  1. A little off tangent, but what is Yuni's 'walk up music'?
  2. Watch Parra go to Colorado and turn into another JDLR. Even though I don't think Stewart is as good as others here, I would do that trade- I thought Parra was almost ready to go.
  3. Minnesota has to be devastated. Best Twin ever, and a great ambassador to the game.
  4. Who didn't on Cleveland?
  5. I think that he's a DH exclusively at this point and I'm not willing to give him $10 million to find out if he can play first.
  6. His salary can be cut to league minimum as long as he isn't offered arbitration by his own team. Thanks for the info. So if the Brewers were to trade for him, they'd have to go to arbitration next winter or non-tender him. Has a player ever received a pay cut in arby?
  7. Stewart might even get non tendered next season, what is the maximum that his salary can be cut- 15% or something?
  8. McGehee has more total bases since this thread was started yesterday than Stewart has had all season. The only intrigue that Stewart would have to some here would be that I'm sure that BA had him high in the 'Top 100'. So was Brandon Wood. What a crappy left side of the infield that would be.
  9. No way would I even consider trading McGehee for Stewart. He would be an upgrade defensively (as would 90% of MLB 3rd basemen), but he's been pretty brutal at the plate. Strikes out all the time and has a career BA 50 points less then McGehee (I know a lot of people disregard those stats somewhat, but still- no decent hitter has a career .237 playing home games in Coors with all the open spaces in that outfield). Another huge factor would be that Stewart makes almost $2 million more than McGehee this season, so the odds are decent that even with a brutal season he will make more in 2012 arby than McGehee. Pass.
  10. Point taken, but I think you still have to play to win now. If the Angels were to call and offer Trout, even I would have a tough time turning it down, but as I said, no way would the Angels trade him. If the Brewers do tank and try to move Fielder, I think everyone will be very disappointed with what he will bring (think the Carlos Lee deal). I think you'd be looking at a bunch of low minors guys. Maybe due to the Lee/Cruz deal, I'm a cynic, but I remember when Greg Vaughn was tearing up the league with impending free agency and Bando turned him into Newfield, Florie and Villone.
  11. I agree on the Mammoth Cave suggestion. The place is really cool (literally and figuratively), but be sure to order tickets in advance, otherwise you may not be able to get in for one of the 'full tours'. You could hit Lincoln's birthplace which is just north of the caves- not too far off the beaten path. If you want to go to a distillery, even though it's 'Tennessee Whiskey', not bourbon, you have to hit the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg. Very interesting (and free). I think it's in the general direction that you are traveling, maybe an hour or so south of Nashville. I think they have tours every half hour or so, no reservation necessary.
  12. This argument has been so overused on this site over the last 3 years... has an argument as unsupportable as this ever had more run? It's literally been used in every thread we've had for trading an established MLB Brewer player for a prospect in season. The only other statement that's close is the proven/unproven thing, we're certainly dropping plenty of cliches into a single thread here. The obvious point that someone else made is that possibly in the short term Trout + Gamel > Gomez + Fielder. In the long-term there's no doubt that 6+ years of Trout and 5 years of Gamel is worth more than 2/3 of a Fielder season + whatever the team gets out Gomez. I struggle with the fact that a concept so simple is routinely dismissed or ignored, the merits of a deal of this type is are obvious. This exactly like the whole Hardy for Buccholz deal I wanted to make when Hardy was actually hitting... Escobar + Buccholz > Hardy + Looper but just couldn't seem to get their minds around the trade. I'd much rather have Buccholz than Greinke, we'd still have Jeffress, Cain, and Odorizzi. Heaven forbid we ever make a deal when we can sell high on a player that can have an immediate impact as well as solidfy the future... I know, that's crazy talk. It's much better to make Overbay and Hardy deals when pinned in a corner so we end up with impact talent like Gomez, Jackson, Bush, and Gross... If the Angels are dumb enough to trade us Trout for Fielder, that's a deal Melvin should make 100% of the time, whatever the rest of the trade looks like. There's less than a .1% chance this deal would go through in any form, and certainly I wouldn't count on the Angels overpaying for a rental. The original Teixeira trade has had a lasting impact on MLB, teams just don't make those kinds of deals for rentals anymore... and by the way, the throw in player in the Teixeira trade was one of my all time favorite prospects and might be the best young closer in baseball, Neftali Feliz. I still think Feliz should be in the rotation but that's a discussion for another time. I disagree. How is this team going to contend this season by trading arguably their best offensive weapon? I think that it's a tremendous leap of faith to assume that Gamel could come in and pull the load or even that the team could take the 'Prince money' and adequately fill the void (even if they were to raid the farm again). As for the Angels, they wouldn't trade Trout under any circumstances. I saw an article comparing him to Mickey Mantle for heaven's sake (though due to my cynicism of any prospect, especially a 19 year old at AA, I'd say the odds are long that he will ever even hit the 200 MLB homers that Prince has). In closing, would the Angels make the deal? Absolutely not. This makes the whole thing a moot point.
  13. Very sad. We have been losing a bunch of great ones in recent years (players AND people).
  14. This deal makes no sense for either team. The Brewers would be waving the flag on 2011, and the Angels are already in first place. Why would they trade their top prospect for a rental player when Trumbo is putting up pretty good numbers for them?
  15. Make this deal, and you're giving up on the season. This is the type of deal that a rebuilding team would make, I don't care how good Trout projects to be.
  16. I'll be optimistic and say that Loe is showing effects of overuse. He looks nothing like he did last year- only two complete 'clean' innings in 20 appearances.
  17. Well, he was too lazy to take the ball out of his glove.....
  18. Man I didn't know you held ALL of those guys I listed in my original post in the same breath as Molitor and Yount. Now I understand why we aren't able to get those "Hall of Famers" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif A guy can dream, can't he? Molly still looks like he could put up a decent OBP. Kind of like the Ty Cobb quote when he was about 70 years old, and someone asked him what he thought he'd hit in 'today's game'. He said something to the effect that "I'd hit .300, but what do you expect, I'm 70?"
  19. Greinke because he's two years younger. Marcum will be 32 years old the first season after he hits free agency. I will say that I've been very impressed with Marcum, but if he loses a few MPH on the fastball, it will be about the same speed as everything else. The guy certainly knows how to pitch though.
  20. He would have been a great pickup for the Brewers in about 1998 under the same circumstances. No contender will take a chance on him. Frankly, I'd be surprised if anyone took a chance on him. Plus he already has his money, he may not want to play this year since he's going to get paid no matter what.
  21. Frankly, I think the defining moment of this team may have been Saturday. By winning that game they stemmed the tide a little bit, and more importantly Gallardo perhaps started a turn around. It would have been easier to say this had they won yesterday, but they were staring a double digit losing streak (a la last year) straight in the face.
  22. Paul Molitor and Robin Yount? Those two were about the prototype of what you want. Unfortunately they are once in a generation type talents. I know what you're saying though. A Shane Victorino/Rafael Furcal type combo at the top of the lineup would be perfect.
  23. I don't see Furcal being a pipe dream at all. If the Dodgers continue to tank (and the Brewers stop tanking), I could see the Dodgers willing to move Furcal if he doesn't fit into their payroll/plans for the future. Don't they have like 8 'prospect' shortstops over there? The issue is that I'm sure they'd want a few good young players, but still likely much less than the Mets would want for Reyes. You might be able to get Hardy back from Baltimore for a song though.
