  1. I don't fear Epstein in the least (unless MLB drops steroid testing). Certainly not as much as the LaRussa/Duncan regime in St. Louis.
  2. I'd non-tender both McGehee and Loe if they get anywhere near that amount. I'd actually offer Parra a deal like Cappy got a few years back, if he doesn't take it, good bye. Not sure that Kottaras is worth more than a chance to win the backup job in spring either.
  3. I'd prefer Furcal and Barmes in that order with Hairston and Jack Wilson signed to replace Counsell and Josh Wilson- not sure what will happen at third and first at this point, but that shouldn't preclude the Brewers from signing some bench guys.
  4. Why would the Orioles sign Ramirez when they have Reynolds? Is this guy assuming that Reynolds would move to first? Hopefully this guy is wrong... As I've said, if the Brewers are going to spend $100 million, it had better be on Prince.
  5. The Brewers are AAA for announcers, with WTMJ and FSW calling the shots. I've learned to never get too attached to any of them outside of Ueck. I'm sure BA will be gone soon too.
  6. Not to mention that Reyes is not as good as he's hyped to be. Look at his career stats offensively and defensively. If he played every year like last year (a contract year), he might be worth what he'd get- but he missed a decent chunk of games then as well.
  7. As I said, I see Sizemore as a guy who could play first, in the event that the Brewers brass decides to never give Gamel his chance. Based on upside/age alone, he'd be much better than stopgap 'guys' out there like Derek Lee, Pena etc. That said, I wouldn't jettison Morgan for him. Ideally to me, he'd take the Kotsay role, filling in wherever needed in the OF and 1B. I'd give him a shot at 3-4 million plus incentives, but my guess is that there are plenty of teams that have a full time spot for him and would jump at the chance to get a 'name' relatively cheap.
  8. As overrated as I think that he has been, I tend to agree with this. Perhaps if the team doesn't go with Gamel, he could play first. That would certainly reduce the strain on his legs. He's never been a very good outfielder, and doesn't have much of an arm at all. I still think that Gamel would be a better option however, due to Sizemore's recent history of low batting averages and relative lack of power. Ideally, he could take Kotsay's role as the LH/4th outfielder bench guy, though it's doubtful he'd go anywhere without a full time role. All this is probably moot though. Some team will probably give him decent money based on his name alone. This reeks of the sort of signing that the Pirates have been making over the past several years.
  9. The thing with BA and 'Betancore' was noticeable to me as well. It didn't really annoy me, but he took to pronouncing the name like the newscasters that they lampoon who say Spanish words in a overdone way. It was kind of like Bet.an........coooore.
  10. Nice move for the Braves to actually get a player and $5 million back out of that horrible contract. Addition by subtraction.
  11. I'm actually pretty surprised that he did this just short of John McGraw in wins. McGraw is second in all-time wins, but that is the mark that managers are going for because Connie Mack was number one, mostly due to the fact that he owned the team.
  12. 'Red Sox Nation' would absolutely revolt if this happened. From what I have heard, Sveum is pretty much universally detested there after his stint as third base coach.
  13. This was a foregone conclusion. I wouldn't write Yuni off just yet- my guess is that he could be had for a couple of million at the most.
  14. To me, you are set with Morgan/Gomez. Why mess with something that isn't broken when you have serious question marks at three other positions?
  15. I don't want prospects for Marcum at this point. As I said before, the Royals have a plethora of 1B/corner outfielders. Billy Butler makes a lot of sense for them, but he's not enough for me. I'd try to work something for Gordon, but I doubt the Royals would even think about that.
  16. I don't see the need for Sizemore. Would he play first base or what? It seems that he's pretty much done. I may throw him a few million on a one year deal trying to catch lightning in a jar, but you'd have to be certifiable to give him anywhere near a big contract.
  17. Carlos Pena isn't worth $10 million to me, and I don't think that he was worth that to the Cubs last year either. All the times the Brewers played the Cubs, I never really thought he posed much of a threat- looking at the stats, he had 1 RBI in 51 at bats against the Brewers- pathetic. Only 28 homers in a hitter's park, tons of whiffs and hit .239- plus he's old. Not the kind of guy that I want to give 10 million to in the hopes of replacing Fielder. If you want to give eight figures to an aging power hitter from Chicago, I'd grudgingly prefer it be Ramirez....at least with him, you could project him to add 10-15 homers to the lineup to help make up for the loss of power at third.
  18. Being from NY, I hope that he's using 'Yankee money' (monopoly money) to come up with these figures. If the Brewers give Pena and Barmes $15 million over the next two years, my head will explode. Don't get me wrong, I like Barmes, but I was thinking 2 years/$6-7 million. I wouldn't give Pena $10 million for 2 years, let alone one.
  19. In the end, despite what the pundits say, that ball should have been caught. We are going to be hearing Bill Buckner's name a lot over the next few weeks. In my opinion, Cruz's misplay was 'worse' than Buckner's. Bottom line, either LaRussa sold his soul to the devil or someone had a lucky horseshoe in the Pujols. The Cardinals have just capped the most incredible long term stretch of luck that I've ever seen. What has it been, eight weeks?
  20. Looked like alligator arms to me. I have to say the Cardinals have been getting very lucky on balls hit to right this postseason.
  21. Milwaukee just does not care about the Bucks or the NBA. It's only a matter of time before they're relocated. I find this really sad, because when the Packers and Badgers were sucking for most of the 70's and 80's, the Bucks were really the only thing worth watching in the winter. However, my guess is that outside of a few markets (Salt Lake City, Portland, Miami, LA, etc.) you'd probably get somewhere around the same polling results to this question. I've found that people tend to be pretty vocally apathetic about the NBA.
  22. Though I've wavered a bit, I keep coming to the the conclusion that it's a pretty simple equation here: Gamel + many millions > most of the realistic acquisition targets I'd rather use the surplus money to shore up the left side of the infield & bench/ resign the bullpen arms than sign a 'guy' based on what he has done or his potential. I honestly can't see Gamel's starting at first single-handedly pulling down Brewer contention hopes. If Gamel isn't pulling his load midseason, and the team is in contention, that's when you go out and try to get a bat in my view. Maybe Melvin will pull another rabbit out of his hat and surprise us with a big bat at 1b, but at this point, I think you have to give Gamel his shot once and for all.
  23. Guys have been lying about their ages since forever. Simply put, younger guys get a longer look from the scouts, and in turn have a higher earning potential. The focus is obviously on the Latin American countries these days because I would guess that everyone would look with a jaded eye at any 'big kid' these days since that Almonte in the LLWS. Since the Patriot Act, lots of these guys have been getting caught due to exit/entry the country. Not sure that would apply to Pujols. However, since he's now a U.S. citizen you have to give him benefit of the doubt, you'd assume he'd have had to provide a ton of documentation. Still fun to speculate, because I can't stand the guy.
  24. He's from the DR though. There is quite a bit of age fudging going on down there for sure.
  25. Call me a tin-foil hat guy, but I'm not convinced that Pujols really is 31.
