take the win. Here's the decisive frame... one to forget for the battery of Mateo & Pena: DSL Mariners Bottom of the 6th Pitcher Change: Yheris Mateo replaces Joel Dicent. Miguel Sanchez walks. Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Diego Mina replaces Miguel Sanchez. Ismael Alcantara singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jose Pena. Diego Mina to 3rd. Ketel Marte walks. 12. Final: @Lakeland 13, Brevard County 6 Brevard County Box Score Nick Bucci got rocked tonight, to the tune of 10 earned runs over 3.1 innings. Relievers Corey Frerichs & Rolando Pascual were better, but didn't have impressive final lines. Scooter Gennett went 2-5 out of the leadoff spot, with a run scored & two RBI... but he also added three fielding errors. Kentrail Davis & Hunter Morris both went 1-4 with one single. Khris Davis was 0-4 with two strikeouts... but one RBI. Big Brock Kjeldgaard (the 'Tees' DH tonight) continued to rip up the FSL, going 3-4 with a triple. Shea Vucinich went 1-3 with a walk; Sean McCraw was 2-4, and Josh Prince went 1-4 with a double. Brevard County Play-by-Play The score was 7-6 after the Flying Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. They tacked on three in the 4th, one in the 5th, & two more in the 8th to make certain of the victory. You can click the p-b-p link if you want, but it's not pretty after the top of the 3rd. To think -- a 6-1 lead after two and a half innings wasn't even close to enough in the FSL. *shrug* Go get 'em tomorrow, 'Tees.
  13. Final: @Huntsville 2, Jackson 0 Huntsville Box Score Cody Scarpetta overpowered the Generals' bats tonight, going seven shutout innings to lead the way to the win. He threw 102 total pitches, 65 strikes & 37 balls; his final line was 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K. Robert Hinton replaced him to start the 8th, & allowed two hits, two walks, but zero runs in his 1.1 IP of work. Lucas Luetge & Jim Henderson combined to record the final two outs & secure the victory; Henderson was awarded the save. Logan Schafer extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 1-4 with a single. Steffan Wilson & Sergio Miranda each added singles. Martin Maldonado was 1-2 with a double and a walk. Angel Gonzalez went 2-3 with two doubles & two runs scored. Erik Komatsu was again absent from the box score. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif No word on what may be wrong. Carlos Triunfel grounds out, shortstop Angel Gonzalez to first baseman Sean Halton. Huntsville Gameday
  14. Final: @Nashville 7, Round Rock 6 Gamel Powers Sounds To 7-6 Win In Series Opener Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mat Gamel went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs to power the Nashville Sounds to a 7-6 victory over the Round Rock Express on Monday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. With the win, Nashville (28-35) snapped a three-game losing streak and notched its 11th victory in the last 16 games played at home in Music City. Gamel's two-homer night continued the infielder's red-hot week at the dish. In his last five games, he is hitting .385 (10-for-26) with four home runs and 11 RBIs. It was Gamel's third two-home game this season and the Sounds' eighth overall. He now leads the club with 13 roundtrippers. Round Rock took an early lead against Sounds starter Josh Butler, belting a pair of first-inning longballs to jump ahead 2-0. With one out, shortstop Omar Quintanilla turned the right-hander's 1-0 offering into his third home run of the season, a solo shot off the clubhouse building in right-center. Two batters later, Express first baseman Chad Tracy hammered a solo homer deep to left to double the visitors' advantage. Sounds leadoff man Brandon Boggs halved the Express lead when he opened the Nashville first with his third roundtripper of the year, a solo blast to right-center off Round Rock starter Brett Tomko. It was Nashville's first game-opening home run since Adam Stern accomplished the feat on August 30, 2010. Gamel evened the contest at 2-2 when he led off the Sounds' second with his team-leading 12th home run of the season, a massive solo blast to right-center that bounded onto Chestnut Street. Nashville broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the third against Tomko. Eric Farris started things off with a leadoff double before scoring on Gamel's second homer of the night, a one-out, two-run shot to right that put Nashville on top, 4-2. The rally continued as the