  1. There weren't any young stud pitchers to look for and unless Melvin trades some hitters next year will be a repeat of this year, decent offense, terrible pitching and a mediocre record. I apologize, as I feel I'm being redundant in different threads, but Melvin will absolutely have the opportunity to add at least one good, young SP this offseason. He may only have to move Hardy to do it.
  2. So I'm to be frustrated like you because you know what Melvin will (not) do this offseason? Frankly the notion that he's not going to move youth for young/cost-controlled SP this offseason makes me want to bang my head on my desk.
  3. It's not about "feeling good for the next two months"...it's about being terrified to think where this rotation and therefore team is going to be in 2010...2011...if he doesn't change the way he approaches free agency, more specifically how he acquires starting pitching. I am definitely listening to what folks have been saying, but I just don't share the cloudy outlook. The Brewers will be able to add the SPing that's needed this offseason by moving Hardy/Escobar/many other players.
  4. Do you mean Jed Lowrie?
  5. Who would be the "top pitching prospect in AAA/AA" from SEA? A real player?
  6. Then I guess I need you to explain what "look at what Melvin left us with for 2009 & 2010." I took that to mean he's done a poor job constructing the 2009 team & has no real plans to make the team better heading into 2010.
  7. Good points, Stevo... I guess if there's anything he could do (short of punching the Wilpons in the faces) to get fired, this is it.
  8. As the season marches on, I grow more & more concerned that there is a decent disconnect between Macha & the front office. However, given the way in which Macha commented, it almost sounds like the Villy start has been ordered from on high ("Our people think..."). The problem is that their offense is far from pitiful...they have a few guys who can really hurt you if you throw meatball. Ouch -- this is especially painful to read after tonight's "game"
  9. Definitely... congrats to R.J. for showing the doubters why he's been mowing guys down in AAA.
  10. With pitching this bad, and nothing on the horizon, realistically how much hope is there for next year? Actually quite a bit. Gamel will be the fulltime 3B (imho), one of Escobar/Hardy will be gone in a deal to bring in cost-controlled young(ish) SP, Weeks will be back, Bush will be back, Angel Salome could very well be the regular catcher (ridding the offense of its main black hole), Gallardo/Prince/Braun/rest of the youthful core will have one more year of experience, Cameron may well be back at good value. And of course the Cubs & Cards will be another year older. The fact that people are completely ignoring things that are out of Melvin's control this season (like injuries to Weeks/Bush, & injuries to almost literally every SP target the Brewers conceivably had on the trade market) is appalling to me. I guess Melvin's just the lightning rod this year since Yost is gone. Thank goodness Mark Attanasio has his head on straight & seems to have full faith in Melvin.
  11. Unbelievable. UeckerAddict hit the nail on the head. The funny part to me is that people basically want Melvin to burn the organizational depth so they can feel better for the next two months, and then just go back to complaining for the next 2 or 3 seasons.
  12. I have no idea what to say. In short, the Mets' VP of Player Development Tony Bernazard was fired today, after several ugly incidents, and with seemingly every player in the organization -- minors to majors -- happy to see him leave. But that's not the strange part (honestly). During the press conference announcing the decision, Minaya accused beat writer Adam Rubin of submarining Bernazard in order to get his job. You can almost see on Minaya's face his own realization that, 'Yeah, I guess I'm actually going to say this & make this allegation.' Absolutely unbelievable, and I for one would be shocked if Minaya keeps his job through the end of the 2009 season. I apologize, as I can't figure out how to embed the video clips in this post. I'd ask any moderator to do so if possible, or any other user to just post them if possible. SNY.tv multimedia page -- Watch at least these two clips, and in this order: 1) "Minaya on Bernazard firing" ... 2) "Rubin responds to Omar's accusation" EDIT: Deadspin's take, "Minaya Calls Out Daily News Reporter; Mets' Season Descends Further Into Farce"
  13. What, Jorge Julio wasn't available? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  14. Talk about a strawman... What a convenient way for you to belittle and mock all those whose opinions differs from your's. I don't follow. You said pitch counts are for little-leaguers & talked about players being babied. Is that not belittling the concept? I have to stop, though. No good will come of my participation in this any further.
  15. Super-small sample alert, but Swindle had AAA all-star hitters looking completely lost at this year's ASG. I think the sheer fact that his stuff is so slow & unique gives him an edge.
  16. It's just not even worth it. The 'pitch counts are for losers' camp is firmly entrenched. I have literally no understanding as to why there's so much mocking & belittling of this. Like I said, if people aren't willing to look into this on their own, I don't feel like anyone should have to do that work for them. Though I think it does say something when you're dismissing something you aren't even willing to research. Everyone is different, to think you can apply average results to any individual and expect perfect correlation is rediculous. No one said this, and this is a strawman that comes out almost every time this topic resurfaces.
  17. One element of the Lopez & Gerut acquisitions that I appreciate from Melvin is that both guys are potential long(ish)-term solutions. Both players filled an immediate need, but I like that there's a plan involved beyond a band-aid fix.
  18. A pitch count of 105 can get to 120 with as few as two batters (heck, even one in a mega at-bat). So yes, (imo) Macha running Gallardo back out when he was already at 105 was basically stating that he was willing to work him up towards 120 or higher. Honestly what is the issue with calling Gallardo young? 23 isn't young now? Neither you nor anyone else knows precisely how many pitches in each game is the optimal number for Yo to throw Actually there's been a lot of research done on this topic, and frankly if you don't want to take the time to look into it &/or take the findings seriously, I don't see the point in continuing this discussion. I really don't understand why you find monitoring the usage of a young, center-of-the-team's-core SP so laughable. I wonder what you felt about Ben Sheets during his tenure as a Brewer -- better usage of Sheets may have helped him stay a lot healthier. Not sure why the Brewers should risk Gallardo's long-term health just because a handful of people make fun of the concept.
  19. In addition to being another utility guy, the fact that Lopez's stats favor him facing RHP would complement the RH Weeks, Hardy/Escobar, & McGehee. That said, I agree that Lopez would not likely want to take on a utility/backup role.
  20. If you are suggesting platooning Hall with Hardy, it seems like it would make more sense to call up Escobar and have him platoon with Hardy at that point. It doesn't seem like platooning a RHB with another RHB would accomplish much.
  21. People can dismiss pitch counts, really doesn't change anything. Pitchers (esp. young ones) that are routinely worked well over 100 pitches get hurt more. I really don't know why anyone tries to dispute this & make it an issue of 'being a man'/'being a baby'
  22. I still don't really understand why the Brewers care about Huntsville's attendance. If it's related to funding for a theoretical new stadium, I guess I get it.
  23. Tried the Bear Republic Racer 5 last night. It was good, but I didn't think it was anything I hadn't had before. Very solid IPA, but those seem to be all over the place on the West Coast/in the Pac. NW. Looking forward to going through the rest of my goody-bag this week. (Thanks, EDR!) I was worried there would be no Brewers Baseball talk, but we pulled it off and a good time was had. You'd never freakin' believe... after we met up on Sun. morning, I saw a guy wearing a Brewers (current logo, so you know it's legit) hat walking down the sidewalk. I would have said something to him, but you can't exactly roll the streetcar's windows down. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. That's definitely what I started to mentally prepare myself for after reading that article. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif
  25. Ugh... thanks for linking that update. I'd been wondering about Dave. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
