  1. Wow, Scottsdale. Looks like Gracie is going to be wearing pink underwear in tent city in the near future.
  2. Just read an article on former Brewer Bob McClure getting the ax in Boston and was stunned to learn that Jerry Royster actually has a MLB coaching gig. I've watched quite a few Red Sox games this season and didn't notice this for some reason. To be kind.... I'll just say that I'm a wee bit surprised that someone would hire him for an on-field MLB job.
  3. As my gag reflex kicks in(I'm kidding....kinda) I agree with you, and I've actually always agreed on Villanueva. It's never made ANY sense to me why we where SO damn quick with the hook when it came to Villanueva, but not with anyone else. Literally, with anyone-else. For some reason, Macha didn't like him from the get go. I remember him harping on Villanueva's control the first Spring training he was here, then he spent the rest of his time burying him with Soup and Parra in the rotation during most of that stretch.
  4. Speaking of Sheets, I'd rather give him $6.5 million and sign 3 relievers than give Marcum a tender for roughly the same price.
  5. There is no point in making Gagne/Riske type gambles. Melvin needs to go out and sign any reliever who has 'plus stuff' and is willing to sign a one year deal after the 'first wave' of relievers have signed. I'd sweep in and hand out some NRI's as well. I'd assume that as we stand there are about 4 openings for next season, and hopefully they have about a dozen guys in camp battling it out for those spots. You have to catch lightning in a bottle.
  6. You have to let Marcum walk at this point. I will be irate if they offer him $13 million. My money says that he lands in Kansas City on a make good deal next season. He's not going to get a multi-year deal... at least not at anywhere near the salary he is shooting for.
  7. Howard is a pure cancer. I wonder how many games the honeymoon in L.A. will last. The bad thing is that he didn't sign an extension, so this nonsense will probably start up again in a few months. I stopped reading the articles/caring several months ago, but I'm so tired of seeing this diva in the headlines almost everyday.
  8. The '7th inning guy', the '8th inning guy' and the closer have all been brutal. It's tough to win when you don't leave starters in the game and those gas cans are called upon to protect a lead. The other guys in the pen have been up and down, but that's to be expected on the back end of the pen. Time to give Henderson a chance to close. From what I've read this morning, Roenicke has made that decision. Based on Brewer history, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he was almost perfect in save opportunities down the stretch.
  9. Unless he finishes the season in complete Suppan-esque fashion, I don't think that Greinke's performance is going to hurt his value a bit, though the Angels may shy away a bit- especially if Haren continues his recent turnaround. Bottom line, unless ZG gets injured down the stretch, he's going to be the most sought after toy during the holiday shopping season. We all know how some big market teams love the newest, 'bestest' and most expensive toy...
  10. I don't get it. Texas is in America. texan politics, Texas IS America So Tyler finally got the annexation ratified? Interesting. I wonder how Spain will take to that.
  11. Agreed. I'm all for keeping Gamel on the roster. There's no reason that he can't be a bench guy.
  12. I'd look into giving him a reasonable extension at this point. With his glove and his speed, he can always serve a purpose. Anything that he does with his bat is just gravy.
  13. I think that Hart has been pretty durable over his career. As far as I can remember, he only missed a that stint at the beginning of last season, and that one year he missed awhile due to getting an appendectomy. Has he even missed a game this season? I'd actually say that he's been probably the most durable Brewer full time position player on the roster as it stands (granted with this MASH unit, that's not saying too much, but still).
  14. Awesome. Only 14.5 games back. Seriously, I'm stunned they pulled this sweep off. This team certainly is maddening, but kudos to them for not starting to pack it in.
  15. Former Brewer Jody Reed is the poster boy for someone who turned down a contract to live to regret it. The money doesn't sound like much these days, but it was big money back then. http://www.bostonspastime.com/jodyreed.html
  16. I think that the Brewers could let Seattle take their choice of any 5 Brewer players currently in the minors and they still wouldn't even consider it. It would take a King's ransom the land him, pun intended.