next three Sounds reached to load the bases: Mike Rivera doubled, Caleb Gindl singled to extend Nashville's longest hit streak of the year to 13 games, and Edwin Maysonet was hit by a pitch. Red-hot Taylor Green (2-for-3) unloaded the bags with one swing of the bat when he laced a three-run double to right-center that one-hopped the wall to make it a 7-2 contest. With the two-bagger, Green has now recorded an extra-base hit in eight consecutive games and extended his season-best hitting streak to 11 games. Tomko (1-3) took the loss for Round Rock after giving up seven runs on nine hits, including three homers, in his three innings of work. Round Rock got three runs back in the fifth against Josh Butler, pulling within 7-5. Joey Butler drew an inning-opening walk then scored when Doug Deeds followed with an RBI double to right. After a Kevin Cash groundout, Julio Borbon drove in Deeds with a single to left. Later in the frame, former Sound Brad Nelson drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk from Butler to force home Borbon with the inning's third run. Josh Butler (4-4) earned the win for Nashville after working five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits while walking four batters and striking out one. Left-hander Daniel Meadows made his career Triple-A debut for Nashville and saw his first pitch as a Sound belted over the right field wall as Joey Butler led off the Round Rock sixth inning with a solo homer. The blast, the outfielder's third of the year, made it a one-run contest at 7-6 and extended Joey Butler's hitting streak to 14 games, the longest by an Express player all season. Right-hander Sean Green worked the final two frames in hitless fashion for the Sounds, striking out four of his six batters faced, to earn his third save of the year. The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. contest on Tuesday night. Right-hander Mark DiFelice (2-1, 1.82) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face right-hander Tommy Hunter (1-1, 3.38), who is with the Express on a rehabilitation assignment. Nashville Box Score Gindl finished 1-3; Boggs was 1-3 with a walk; Green added a walk to go with his two hits. Farris's double was his lone hit in 5 ABs. Butler was unimpressive yet again, but Sean Green had a nice night. Daniel Meadows's AAA debut was mostly forgettable, but he struck out two batters & walked none in his two innings of work. Nashville Play-by-Play The decisive Nashville 3rd inning put them up 7-2: Nashville Bottom of the 3rd Eric Farris doubles (10) on a line drive to center fielder Julio Borbon. Erick Almonte strikes out swinging. Mat Gamel homers (13) on a line drive to right field. Eric Farris scores. Mike Rivera doubles (5) on a ground ball to left fielder Doug Deeds. Caleb Gindl singles on a line drive to center fielder Julio Borbon. Mike Rivera to 3rd. Edwin Maysonet hit by pitch. Caleb Gindl to 2nd. Taylor Green doubles (15) on a line drive to right fielder Joey Butler. Mike Rivera scores. Caleb Gindl scores. Edwin Maysonet scores. Brandon Boggs walks. With Jordan Brown batting, wild pitch by Brett Tomko, Taylor Green to 3rd. Brandon Boggs to 2nd. Jordan Brown grounds out to first baseman Chad Tracy. Eric Farris grounds out, shortstop Omar Quintanilla to first baseman Chad Tracy. Nashville Gameday
  15. "Your role is to warmup when I tell you and come in the game and pitch when I tell you." -- Earl Weaver That's about as defined as I want bullpen roles to be. Want to have an idea of when to be ready? Be ready at all times. It's really not that hard; relievers pitched successfully for many many years with that notion of "role".
  16. I think it's just a reality of a GM's job that he has to build a roster strong enough to overcome the manager's inevitable deficiencies. Too bad with RRR there just are so, so many.
  17. Betancourt has been about as bad as the worst expectations. I don't think anyone can honestly say, at this point, that the concern over him prior to the season was just sensationalism.
  18. They showed RRR and Yuni having a discussion after Yuni's first crappy at bat. You couldn't see RRR's lips, but it seemed to be A slightly more intense conversation than usual Yeah, I noticed that too. The other thing that stood out was Yuni's body language certainly looked like how a grown man acts when he's being scolded. Reading this thread I would think this team is floundering 5 games below .500. Good teams can win in spite of subpar management. Take the late '90s Yankees.
