  1. By all accounts I've seen, I don't think that Bonds started juicing until after '98. He was already a HOF at that point, so it's somewhat sad that he laid all that on the line because he was envious of the attention that McGwire and Sosa were getting. I also subscribe to the theory (conspiracy) that the ball was juiced in an '87-esque way beginning in or around the '95 post streak era. I think that you have to judge guys from this era in that context. The known juicers have an additional strike against them for me. As for Piazza, I don't really think that it's fair to lump him in with the juicers. However, I will normalize his stats a bit because he hit his peak during the 'chicks dig the long ball era'. In the end, I think he's a HOF, just not a first ballot HOF... yes, I'm one of 'those guys' that makes the distinction. By the way, does anyone else feel that writers should not be able to vote for 10 guys? I think that perhaps limiting things to 3-5 guys would force them to think about their ballots more.
  2. http://i.imgur.com/2UBzL.gif Call me crazy, but outside of 90's fantasy baseball catchers, I wouldn't say that Piazza had a dominating career. Outside of HR, his counting stats aren't really that gaudy considering when he played. Yes, he hit over 400 homers, but he played in an era where 400 became the new 300. He never won an MVP either. Obviously, his OPS scores him some huge points with many folks. He also gets bonus points for catching, but he was a poor thrower. I didn't watch him enough to speak to his defensive prowess or lack thereof in other areas, but his defensive reputation isn't all that great. I definitely think he is worthy of consideration, and someone I would likely vote for down the road, but first ballot HOF, I'm not so sure.
  3. I knew this would be a hot topic here.... I'd have voted for Biggio, Trammell and Morris myself. Trammell getting 30 percent of the vote, the year after Larkin got in is the biggest travesty here if you ask me. I'd give Piazza a lot of thought, but I'd need a bit more convincing. He's seems to be right there with Bagwell, a bit of steroid suspicion, but also not a truly dominating career with no major offensive milestones hit in an era of offensive explosion.
  4. Nice move. Hopefully, they can grab one more vet for the pen.
  5. Gomez is a tough case for me. I'd like to keep him around, but he way I see it, either he keeps the momentum going and prices himself out of Milwaukee or he plays poorly and plays his way out of town. With Boras as his agent, I just don't see a future for him with the Brewers- so even though I'd generally be opposed to breaking up this lineup, Gomez would be the one guy that I'd listen on. The problem is that you'd almost have to trade him for pitching, and it's hard to imagine someone adding a player like Gomez while parting with anything meaningful and/or close in that department. Too bad the White Sox didn't need a CF.
  6. How exactly is anything that happened with the Cubs prior to Epstein's arrival relevant to the discussion? I can see your argument to an extent, but I would make a similar argument related to Epstein himself. How does what happened in Boston apply to the Cubs? Bottom line, the Cubs have a history of off-seasons like this. They have signed a bunch of fringe guys and overpaid for a few decent arms. I'm not going to fear any team with Soriano likely hitting in the middle of the order and Edwin Jackson as the 1/2 guy in the rotation.
  7. Thankfully, the Cardinals made the offer to Lohse. In and of itself, that will prevent Melvin from pursuing him.
  8. Has a free agent acquisition not named Dawson (who had to basically beg them to sign him) ever panned out for the Cubs? Until that happens, I won't fear them due to a bunch of free agent signings. I can see why they need to spend money to make their fans think that they are trying, but some of these moves look penny-wise pound-foolish to me. I don't see an impact player in the bunch. Maybe if everything breaks their way, they can win 75-80 games or so, but that's hardly something to be feared. The pitching might be OK, but the lineup has tons of holes.
  9. What is the deal here? These teams are spending money like the guys at a fantasy auction who have $47 left to spend for two roster spots and just want to leave. Why trade Choo and then do this?
  10. I posted in another thread that they are already basically undergoing a half rebuild. They are spending very little money on the pitching staff right now, and the young guys are getting a shot. The good thing is that if these young arms can come through a bit as they did late in the season and the offense comes somewhere close to last year, this team could be OK. To more specifically answer your question, I'd say no. I'm not in favor of breaking up the offensive core at this point.