  17. To me, the whole question when it comes to Hart is twofold. What will you get for him, and how will you use the money that you save? As far as what you may get in a trade, I look at the Pence deal to get a feel on it. To me, that return was pretty underwhelming, and you will probably get less for Hart in the off season and certainly less during the season next year. You most certainly are not going to get an impact arm for him, so- best case, you'll may get a couple of arms with potential- but with warts. Frankly, I think that the Brewers have enough of those guys right now in the system. As for the salary relief moving him would provide, where could it be better used? On a free agent deal for a second line SP? I don't like that risk. You are going to overpay, and as we've seen, Suppan was a disaster and Wolf has been pretty much a push. I don't like the risk/reward to those types of deals. Suppan was an unmitigated disaster, and though Wolf actually turned out OK, he looks horrible this season. I suppose you could find a situation where a high salary guy has worn out his welcome somewhere (Carlos Lee, Greinke), but in that case, you are going to have to give up something for them. Now if trading Hart meant freeing up payroll room to sign a guy like Greinke, I might have listened, but that ship has sailed.
  18. Well he switched to 1B mostly because of his decline in ability to play RF. That switch in and of itself has caused a decline in his value. He will probably be a 2.5-3 WAR player this year. That's a decline and its played out right in front of us so I don't know how you can't see it. In addition, we've seen him just "lose it" for more than just a bad month or two. Fair or not, that's always going to stick around in the back of people's minds. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I really don't think Hart is that bad at all in RF, especially when watching some of the guys that other teams put out there. I saw the reason for the switch to 1B more to take over for Green/Ishakawa who were dreadful/hurt, while opening up a regular role for Aoki.
  19. The problem that I see with the Bucks' bigs as they stand is that none look to be real effective offensively around the basket. For the centers, I'm OK with that, but I see more problems with the glut of PF. Ersan and Gooden both provide offense, but a lot of that comes in the form of jumpers. I see Luc as more of a small forward, and the other three have an overlapping skill set. A bruiser PF who can consistently put the ball in the basket and get to the line certainly would be nice, because otherwise we are going to be looking at another offense dominated by the two guards and Dunleavy.... this means another offense very dependent on the jumper. I wish that they would have pursued Elton Brand and used him to replace either Sanders/Udoh (who I see as almost completely interchangeable) in the rotation. Hopefully Henson's offense develops, but I don't see it.... certainly not right away.
  20. I think that Hart will end up getting an Adam Dunn type deal on the market. I'd say 4 years, mid 50's to 60 million. At that price, I'd be pretty inclined to sign him. Where could you better spend the money? Good free agents don't come cheap, and as we've seen, the Brewers are going to get second tier guys at best, and likely overpay for them.
  21. I keep seeing this notion that you dump Hart and can easily plug someone in to fill his spot- for 'cheap', none the less. I just don't see it. Once again, his slugging percentage is over .500, and he's 7th in the league in total bases on pace for another year with ~30 homers. I also don't understand this concept that he's near his expiration date and he needs to be 'sold high' either. He's only 30 years old for heaven's sake, and I haven't seen any decline in his ability. I can't see why he wouldn't continue being productive barring injury for at least 5 more years.
  22. I was so excited to see what Gamel was able to provide this year and he screwed it all up I hear you- he never should have put forth maximum effort chasing that foul ball....
  23. I see no reason to trade Gamel. He can theoretically play multiple positions, and would provide a decent bat of the bench. Most importantly, he's cheap. I do have a feeling that it's going to be either he or Green though, and I'd be surprised if both are on the roster next season.
  24. That didn't take long. I'm assuming that they called him up to play and not vegetate on the bench.
  25. He's 14-3, so I have to bump this to admit that I was completely wrong. Burnett could be in the mix for the Cy Young award, and I give him a lot of credit for bouncing back from that injury and pitching so well after he looked so bad the past few years. Pittsburgh is usually where veterans go to die.