  19. I understand the general point, homer, but Taylor Green is still a good baseball player, regardless of what level precedes his stat line. He's a disciplined LH bat with some pop. Whatever McGehee finishes with this season, in terms of a slash line, I don't hesitate saying Taylor Green could match. McGehee has sucked for too long to get his numbers up to any respectable level by season's end. He's been Betancourt & Gomez bad, & hasn't shown any signs (imo) of coming out of it. He's skating along purely on rep at this point, & doesn't deserve the starting job on offense or defense.
  20. "I would like to be (in the Majors), but in the same breath I need to play. Sitting on the bench isn't going to do me any good as far as development goes. Now I'm getting older, but especially learning a new position I need to be playing as much as I can." Definitely doesn't seem to have any problem with the Brewers moving him to 1B. Or at the very least knows to talk like he doesn't.
  21. Green would provide an upgrade over McGehee at the plate & in the field. Not only is this not going to happen, though, but Casey is going to continue to bat 5th.
  22. Final: Jackson 3, @Huntsville 1 Jackson Game Story: "Generals Stop Three-Game Skid" By Chris Harris HUNTSVILLE, ALA. (June 12, 2011 - The Generals snapped their three game losing streak Sunday with a 3-1 victory over the Huntsville Stars at Joe W. Davis Stadium. With the Jackson win win and Tennessee Smokies loss, the Generals find themselves three games back in the division, with six to play in the first half. Joe Dunigan and Carlos Triunfel paced Jackson's 10-hit attack with two hits each. Triunfel reached base three times. Brandon Bantz was 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. No Stars batters recorded a multi-hit game. Tom Wilhelmsen (2-1) earned his first win as a starter this season, in his longest outing. Tom allowed one run on four hits in five innings. Taylor Stanton secured his second save of the year, working a perfect final 1.1 innings of the game. Huntsville starter Michael Bowman (2-4) was saddled with the loss. Huntsville had three singles in the bottom of the second inning, and a run scored on one by Martin Maldonado. Huntsville jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning. After three scoreless innings, the Generals rallied and scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kuo Hui Lo doubled to start the inning, then with one out Nate Tenbrink singled in Lo and the Generals tied the game at 1-1. Rich Poythress followed reaching on an error and Carlos Triunfel singled. Brandon Bantz doubled home Tenbrink and Poythress, giving Jackson a 3-1 lead. The two teams played a scoreless final three frames and the lead held. The Generals finish up there 10-game road trip against the Stars Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium, with first pitch set for 6:43 PM. All-Star LHP Anthony Vasquez (4-4, 3.86) takes the mound for Jackson against RHP Cody Scarpetta (2-3, 4.63). The Generals are 6-3 against the Stars this season. The game can be heard on Jackson's NewsTalk 101.5 FM and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com. Huntsville Box Score That's one of the worst game stories I've ever encountered. I added any paragraph breaks... just ugly to read. Anyway, Logan Schafer, Steffan Wilson, Angel Gonzalez, Hainley Statia, & Maldonado tallied all the Stars' hits, with one single apiece. Maldonado added the lone walk for Huntsville. Bowman's final line: 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. Jesus Sanchez worked two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief; Lucas Luetge recorded the final out against the Generals without allowing a baserunner. Sanchez must've hit a pitch count limit to have been lifted when he was. You may recognize the Generals' starter, former Brewers 7th round pick Tom Wilhelmsen. Huntsville Play-by-Play It was a night of offensive disappointment for the Stars, and their other best shot at scoring came in the 3rd inning: Huntsville Bottom of the 3rd Hainley Statia grounds out, second baseman Kyle Seager to first baseman Rich Poythress. Logan Schafer singles on a fly ball to left fielder Jake Shaffer. Lee Haydel reaches on force attempt, fielding error by first baseman Rich Poythress. Logan Schafer to 2nd. Sean Halton flies out to center fielder Brandon Haveman. With Brandon Jones batting, wild pitch by Tom Wilhelmsen, Logan Schafer to 3rd. Lee Haydel to 2nd. Brandon Jones strikes out swinging. Huntsville Gameday
