  1. I'm going to start calling Soup the 'Trojan Horse'. Attanasio, Melvin, etc. fell hook, line and sinker for LaRussa's evil plan to sabotage the Brewers' Central hopes. This would make a good movie.
  2. I don't disagree, but I also don't think that's mutually exclusive to saying Epstein did a good job as GM there. Point taken, but there is a big difference in taking over a 90 win team with stars in their primes as opposed to taking over a 90 loss team saddled with lots of dead money. In my view, the Cubs have Castro, Garza and a handful of OK players. It's going to be a major rebuild.
  3. Now, I'm tempted to go down there and toss a hot dog at Suppan while he is on 'the green'. After further consideration, I decided that the fast ejection and fleeting notoriety wouldn't be worth it.
  4. He said the Cardinals are going for their '3rd World Series' since '82. Probably semantics and he was meaning championships, but according to my count they are 'going for their fifth World Series'. Typical of the 'smartest fans in baseball'.
  5. Yes, but the Red Sox had Pedro, Manny and Nomar and more in place. They were a good team from the get go. They also had stacks of monopoly money for Theo to play with. The Cubs have Cra-Z and Soriano. MLB also has steroid testing now. In my view, the Cubs should have bought out Aramis and used the money to lure Terry Ryan, because at this point they need someone with his philosophy. I'm glad they are taking this route though.
  6. What are the heavy majority of trades, and what would you want a win-now GM to do? Look at the rosters for the championship teams. Most of those guys were not Red Sox draftees. They were either bought or traded for. Epstein added a good of pieces, trading prospects for guys like Schilling, etc. He just got very lucky that most of the guys he traded busted out elsewhere. As pointed out above, most of his free agent acquisitions have been brutal, but that's easy to overlook when you have monopoly money to spend. Here's hoping he takes the same plan with the Cubs. The last wunderkind GM with two rings that they snatched up (McPhail) pretty much fell flat on his face.
  7. The heavy majority of trades that he made in Boston, especially early on, involved trading prospects for veterans. He got pretty lucky in that outside of Hanley, none of them really came back to bite him. I'm also assuming that he's going to pillage the system because the Cubs have a ton of bad contracts for the next few years. They won't be able to spend as freely to overpay on the free agent market, so they'll have to trade for guys.
  8. Why does it have to be Narveson? I'd actually prefer to use Estrada to start (obviously with a quick hook). He tends to throw strikes. Despite not being 'stretched out', his arm isn't going to fall off if he throws three innings.
  9. Good. Can't wait for him to pillage the farm system and blow his initial allotment of monopoly money on whoever is the 'best free agent available'. Maybe he will get lucky and some guys will 'Hulk up' for him like Ortiz and Manny. Is Mr. Minitab going to bring Bill James with him? That would help him keep his street cred.
  10. I think the Brewers should run out Don Denkinger to throw out the first pitch on Sunday. On a related note, I was looking for a cheap used Suppan t-shirt jersey to burn at my tailgate, but I'm unable to find one. Apparently they never sold any. Do bobble heads melt?
  11. Over the past several years, I've grown to hate the Cardinals more than the Cubs, that's for sure. Part of me has a soft spot for the Cubs because they were my N.L. team back in the late 70's early 80's when we got WGN on cable. There are a lot of obnoxious Cub fans around here for sure, but the Cardinal organization itself is obnoxious.
  12. Does this strike anyone else as hilarious? Bob Gibson? Red Schoendienst? Anyone else? I mean Soup is an odd choice, if you ask me. Exactly. Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Steve Carlton even Willie McGee off the top of my head. I guess they are celebrating the 5 year anniversary of the 2006 season because Edmonds is going tomorrow. I love how they are celebrating a moment that basically fleeced the Brewer brass into giving a guy double what he was worth. More gamesmanship on the part of the Cardinals. I guess they screwed the Brewers players on their seating as well. These guys are pulling out all the stops because they know that they have an inferior team.
  13. Don't know where my text went on the original post but this takes some gall if you ask me. The Brewers paid the guy millions this year to sit home then he pours salt in the wound by donning the Cardinal Red to throw out the first pitch against you in the NLCS. He should be thanking the Brewers for giving him double what the Cardinals (or anyone else for that matter would have). Soup is starting to challenge Sheffield as the worst Brewer ever in my view. Hopefully Carpenter shakes his hand before the game and gets some of the fail and ineptitude on his throwing hand. Can't wash that off.
  14. He's in. First ballot. Easily. See Sandy Koufax for the simplest comparison. I prefer to make the Manny Ramirez comparison. Fingers crossed that he gets caught before he retires.
