  1. I disagree. Escobar played very poorly defensively last season during the first half when the team was starting to tank. During that time, I remember lots of crucial game changing errors on easy plays that Betancourt has thus far looked pretty dependable at converting into outs. Going further, Escobar was basically an automatic out at the plate, and generally played with his head in his rear (on the basepaths, etc.). The reason that he's so highly regarded defensively is that he can make the highlight reel, he can also make the blooper reel just as much. It's not like he's extremely young either, and based on the way he's hitting this season, I'm glad the Brewers moved him while he still had some value.
  2. If Yuni keeps this hot streak going a few more games, he's going to be hitting .300. Frankly, after today I'm more worried about Gallardo (who's looked like he's switched places with Marco Estrada or something). It's pretty disheartening when they score 6 runs and lose with their #1b on the mound.
  3. He'd probably be a better option than Nick Punto, and I'm not joking.
  4. I don't know, but outside of a few great performances he's been pretty much brutal since last August. This year, the 'overused' explanation isn't going to work. When is it time to start to worry?
  5. I have a feeling that this is going to be one of the longest threads ever on this site.... As I've said before, I'm pulling for Betancourt mainly because he is the best option, hasn't been as bad as advertised- and there are a lot of haters among the Baseball Prospectus fans and the like. That said, it would be tough for anyone to argue that Betancourt has not been better than what Escobar was last year. Frankly, Escobar was brutal in every aspect of the game, including defense. At the same time, I don't think Betancourt is as good as 2009 Hardy- who apparently 'deserved' his demotion to AAA. He's somewhere in between, not a 'good' player, but not the worst player in baseball, either- I don't care what the advanced metrics or the pundits say.
  6. Agreed. I'm really starting to pull for Betancourt, because there are so many people who want him to fail. I'm waiting for some of the skeptics to admit that he's been better than they expected, but all I hear about is this lack of range. Most of the plays I've seen cited here illustrating this lack of range would have been infield hits anyway.
  7. I wouldn't give up much for Reyes. I think he's pretty overrated, and will undoubtedly be gone after this season anyway. I doubt that he would have the impact that a front line pitcher and/or power bat would have. If the Dodgers tank, I'd rather see them go after Furcal (if healthy) if they must get a shortstop. Though quite a bit older, he's basically the same player as Reyes, and would likely come much cheaper. He might even be signable after the season.
  8. I know that Lee was booed heavily his first year with the Astros. There aren't many former Brewers who receive a warm welcome on their return to Milwaukee. Even Molitor had a mixed response at first, and later I remember going to a post-strike game ('95 I think) where the (quite small) crowd was particularly brutal to him. I'm guessing that if Prince went to a rival, he'd be pretty much booed out of the stadium.
  9. Exactly. There is a ton of revisionist history regarding Nowitzki and the Bucks. Don Nelson was in love with him and the Bucks took him specifically for Dallas. It's not like they drafted him for themselves, and Dallas pried him out of their hands with an offer they couldn't refuse, the way a lot of people make it sound. I don't even think Nowitzki was very highly rated, because I remember screaming at the TV 'Who?'. That was the year that Paul Pierce slipped, so I was hoping that the Bucks were going to take him. I wasn't exactly enamored with Traylor either. Never could figure out why Karl always wanted a small big man who bogged down the offense.
  10. Thanks for the info. We'll probably need it, as this likely won't be the last time that Wood goes on waivers.
  11. I'd pay a good amount of money for the Miller Park sound folks to play 'Been Caught Stealing' tonight while Leake warms up before the first. They should have had a charity drive or something for it.
  12. His name keeps coming up, so I have to ask..... honestly, why do people like Nick Punto so much? He's a very poor man's Counsell. He can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag, and his defense at shortstop is average at best. Why would you waste a roster spot on someone like him when you already have Counsell?
  13. The original Four Horsemen- Flair, Blanchard, Ole and Arn Andrerson- managed by James J. Dillon. Back in my wrestling fandom days, I loved watching these guys on Saturday nights on WTBS. The old school Heenan Family was great as well, Nick Bockwinkel and Ray 'the Crippler' Stevens, the Blackjacks, etc.
  14. So honestly, who would people rather have out at short this season for the Brewers- Escobar or Betancourt? Don't even factor the Greinke trade into the equation. Escobar has been almost an automatic out this season, I've admitedly seen him play very little this season, but the stats seem to indicate that his fielding has improved from last season. Yes, he has upside, but the guy is going to be 25 years old, Hardy was an all star at this age. Everyone likes to bag on Gomez, but I've seen much more out of him than I've seen over Escobar and he's only a year or so older.
  15. At this point, I can definitely say that Betancourt is an upgrade over 2010 Escobar both in the field and at the plate. That's not saying much, but based on the way Alcides is stinking up the joint at the plate this season, he's looking more and more like a bust in waiting. No doubt that he would have been a black hole at the plate this season- at least Yuni generally puts decent wood on the ball. I think his defensive acumen, or lack thereof is being a little overrated here- more specifically, he almost always makes the plays that he should, I've seen much worse out there- including Escobar last year.
  16. Nice start. Brandon Boggs now has more regular season homers in Brewers uniform in one at bat than Dickerson had at the end of last season and this spring.
  17. I agree. I've never understood the logic behind taking the first pitch just because. That may be the best pitch you see if you fall behind 0-1.
  18. I don't see why not if he's available for free, what's the risk? I don't remember him causing any issues last time he was here, plus I know that he's pretty good friends with Weeks. If he becomes a problem, just dump him. He'd be a nice bat off the bench.
  19. Original Busch? I prefer Sportsman's Park. Back in the day, when anyone bought a team, they slapped their name right on there. At any rate, now that the Brewers are in the National League, I can see why the Cubs and Cardinal fans have hated each other for ever. Both fan bases are extremely annoying.
  20. Sort of on topic, but Kudos to the Portland fan who drilled Cuban with something in the face last night, while Cuban was once again making a horse's behind of himself. I wouldn't want this egomaniac anywhere near the Brewers, he always seems to be quite the attention 'seeker' at the games, baiting refs and opposing fans. I guess what some people see as 'passionate', I see as self-promoting. Bottom line, despite all the acclaim, how many rings has he won in his tenure in Dallas?
  21. I'm with those who think that in baseball a bye would be to the disadvantage of the team receiving it. It seems like over the years that the team who sweeps out of the LCS with a long delay until the WS often plays poorly in the WS when opposed to the team who's been playing all along. If they 'have' to add a bunch of wild card teams, I think that you need byes though. The Wild Card teams play each other 3 times in 4 days in a best of 3 series, with the next round the next day. This would obviously cause scheduling nightmares in the event of playoff ties, etc/ rainouts as well.
  22. He's not senile, he's always been an idiot who only follows the Red Sox and maybe the Yankees.
  23. Here, here. Baseball is really the only pro sport left where making the playoffs is still an accomplishment. Allowing more teams in the post-season mix waters down the importance of the regular season, granting the pundits the ammo to attack it as 'being too long'.
  24. Don't forget Estrada. By the end of his season here, he was so fat that it looked like he could hardly get out of the squatting position.
