  1. Call me crazy, but I don't mind an Imo's pie- well saltine- I guess, when I'm down that way. I actually even get the occasional craving for one. They are definitely an acquired taste though. I do draw the line at Budweiser, however.
  2. Beside age, and ability to switch hit, this guy looks to be pretty similar to Profar in the stat lines. What is the major drop off there? I'm glad two pitchers are coming back as well, but I don't like the fact that neither seems to be able to throw strikes. Bottom line, I'm glad that they didn't settle for the Rangers' garbage again. Even happier that they sent him to their big rival. Hopefully Greinke pitches the deciding game against them in the playoffs and shuts them down. I wasn't sold on Olt anyway, so I'd rather roll the dice on a SS.
  3. I think people over-estimate what type of team it takes to be competitive. No offense, but did you miss the 90's? Look at that projected pitching staff for next season, along with the potential free agent targets. Maybe I'm jaded by all the failed prospects in the past, but I think that people tend to overestimate the effect of young pitching here. You do not win without solid pitching, and I'm just not seeing it for the next few years.
  4. As I said, no way Greinke comes back after he's traded. If word on the street is true (and Greinke confirmed as much), the Brewers made a pretty fair offer- likely north of 9 figures. So he walked from that offer, and opened himself up to be a rental arm.... rental arms are often abused a bit, especially in the playoffs. The guy is taking a huge risk, and I don't think that he's doing so as part of a plan to 'help the Brewers get some young talent'. As we stand right now, the guy will probably be the most coveted free agent of the off-season. It follows that he's going to reap a huge payday.... unless he hurts himself down the stretch.
  5. I think you are pushing your feelings off on the team. Bad teams are always accused of quitting/playing without energy. We saw the same thing earlier this year when the team was really bad. I am sure we will see some posts about it in the next week as trades are made. I really haven't gotten the impression that these guys are mailing it in this year. After the past week, I almost wouldn't blame them if they started to though.
  6. One thing with Yo is that he seems to often be victimized by one big inning. He may give up 4 runs in an inning and then string together three starts where he only gives up 4 runs total. Even in his bad games, it seems like he either starts bad and then straightens things out, or he is cruising along and then gives up a walk and a couple of bombs. It almost seems like he has more innings when he surrenders a crooked number (3 or more) than he does where he only allows a single run. Kind of odd, but all told, the number of scoreless innings that he has are enough for me.
  7. Greinke is easy for me to spell because my last name also breaks the "I before E except after C" rule. I was going to coin a new spelling rule, "I before E, except after C and in the last names of starting pitchers", then I started typing Feirs all the time....
  8. I've got to think that K-Rod is going to be Melvin's sacrificial lamb in a few weeks if no one is foolish enough to trade for him. I think that he's going to get the Billy Hall treatment, without the free trip to Nashville.
  9. I think that I can spell Greinke at least three different ways in the same post. 'I before E' my foot.
  10. Remember that foolish rumor that someone started that C.C. opted out of his Yankees deal because he wanted to return to the Brewers? Well, I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but I'd say that the odds that Greinke is traded and then returns via free agency are about the same those were. Think about it, the man walked away from 9 figures guaranteed.... left it on the table. Honestly, if he 'loves' Milwaukee that much, why would he do that? Solely for the opportunity to be a member of one of ten teams in the playoffs this year? If so, his desire to win is likely greater than anyone in baseball history (except for maybe Pete Rose with 50 grand on the game). I say that he's either: 1.) not as keen on Milwaukee as people are saying and/or 2.) he and his agent believe that he's going to hit the mother lode in about four or five months. If either of those two things are true, the Brewers have no shot.
  11. Yes. For whatever reason, Melvin was fixated on Macha though. Sveum should have certainly gotten a better opportunity after 2010 as well. I'm guessing that the front office perceived him as being too cozy with the players to be a full time manager. In that respect Sveum was a lot like Harvey Kuenn (though Kuenn also had the health issues).
  12. Macha's teams actually played a combined 2 games over .500 in August and September. So, I don't think you can really say his teams quit. I don't think that the whole story can be told in the won loss record. Macha's teams seemed to lose interest pretty early in the season- his first year shortly after Weeks broke his hand, and his second year during and after the long losing streak (early June?). More specifically, I never saw worse body language in a team than I did in the second half of 2010. Watching that team, it was quite apparent that there was not a crap to be given anywhere on the field, in the dugout or in the clubhouse. It was like watching a 3-12 NFL team playing the 3rd string QB in week 17 with everyone lollygagging to the huddle and standing with their hands on their hips. Back to W/L record, during Nedly's dreadful 2nd half collapses, you at least got the feeling that the team was still trying, trying too hard perhaps, but at least trying.
