  1. Well depending on who they would've gotten back(Lee, Peavey or Halladay who are all signed through next year). I would have done it. I am very glad Doug Melvin doesn't share your views. Unless DM is willing to go out into FA next year and get a legitimate top of the rotation starter or two, this team will be no better next year. Or he will trade one of Hardy/Escobar as a main piece to bring back young(ish), cost-controlled SP. Or Hart+prospects. But other than being able to offer MLB ready, young, affordable talent, in addition to strong hitting prospects, yeah -- his hands are totally tied. Yeah, it's hard for me to give up just yet as well. The Cubs have really been hurt by injuries this season, and with plenty of head-to-head games left v. STL & CHN, this race is far from actually being over. Another thing that's being left out of discussion is that everyone should know the trading deadline won't adversely affect any in-season deal Melvin would make, at least from the Brewers' perspective. Any offer from MIL at this point would likely be comprised of all prospects, since it seems pretty clear the MLB guys like Hart & Hardy won't move until the offseason.
  2. Just like it's not his fault that all 3 of the Brewers' SP targets early in the season went down with injuries on the same day. Yet the fact that Melvin played to stay ahead of this kind of frenzy & additionally get more starts out of those pitchers earns him no credit. I am glad he didn't overpay to take this team from 82 wins to 84 wins or whatever.
  3. Iirc Kotchman is supposed to be a next-level fielder at 1B... so if the bats are roughly equal, I guess it makes sense in that context. And I agree with MessiahRp -- Lowell's lack of ability to play 'everyday' anymore is very relevant, almost as much as Youkilis's defensive versatility. I thought the same thing (Lowell needing more time off) when they added LaRoche. I read that Lowell should probably be expected to need roughly one in every 5 games/days off.
  4. That's really why I don't understand this move for the Cubs. If they're moving Hart, how big of an actual upgrade to their rotation is Gorzelanny?
  5. Not to mention the diamond has told you it wants to be somewhere else. Funny analogy, RyDogg... the one I thought of today was that Ricciardi is like a poker player... JP: Raise Call ... Call ... Call (going around the table) JP: Ok, I raise again. What do you mean I can't do that?
  6. Anybody who was living off the kool-aid before the season and thought the Brewers really could compete with this staff has to be getting a cold dose of reality right about now "This pitching staff" included a healthy Bush and Parra taking a step forward (which, btw, there is still plenty of time for). So to try to throw that line in people's faces isn't entirely fair. And of course, once again people ignore the reality that the Brewers were in locked-&-loaded mode on Peavy, Bedard, & Halladay, right as all 3 went down with injuries in one of the weirdest bits of bad luck this franchise has had in this frustrating season. Bill Castro is not the problem. I would hate to see him turned into a lightning rod.
  7. The Brewers said prior to his start he would have a pitch count of 60 pitches. He left the game at 67 pitches, and entered the 4th inning at 46. It seems the second turn through the order was not a great idea, and perhaps setting a pitch count of 60 was too greedy for a reliever whose previous high was 56 over 3 innings (7/20 @ PIT).
  8. It might be useful to look at Gallardo's pitch counts this season: 103 100 103 106 116 108 102 94 126 97 110 105 116 107 118 114 102 93 113 118 116 Here's Gallardo's Baseball-reference.com 2009 game logs page, complete with play-by-play box scores. He has averaged roughly 108 pitches per start. 8 of his 21 starts have seen him throw over 110 pitches
  9. This is a feature they do on every /any stadium. I thought it was funny-ish, but the comments just kind of repeated the similar jokes. Maybe if Miller Park didn't routinely score well on serious objective reviews, I would be more bothered. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. I don't think the slams on Villa's last outing are completely fair. This is a guy that worked as a one or two inning RP, and wasn't stretched out at all. He pitched three great innings, and as he neared or passed his projected pitch count for the day, he ran out of gas & got hit. I think it's also fair to include that he had success facing the lineup in just the first go-round, but I will definitely wait to be really critical. I thought he was fantastic for the innings in which he should have been expected to step up.
  11. In general, I've been a fan of Huntington's apparent m.o. McLouth is really the only player they moved that is close to being an impact player, and they seem to have added some useful players. One of the blogs quoted even refers to him as a 1B and not a catcher. I think the short porch at PNC might help enhance Clement's value as a hitter. Whether it will be enough to justify him playing at 1B is another topic, but at worst it seems like the Bucs added a couple of young, cheap placeholders in Clement & Cedeno.
  12. I noticed during the CWS-MIN broadcast last night that Justin Morneau leads the AL in HR & RBI. Fielder has a better RBI total, and iirc only trails Morneau by one HR. However, I don't see any way Fielder would beat out the almight HR admirer & media darling. That's too bad, because Prince has been a strong MVP contender the whole season long imo.
