  1. Final: AZL Angels 11, @ AZL Brewers 7 AZL Box Score With a first pitch temperature of 99 degrees, a big offensive night probably seemed inevitable. The Angels scored in just two innings, but a seven-run inning plus a four-run inning will win you a lot of ballgames. The Brewers had jumped all over starter Frank DeJiulio, to the tune of seven runs after two innings, ending his night quite prematurely. But a trio of relievers was able to silence the Brewers' bats the rest of the way to secure the win, dropping the AZL squad to 3-13 on the season. Mitch Stetter made his second AZL rehab appearance, working a scoreless first inning. He finished with no hits & no walks allowed, one hit batter, & two Ks. Francisco Rivero came in after Stetter, working two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts & one hit batter. 2011 39th-rounder LHP Elliot Glynn worked 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Manuel Ruiz was the victim during the Angels' seven-run 4th inning; Jose Oviedo & Connor Whalen worked the four-run 9th. Hitaniel Arias (two-run shot) & Jalen Harris (three-run) each homered. Arias added a single & a walk; Harris also walked once. Brandon Macias had a double, stolen base, & two walks, but also two throwing errors at shortstop. Second baseman Andres Martinez had a double, a single, & stole a base. Cameron Garfield singled & walked; Matthew Franco doubled, & Jose Garcia singled. AZL Play-by-Play The first two offensive innings for the AZL Crew: AZL Brewers Bottom of the 1st Renaldo Jenkins grounds out, third baseman Brian Hernandez to first baseman Freddy Sandoval. Andres Martinez strikes out swinging. Cameron Garfield singles on a line drive to center fielder Andrew Workman. Hitaniel Arias singles on a ground ball to left fielder Zachary Borenstein. Cameron Garfield to 2nd. With Brandon Macias batting, wild pitch by Frank DeJiulio, Cameron Garfield to 3rd. Hitaniel Arias to 2nd. Brandon Macias walks. With Jalen Harris batting, wild pitch by Frank DeJiulio, Cameron Garfield scores. Hitaniel Arias to 3rd. Brandon Macias to 2nd. Jalen Harris homers (1) on a fly ball to center field. Hitaniel Arias scores. Brandon Macias scores. Matthew Franco doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Zachary Borenstein. Ronny Puello called out on strikes. AZL Brewers Bottom of the 2nd Jose R. Garcia singles on a ground ball to third baseman Brian Hernandez. Renaldo Jenkins triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Andrew Workman. Jose R. Garcia scores. Andres Martinez grounds out, third baseman Brian Hernandez to first baseman Freddy Sandoval. Cameron Garfield called out on strikes. Hitaniel Arias homers (2) on a fly ball to left field. Renaldo Jenkins scores. Brandon Macias doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Zachary Borenstein. With Jalen Harris batting, Brandon Macias steals (3) 3rd base. Jalen Harris walks. Matthew Franco grounds out to first baseman Freddy Sandoval. And then pretend the rest of the game didn't happen. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  2. Could that be what the random high-fives in the dugout a few nights back were for?
  3. Fwiw, the only crap Jeter takes from 'the SABR community' is that he's won a bunch of gold gloves & at his best was really only an average or so defender. He's been a fantastic hitter at SS for a long time now, & this is an incredible accomplishment. To think of all the stud players that've worn the pinstripes over the years, & Jeter's the first to 3,000 hits. Excellent story & excellent player.
  4. His point was how people are assessing players, not who makes or breaks the deal. I hadn't noticed if the same people who were upset that people thought Yuni would suck as badly as he has are also convinced Greinke isn't good or not, though.
  5. I'm very happy for the Pirates. They've been run in the right direction for a few seasons now, and combining that with some excellent young talent, they will probably be the real deal in another season or so.