  23. Final: @Albuquerque 16, Nashville 14 Sounds Conclude Road Trip With Heartbreaking 16-14 Loss Nashville Blows Late Five-Run Lead In Albuquerque Nashville Sounds ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds endured a heartbreaking end to their road trip on Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park, blowing a late five-run lead in a 16-14 loss to Albuquerque in the finale of a four-game series. With the defeat, Nashville (27-35) dropped its third straight game to the Isotopes and wrapped up the road trip with a 4-4 record. Trailing 14-9 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Albuquerque rallied to tie the contest with a five-spot in that frame against the Sounds' bullpen then took the lead with two runs against Donovan Hand in the eighth to claim the come-from-behind victory. Albuquerque batters legged out 22 hits on the afternoon, the most ever recorded in a game against the Sounds in the club's 34-year history. The previous high was 21 hits by New Orleans in 2006 in the Zephyrs' 24-inning win over Nashville. The 43 combined hits between the clubs in the game matched the Isotopes Park record. Second baseman Taylor Green (2-for-3) paced the all-hands-on-deck Sounds' offensive attack with two home runs and four RBIs on the day. It marked the infielder's seventh straight game with an extra-base hit. Every Nashville starting position player recorded a knock, including multiple-hit efforts from seven players. Former Isotope Brett Carroll turned in a 4-for-6 effort, his team-leading third 4-hit game of the season. Outfielder Trayvon Robinson finished 5-for-6 on the day in extending his hitting streak to 14 games for the Isotopes. The Sounds got the scoring started by jumping out to a 1-0 lead against Albuquerque starter John Ely in the top of the second. Shortstop Edwin Maysonet opened the frame with a double to deep left-center and later scored on Zelous Wheeler's two-out RBI single to center. Albuquerque responded in the home half of the frame, plating four runs against Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz to grab a 4-1 lead. De La Cruz turned in a short start against his former club for the second time in two starts this season. The right-hander gave up four runs on five hits while walking three batters and striking out two in just two innings of work, throwing 65 pitches (38 for strikes). De La Cruz worked only 1 2/3 frames against the Isotopes in an April 30th start at Greer Stadium. The Sounds got a run back in the third when Carroll singled with one out and later scored on a two-out single off the bat of George Kottaras, who has hit safely in 19 of his last 22 games at a .410 clip (34-for-83). Nashville could have had at least one more run in the frame but an outstanding running catch on the warning track by Robinson, the Albuquerque left fielder, took extra bases away from Maysonet for the final out of the inning. Russ Mitchell, who enjoyed a 4-for-5, five-RBI game for Albuquerque that included four runs scored, touched Sounds reliever Chase Wright for a mammoth one-out solo homer to right-center in the home half of the third. The slugger's fifth longball of the year made it a 5-2 contest. The Isotopes then pieced together three straight singles off Wright, the last of which by Justin Sellers plated Robinson from second to add a second run in the inning. Nashville reclaimed the lead at 9-6 in the fourth by putting up a seven-spot against Ely, sending 11 batters to the plate during the Sounds' best single-inning output of the year. Green and Caleb Gindl led off the inning with the club's third set of back-to-back home runs this season to bring the visitors back within two at 6-4. The blasts were Green's ninth and Gindl's seventh roundtrippers of the year, and extended each player's longest hitting streak of the year: Green to 10 games, Gindl to 12 games. After the Sounds loaded the bases with one out, Mat Gamel quickly unloaded them by rifling a line-drive double just past the first base bag for a three-run double into the right field corner to put Nashville on top, 7-6. Kottaras drove in Gamel with an RBI single and later scored the inning's final run on a Green sacrifice fly. Albuquerque responded immediately with three runs in the bottom of the frame to even things up at 9-9. The first two batters reached against Wright before Mitchell delivered an RBI single to left and Robinson scalded a two-run double to center to tie the game and chase Wright from the contest. The Sounds moved back in front, 14-9, with five runs against a pair of Albuquerque relievers in the top of the seventh. A pair of massive home runs off the bats of Erick Almonte and Green highlighted the outburst. Pinch-hitting for the pitcher's spot, Almonte broke a nine-all tie when he led off the inning with a solo homer to deep left off Isotopes reliever Adam Dedeaux, his second longball of the year. Jordan Brown followed with double to right then scored on a Brett Carroll single. Later in the frame, Maysonet dropped down a two-out RBI bunt single