  13. Yeah! He had a good night! Freakin' amazin'! Strike up the Band! Here comes that huge second half! My point is that it wasn't fluky, and his swing looked like the swing we know from J.J. Hardy. I would not be surprised at all to see him start hitting, and agree with your desire to see a big second half from him.
  14. That's good speculation, rotoherb. Hardy is still young enough to fit in well with Baltimore's rebuild efforts. I recall thinking highly of several trades they've made recently, but don't ask me which ones aside from the Bedard deal. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. I didn't mean that this thread was annoying. I think it's great to have a thread on the manager. My comment just after you stopped the quote of my post in your most recent one clearly explains that. I am not going to change your mind. We completely disagree on Hart, Parra (I know Ennder posted in another thread a long, long list of young talented SP that have struggled this year. It really is par for the course), Bush, & Hardy. I also heartily disagree that Bill Hall is an important part of the team's future. I think he will be jettisoned in the offseason.
  16. Great point, Stevo. I hope the lengthy discussions the F.O. braintrust has been having of late have included really analyzing internal SP options (like Cody, for example). I am definitely not in agreement that losing Suppan will be the nail in the coffin Witrado asserted. I'd really even be open to them stretching Villy out at the MLB level, since he looked quite good tonight until pitching past his pitch count limit.
  17. Lee was just an example I used in place of a mediocre SP like Washburn. Part of the problem for Melvin this year (& honestly something that just gets glossed over by many, instead choosing to blame Melvin for not getting pitching) is that several SP injuries really complicated the trade market. I think we all have a gut feeling that Mark A is this way I know for a fact we all don't feel this way. Just because it gets repeated as conjecture on internet message boards doesn't mean much. Mark A. actually is pretty candid about letting his baseball guys do their thing. The Suppan contract is way overstated, as clearly Mark was on board... but so was Melvin & his staff.
  18. Corey Hart has played well within reasonable expectations, and has had good results of late. "Way too many players?" I think if you looked around the league you'd find a comparable number of guys on most teams. The notion that Sveum & Castro have anything to do with this imho is just a reflection of the Brewers losing quite a few games of late. But I guess if you only focus on the negative, it's easy to find scapegoats. Seriously... Bill Hall, a "key [piece] of the team for years to come?" Dave Bush's stats from a few starts don't tell us anything that's close to being as reliable as his career stats. Hardy has had a down year at the plate so far... it happens, even to good players. Parra struggled out of the gates, but has also looked very good at times this year. Basically par for the course with young/growing SP. At this point, I miss the vent thread. If it could be made into a place where people are allowed to just make these kinds of venting posts without allowing others to correct erroneous assertions, it would seem preferable to the same types of comments surfacing in numerous other threads. I mean, we actually have a thread claiming that if Jack Z. were back in the role of scouting director, the problems wouldn't exist. Seriously?
  19. For example, some "stat people" believe it's a foregone conclusion that Hardy is going to finish strong. Some people that look at other things might tell you otherwise. J.J. sure looked like the J.J. we know tonight. Maybe these "stat people" utilize data in a relatively reliable way.
  20. As poorly as the pitching has performed of late, Melvin is right. One SP could change things drastically, as long as it's not someone like Washburn. The team is 5 games behind the Wild Card lead & 4 games behind the NL Central lead. I think the frustration is clouding that right now. Will one SP be 'worth' 3 wins from 7/28/09 through the end of the season? Incredibly unlikely. However, with plenty of games remaining against the teams the Brewers are chasing, the season is anything but over. Suppan has been below replacement level this season (iirc) anyway, so his injury could actually work out to be a blessing in disguise. I think one topic that had to have been discussed at length is whether or not Bush will be able to return soon. If he can, and you add a SP like say Cliff Lee, your 1-4 is Gallardo/[Lee]/Bush/Parra, which is pretty darn solid.
  21. These players should be progressing and not regressing. I truly feel the coaches are not of much help, and Macha is to blame for selecting them on his staff. Which players are you talking about? I can think of Hardy & maybe Parra (though I don't think you can be sure with Manny yet). McGehee is one notable that appears to have progressed, but just about every other young player has progressed or performed roughly as expected. The reason I think Macha kept Castro & Sveum is that they are capable coaches who already knew the core players very well, and Macha obviously had zero familiarity with the team.
  22. If I'm a stat man like Macha, that's good enough to tell me he is garbage Actually, if you are a stat man, you recognize that 152 IP is still a small sample. Not sure of the appropriate adjective for 4 -- 'bordering on the non-existant'? Hey, Villy had 3 scoreless innings tonight, that's enough of a sample to tell me he's an ace. Why does it seem that just a few understand that this team lost two all-star pitchers from their rotation? It's not hard to understand why they're struggling. I have been asking myself the same question lately.
  23. Macha's comment that, "Our people believe he gives us the best chance to win," makes me think Ken wasn't the one that decided who would be the starter today.
  24. I doubt enough pitchers get hurt in fluky non-pitching ways to skew the numbers noticeably.