  15. I like Butler, but I'm not sure he would be much better than Gamel in the long term. Plus, I'm not sure I want another RH hitter in the lineup. The money would be the big issue as well as creating a hole in the rotation. Gordon would be very intriguing though as a LH bat who could theoretically fill one of three spots and seems to have put it together this year. I wonder if Marcum plus a prospect (is there any position the Royals aren't stacked) may make them think a little. Gordon will start getting expensive pretty soon. Looking at the Royals, it's obvious that they need some veteran pitching. If they get some, with that offensive potential, they may be able to contend next year in that crappy division.
  16. I suggested before a deal with KC for Billy Butler or Alex Gordon. Obviously, the Gordon deal would be highly unlikely at this point, and Butler would be decent though probably not enough return for Marcum alone.
  17. I don't know about that. The Cardinals whiffed 10 times on Sunday, and that game would have never really been in doubt had Berkman beat the shift with a slow grounder and Freese followed with a very borderline home run. I wouldn't have expected many strikeouts from the guys who went last night for the Brewers.
  18. Obviously the Brewers did an abhorrent job of pitching to Pujols last night and he made them pay. I keep hearing the book on pitching to him is to go inside, and I can see that to a point (namely a high and tight pitch to make him think about standing on the plate) but it's very easy to make a mistake going inside and leave the ball in his wheelhouse. Some of the pitches that he got last night were inexcusable. From what I've seen, Pujols should get a steady diet of low and outside stuff. He seems to get a little impatient and can be caught with an off balance swing trying to pull this stuff. He's hit into a ton of double plays this year. Bottom line, hopefully they can do a better job of keeping guys off the bases ahead of him (has he come to the plate without a guy on base yet?), but if they fall behind on him 2-0 or 3-1, I think it's best to just put him on. Let Berkman and Holliday beat you.
  19. One thing people are overlooking is that neither of the St. Louis starters have made it out of the fifth either. Think that shady bullpen will be a little taxed by Thursday? It's not like the Crew has Suppan, Looper, Parra as the scheduled starters for the next three games. If they can beat Ian Kennedy twice, I think they can get Carpenter. Neither Lohse or Garcia inspire any fear in me whatsoever.
  20. Reading some of last night's IGT was incredibly depressing. You would think the series was over after last night. I don't know if the blowout caused this or the fact that people are putting way too much stake in home field advantage. Do people really think it's likely the Brewers will get swept in St. Louis? All that it will take is one win down there to 'regain home field'- which I don't think is that huge of a deal in baseball. Going fuirther, did I miss something and Carpenter is now unhittable or something? The guy is right at 250 innings pitched this year, and the Brewers always have hit him pretty well. I don't fear Lohse or Garcia either. Maybe I'm reaching here, but if the Brewers can avoid putting guys on base for Pujols and then serving up fat pitches right down the middle, I think they take two of three. Outside of Freese no one else in that lineup has really done too much except for some mostly weak base hits and walks.
  21. I'd love to go back to the American League since I grew up with it, but it will never happen because Selig thinks that Milwaukee is an 'N.L. town', whatever that means.
  22. I actually think I'd prefer to see Estrada out there for the first 3 innings (ideally) and then Narveson. The thing I like about Estrada is that he usually throws a lot of strikes. I'd go with this mishmash in Game 5 if the Brewers are able to win tomorrow or Thursday. Busch is more of a pitcher's park, so I'd give these guys a better chance of success there. I'd save Greinke and Gallardo for home under those circumstances.
  23. The fact that he has been calling Brewers games for the past few decades shows where his allegiance lies. I'm not doubting that, but he does talk up St. Louis a great deal.
  24. Frankly, Ueck is even kind of a Cardinal backer. You hear more about his time in St. Louis by far than you hear about the rest of his career, even though he only played 3 years or so there.
  25. I think this is what you need to do if the Brewers lose Wednesday, because you have to get Game 4. However, if they can pull out the win Wednesday, I like the Wolf/Lohse matchup fairly well. I still have little confidence in Wolf, but I see Lohse as the weak link in the Cards rotation. I'd give the Brewers at least a fighting chance in that one, even though Wolf has been pitching poorly. I really don't want to see Marcum out there again- he's been Suppan-esque. The bottom line is that the Brewers are going to need to get the bats going. Part of me thinks that being the road team is almost an advantage for the Crew in this series as they get first bats, and also that most of their pitchers are pretty crappy in the first inning, which is further compounded by the fact that this year the Cardinals best offensive inning is- you guessed it- the first. All told, I think people are panicking a tad much and starting to jump ship because the Brewers have been playing from behind in each of the last 5 games. In those games, they've given up runs in the first 4 times- multiple runs 3 times. You can't do that and expect to win on a consistent basis. It's demoralizing and stressful for the fans, so I have to imagine that at least some of that carries over to the players.