up the third-base line to give the visitors a 12-9 lead. Green followed the Sounds' shortest hit of the day with the club's longest - a towering drive to right off right-hander Mario Alvarez that landed on the second tier of the seating berm, the infielder's second home run of the game and his tenth of the year. For the fourth time on the afternoon, Albuquerque responded to a Sounds' scoring outburst in the top of the frame with one of its own in the home half, getting all five runs back with a two-out rally against Justin James to pull back even at 14-14. After the 'Topes loaded the bags on a double and a pair of walks, Albuquerque reeled off three straight two-out run scoring singles to pull back within one and chase James from the contest. New Sounds reliever Donovan Hand came on to face veteran pinch-hitter John Lindsey with runners on the corners and lost the battle, surrendering a game-tying, opposite-field single to left. Merkin Valdez retired the Sounds in order in the top of the eighth, then Albuquerque broke the tie in the home half of the inning with a pair of runs off Hand courtesy of a Jerry Sands RBI double and a Mitchell run-scoring single. The Sounds didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, putting runners on first and second to open the inning against Valdez. After a Kottaras strikeout, Maysonet was robbed of a run-scoring extra-base hit for the second time by an Isotopes outfielder, as a hard-running Sands tracked down his long fly ball deep in the gap in right-center for the second out. Carroll advanced to third on the play, but Valdez left him standing there as he struck out pinch-hitter Brandon Boggs looking at a 3-2 curveball to end the game. Valdez (4-1) was the beneficiary of the late Isotopes rally and picked up the win after blanking the Sounds in his two frames of action. Hand (1-3) suffered a blown save and took the loss for Nashville after allowing two runs on four hits in his 1 1/3 innings of work. The Sounds travel home to Music City tomorrow to open a four-game series at Greer Stadium against the Round Rock Express (AAA-Rangers). Nashville right-hander Josh Butler (3-4, 4.57) will start Monday's 7:05 p.m. series opener and face Round Rock right-hander Derek Hankins (5-4, 6.71). Nashville Box Score Excellent game story from the Sounds crew tonight; really detailed & well-written. That, paired with me being really tired, means I'll keep this brief. Every starting position player aside from Gindl tonight had a multi-hit game. Green added the only walk for the Sounds to go along with his two longballs. Maysonet & Carroll added stolen bases, and Jordan Brown had an outfield assist, throwing out the Isotopes' first hitter trying to stretch a single into a double. Relievers Zach Segovia & Danny Herrera were the only two pitchers whose lines weren't shield-your-eyes ugly. Oh, and the Sounds have basically now made a liar out of me for my claim that they'd only score 12 runs in two or three more games the rest of the season. Shut up, TLB. Nashville Play-by-Play Time for some pain. After the Sounds took a 14-9 lead with five runs in the 7th, here's how the Isotopes came *charging* back http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif, with 5 runs of their own in the bottom half: Albuquerque Bottom of the 7th Pitcher Change: Justin James replaces Daniel Ray Herrera, batting 6th, replacing second baseman Taylor Green. Defensive Substitution: Eric Farris replaces Erick Almonte, batting 9th, playing second base. Ivan De Jesus grounds out, shortstop Edwin Maysonet to first baseman Mat Gamel. Eugenio Velez doubles (11) on a fly ball to center fielder Caleb Gindl. A. J. Ellis flies out to right fielder Brett Carroll. Jerry Sands walks. JD Closser walks. Eugenio Velez to 3rd. Jerry Sands to 2nd. Russell Mitchell singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jordan Brown. Eugenio Velez scores. Jerry Sands scores. JD Closser to 3rd. Trayvon Robinson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Caleb Gindl. JD Closser scores. Russell Mitchell to 3rd. Jamie Hoffmann singles on a ground ball to right fielder Brett Carroll. Russell Mitchell scores. Trayvon Robinson to 3rd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter John Lindsey replaces Mario Alvarez. Pitcher Change: Donovan Hand replaces Justin James, batting 6th. John Lindsey singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jordan Brown. Trayvon Robinson scores. Jamie Hoffmann to 2nd. Ivan De Jesus lines out to shortstop Edwin Maysonet. Nashville Gameday
  24. Or the big league DH later this week. Green makes a good argument with an OPS over 1.500 this month. Nope. If we didn't have Roenicke as manager, it could be someone not named Mark Kotsay. Too bad.
  25. Dang, Gindl hit that around 450'!