  11. What am I missing here? This one doesn't appear to make sense at several levels.
  12. I'll never understand the Pirates. When they were going good last year, their bullpen was the strength of the team. They've been blowing it up ever since. I've got to think that this one is a money move.
  13. Personally, I wouldn't take him back at the league minimum, so I'm glad that the Brewers made no effort to retain him. From what I remember, they were trying to dump Veras, KRod, Loe, etc. and there were no takers. That and the fact that he's been on like 6 teams in 6 years would lead me to believe that his value on the open market is not very high.
  14. I'm actually seeing some Dale Davis in Sanders. I'll take that- or something close, every day.
  15. This is not a team that you do a full-scale rebuild on. Frankly, they already are in the middle of rebuilding the pitching staff. I agree with the others who feel that this team is going to go as far as their young pitching takes them. In my view, there are already enough pitching prospects in the hopper, so why break up that offense to add a few positional player prospects?
  16. I'd agree that from the Astros point of view, this may not be a bad signing. At that deal they really have nothing to lose (except for games). That said, I wish them luck if he starts the season as their closer. He may have posted the softest sub 4-ERA that I've ever seen last year.
  17. I'm happy to admit that it looks like I was wrong on Sanders. He looks like a completely different guy out there this year and is developing a bit of a mean streak.
  18. Veras was horrible to watch... couldn't throw strikes. He was decent during the hot stretch, but he already had worn out his welcome to me at that point. Good riddance.
  19. I'm repeating myself from back when we were debating trading Greinke to Texas, but I don't get the love for Martin Perez. Yes, he's young, but what exactly has he accomplished to achieve his status? He doesn't even have the type of stuff that would profile him as a top of the rotation guy, plus he's had control issues. What am I missing here? No way would I trade Hart for him unless we are talking a deadline deal with the Brewers out of the race.
  20. Though I'm generally cynical about both prospects and old pitchers, this appears to be one of those deals that may benefit both teams. The Mets get some promising young guys and the Blue Jays get the reigning Cy Young winner on a relatively cheap deal.
  21. I don't see the point in trading a key cog in the lineup like Hart. Of course I want to 'win now'. The bottom line is that Hart won't bring as much as the pitching has on the trade market. You aren't going to get a front line pitching prospect, so what do you get, some second line prospect(s) or a position player prospect? Frankly, I think that the Brewers have enough good but not great pitching prospects at this point, and I also don't see a position of true organizational need either, so why weaken the lineup? I could maybe see the salary clearing to get someone else angle, but who is there that won't come with an insane price tag?
  22. I know that Narveson is on target, but I don't count on him to be back to his previous form. Shoulder injuries are particularly nasty and one setback will mean a big chunk of time. The more that I think about Saunders, the more that I like it. I don't think that a two year deal in the $15-18 million total range would be out of line, and he just may bite. He's probably a 3 or 4 on this team, but has a decent track record pitching for winning teams.
  23. I still think that we are going to see a makeover in the bullpen. Melvin is just not biting on multi-year eight figure deals for the likes of Mike Adams. There are plenty of guys out there who will end up available on one year.
  24. There are plenty of guys I'd have interest in on the list above. One guy that you aren't hearing much about is Joe Saunders. He's nothing to get excited about, but he could definitely fill the Suppan/Wolf vet-innings eater type role and might be gettable for a reasonable two year deal. I'd also take a look at one of the risky options like Liriano, Chris Young, Harden or even Jon Sanchez. I think the Brewers need to sign two guys (even if they are taking a flyer) to add to the mix of 6 starters that they have right now.
  25. I'd rather them do nothing then attempt to match some of these absurd deals people have been doling out. Off hand, the only free agent contract given out this season that I'd have done would have been McCarthy... and that would be a major risk. Let the big spenders fill out their rosters and then scavenge on guys who have fallen through the cracks. I think that I can live with 'missing out' on players like the Dempsters, Burnetst, etc. of the world.