  13. I miss Phil Garner Absolutely. In my view, (criticisms related to Eldred aside) Garner was the best manager that this team has had in the past 20 years. People make excuses for Macha regarding the starting pitching. They should look at some of the staffs that Scrap Iron had to deal with.... one year, his Opening Day starter was Rafael Roque. Garner's teams usually played way over their heads until at least mid-summer, when key injuries set in and/or their out manned pitching completely fell apart. They never quit like Macha's teams did.
  14. I'd definitely look at it, but think that it's highly doubtful to happen. Gallardo is a solid top of the rotation guy, but I don't think that he's a true ace like Sheets was or Greinke is. He's very dependent on how well his curve is working in any particular game. If he's on, he's a stud, if not he's usually not that great. I guess that I'm a bit more cynical than the average fan when it comes to the prospects for 2013 and 2014. Bottom line, if the team is not competing then, in 2015, either Gallardo has been very good and the Brewers are in another pending free agent pickle, or he's been ineffective and/or hurt and his contract is looking bad, not to mention that he will be three years older.
  15. Push comes to shove, I'd rather take a chance on Teheran than someone with in my view low upside like Delgado. Admittedly, I've seen very little of Teheran, but supposedly he has 'ace' stuff and looks to have good control of it. Word on the street is that perhaps part of the reason that he is struggling this season is that he's been adding a pitch to his repertoire (slider?). I'm not a huge fan of slightly built pitchers, but that wouldn't scare me off. My major concern would be the diminished K-rate since he moved up a level, I'd have to leave it up to the scouts to pinpoint the reasons for that.
  16. Wouldn't touch Santana with a 10 foot pole.. I'm not too big a fan of Richards, because he has problems throwing strikes... but if they added Walden to the mix (though he's hurt right now), I might bite on Richards/Walden.... I'd even give them their choice of non Axford relievers to even things up.
  17. I might have to pick up Livian in fantasy. He can't be worse than the others. Maybe he will do a '97 Doug Jones impersonation and start blowing guys away with his 85 MPH cheese.
  18. Well, if the Andrus trade somehow does happen, that makes the original deal with K.C. look a lot better. I see Escobar to be a Andrus type player, best case. Giving up Cain, Jeffries, Ozorizzi and 1.5 years of a SS for what they got from Greinke looks pretty good unless Odorizzi develops into a bonafide top of the rotation guy.
  19. OK, so the Rangers are hesitant to part with Olt, but they are in for moving their All-Star shortstop down the stretch of a pennant race. I'm not buying what that blog is selling.
  20. I really don't think that the Brewers should be focused on financial flexibility moving forward. If you get a legit offer of prospects for Ramirez, maybe you move him, but I really don't want to see him traded so the Brewers have more money to overpay someone like Ryan Dempster or Kyle Lohse in the off-season, and the positional free agents are very underwhelming to say the least.
  21. Why would anyone who's watched him play want Peter Bourjos? He's a poor man's Carlos Gomez (fast, good glove but can't hit), though I guarantee if given a year of full time play, he could lead the league in 1-3 grounders. Not sure how he has much value, though it's obvious why the Angels keep dangling him in deals.
  22. Don't take the wrong exit when you cross the river... and if you do, roll 'em up.
  23. Good. I really don't understand the fanlove for Kottaras. He is poor defensively, and despite what many claim, has not been a 'power LH bench bat' this season. As I've posted on other threads, has he gotten a hit since mid April? Admittedly hyperbole, but he's been bad at the plate. As for Maldonado, I'd expect that he will still get at least 2 starts a week, probably more in the beginning. Let the kid stay in the bigs, he's proven that he deserves to be there.
  24. I believe that this was the clown who had the lead article on cbssports.com last night, something to the effect that 'Greinke deserves better'. Yes, a 5 year contract offer in excess of 100 million- life is so unfair. As for this report- well, duh.
  25. This team needs a bullpen transplant before I'm even going to think about getting my undies in a bunch over the manager.