  6. Final: @AZL Cubs 5, AZL Brewers 2 AZL Box Score The Brewers were able to tie the game with a two-run 5th inning, but allowed three runs in the bottom of the 7th & went on to lose. 2011 UDFA Will West allowed two runs over four innings in his start. West didn't walk a batter, but also didn't strike one out. Greg Davis, another '11 UDFA, worked two scoreless innings of relief. Mike Francisco ('11 48th-rd.) went 1.2 IP without allowing a hit; he struck out three batters. Jeffrey Saba (first name is actually spelled "Yefri", but pronounced "Jeffrey") had a terrible outing. He allowed a double, two triples, & three runs; he only recorded one out. The lone run-scoring play for the Brewers was a two-run blast in the fifth from 9-hitter Andres Martinez ('08 UDFA via Dominican Republic). Hitaniel Arias & Renaldo Jenkins ('11 19th-rd.) had the only other hits in the game, both singles. Catcher Jimmie Pharr & rightfielder Ronny Puello ('09 UDFA via D.R.) each had one walk. Brandon Macias, Steve Felix, & Jalen Harris all went 0-4. AZL Play-by-Play The scoring offense in its entirety: AZL Brewers Top of the 5th Jimmie Pharr strikes out swinging. Ronny Puello walks. Jose R. Garcia flies out to center fielder Taiwan Easterling. With Andres Martinez batting, wild pitch by Jean Sandoval, Ronny Puello to 2nd. Andres Martinez homers (2) on a fly ball to left field. Ronny Puello scores. Renaldo Jenkins strikes out swinging. The ugly inning that was the undoing: AZL Cubs Bottom of the 7th Pitcher Change: Jeffrey Saba replaces Greg Davis. Oliver Zapata hits a ground-rule double (3) on a fly ball to right field. Johan De Jesus strikes out swinging. With Gregori Gonzalez batting, throwing error by Jimmie Pharr on the pickoff attempt, Oliver Zapata to 3rd. Gregori Gonzalez strikes out swinging. Passed ball by catcher Jimmie Pharr. Oliver Zapata scores. Gregori Gonzalez to 1st. With Taiwan Easterling batting, Gregori Gonzalez steals (3) 2nd base. Taiwan Easterling triples (2) on a line drive to right fielder Ronny Puello. Gregori Gonzalez scores. Gioskar Amaya triples (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Jose R. Garcia. Taiwan Easterling scores. Dustin Geiger walks. Pitcher Change: Michael Francisco replaces Jeffrey Saba. Ryan Durrence strikes out swinging. With Eduardo Gonzalez batting, Gioskar Amaya caught stealing home, pitcher Michael Francisco to first baseman Hitaniel Arias to catcher Jimmie Pharr.
  7. Final: @Missoula 6, Helena 5 Helena Box Score The Osprey had just enough in the tank to outlast the Brewers tonight. After the 4th inning, Missoula was up 5-3. Helena plated one run in the tops of the 6th & 7th innings to tie the score, only to give up a run in the bottom of the 7th to fall back behind. Matt Sample pitched a perfect 9th inning, striking out two Brewers, to record the save & nail down the win for Missoula. 2011 15th-rounder Andrew Moye had a rough start, allowing at least one run in each of his four innings. '11 7th-rounder David Goforth worked three innings in relief, allowing three hits, one run, & striking out three. Alex Jones worked the 8th, & allowed one hit while striking out one batter. Catcher Tyler Roberts was the offensive star, going 4-4 with a solo home run. Max Walla & Yadiel Rivera each went 1-5 with a double. John Dishon had a good night: 2-2 with two singles, two walks; he was also credited with a theft of second base, and one of home plate. Mike Nemeth added an RBI single & a walk. Adrian Williams & Nick Ramirez singled once. Parker Berberet & Robby Garvey went hitless but each drew a walk. Helena Play-by-Play If I had to guess from the game log, I'd say Dishon's steal of home probably came after the Missoula catcher tried to throw out Adrian Williams stealing second. But if that were true, wouldn't you list the theft of second base before that of home plate? Helena definitely could've scored more than twice this inning, after three consecutive walks to start the inning: Helena Top of the 3rd Michael Nemeth walks. John Dishon walks. Michael Nemeth to 2nd. Robert Garvey walks. Michael Nemeth to 3rd. John Dishon to 2nd. Adrian Williams grounds into a force out, second baseman Fidel Pena to shortstop Josh Parr. Michael Nemeth scores. John Dishon to 3rd. Robert Garvey out at 2nd. Adrian Williams to 1st. With Nick Ramirez batting, John Dishon steals (2) home. Adrian Williams steals (6) 2nd base. Nick Ramirez grounds out, second baseman Fidel Pena to first baseman Jonathan Griffin. Adrian Williams to 3rd. Parker Berberet strikes out swinging. Even though they tied the game in the 6th, the Brewers had another shot at a crooked number & couldn't cash in: Helena Top of the 6th Max Walla doubles (4) on a line drive to right fielder Chris Ellison. With Tyler Roberts batting, wild pitch by Taylor Siemens, Max Walla to 3rd. Tyler Roberts singles on a ground ball to first baseman Jonathan Griffin. Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging. Michael Nemeth grounds into a force out, second baseman Fidel Pena to shortstop Josh Parr. Max Walla scores. Tyler Roberts out at 2nd. Michael Nemeth to 1st. John Dishon singles on a ground ball to third baseman Ryan Court. Michael Nemeth to 2nd. Robert Garvey grounds out, pitcher Taylor Siemens to first baseman Jonathan Griffin.
  8. His K & BB rates are pretty close to Pedro's 2000 & 2001 seasons. Greinke's HR/9 & LOB% are the two stats that show where the ERA comes from. I still have faith he's going to get on a streak where he's just untouchable, & reel in the ERA.
  9. I explained to my dad tonight who Tony Plush was. He asked about the sign that said "I Gotta Go!" during the broadcast.
  10. It has to be the fact that only former Major League players are considered for these jobs I think a recent BAL manager hadn't played in the majors. Dave Trembley, iirc. And I think I remember hearing YES'S Michael Kay (think it was him) say he was the only active MLB manager to not have played. I agree wholeheartedly with your post, it seems like it'd be an easy decision to seek out the best strategist you can find. Was it during Macha's interview where Melvin quizzed a managerial candidate on in-game strategy? After Yost I think Melvin wanted better strategy, so he went with Macha. After Macha, he wanted a guy his players would like, so he went with Roenicke. Like DJ said, for one of only 30 jobs in MLB, you can't find a strategist that players like? It's a step, I'll take it. I will too, but I'm worried that he's going to matchups because he doesn't have anyone he wants to call his 8th inning guy & not because it's good strategy. And once someone (probably Loe), makes Roenicke fully confident in him, he's the new 8th inning guy™ I hope I'm wrong & Ron is making the call for the right reasons. EDIT: there's certainly hope: Braddock will match up against the left-handers. I still have a ton of confidence in Kameron. We brought him in yesterday and talked to him. But we're not going to probably put him out there when there's so many left-handers that he's got to go through."
  11. Insomniac Ink Russ is one, iirc
  12. I think two years of major league time is far more telling than minor league numbers from 3 or more years ago I said include MiLB time, not weight it heavier than recent seasons.
  13. I also get the impression RRR isn't a big Braddock fan
  14. This is in response to fondybrewfan's post #211 in this topic, which is sometimes visible & sometimes not when I click on this topic. Thanks Yuku! Of course he still could have fit Estrada's role. And for $1.4M, compared to Estrada's league-minimum I still tend to believe that both Grienke and Villanueva should regress to their career norms before the season is done. I'd have to guess this winds up being correct.
  15. Seeing lots of problems today. Just about every time I've tried to post, it just sits in limbo while the browser (FF 5.0) spins its wheels trying to post. I either see it stay in limbo or skip to a blank screen, or I'm kicked back to pg.1 of whatever topic I was reading, with no post made. And just in general, the forums are loading really slowly. Also, if I reload the Greinke topic in the MLB forum, fondybrewfan's post #211 may or may not be there.
  16. And if you're talking track record, you have to include MiLB success & Hardy's top prospect status too
  17. The Brewers need to be much more aggressive with their players though. Seid seems to favor more of the safe college players in his drafts which is fine I guess, but if you're going to do that they need to advance quickly. In his visit to the broadcast booth in last night's game, Melvin specifically mentioned that they want to be aggressive with Thornburg. He said something to the effect of, 'We want to get him some starts at Brevard, and then continue to be aggressive with him.' Sorry I don't recall that verbatim, but it definitely left me with the impression that Thornburg has the opportunity to pitch his way to Huntsville this season. Now, this coming after keeping him at Wisconsin for the entire first half makes you scratch your head a bit, and I've complained as much as anyone about the Crew needing to be more aggressive with player promotions. However, I'm very hopeful the Brewers will be aggressive from the get-go with someone like Jungmann.
  18. Not on DVD yet, but I saw Bridesmaids tonight. Exceptional comedy. It was hilarious, & well acted with an ensemble cast. Plus, every time 'that' type of comedy would've gone left, it went right. Just did a nice job telling the story in a different way while still being hysterical. I can't think of the last time I've heard people laughing so hard in the movie theater.
  19. Obviously, but then why say anything? Why not just leave it at, "We've been disappointed by his progress." Why even open the door to speculation? What's the objective? I dunno, my guess is he's trying to answer a question & not throw a guy under the bus all at once. I think you're reading too much into it.
  20. Or maybe Ash is just toeing the company line & not wanting to air how Arnett wasn't 'ready to go'
  21. Best & most succinct way to describe MP: HR park, but neutral overall offensive park. At least that's basically what it's been since it opened iirc.
  22. Flyball to medium RC, in play, run(s) scored
  23. The Reds are supposedly considering calling up SS Zack Cozart from AAA. Janish has suuucked at the plate this season, but he's a good defender & will probably hit about as well as Betancourt/Wilson/Counsell the rest of the way.
  24. Given Melvin's positive report on Manzanillo, if he pitches well at Huntsville I could see him getting a September call-up
  25. Adam McCalvy posted a bit more detail on the MRI results: PCL inflammation is a bit more troubling than plain old "inflammation." Call me crazy, but that seems like a pretty big note to omit.
