  1. Always have liked Berkman. I wish that he would have tested the market this winter instead of resigning with St. Louis- I bet that his agent agrees.
  2. Sabean hasn't really made that many bad moves. He's lucky that both Liriano and Nathan blew their arms out. That was looking like one of the all-time stinkers for awhile.
  3. What doesn't make sense to me is that DRH had an option remaining. Why didn't Cincy just send him to AAA? After watching DRH pitch, I suspect that he was a trojan horse planted while Cincy still had hopes of winning the division.
  4. I think that Gamel has been a victim of bad timing/luck and his perceived 'issues'. McGehee came from nowhere and blocked him, he was Machaed, injuries, etc. I don't think his exile to AAA is solely due to his talent- offensively at least. I compare this situation somewhat to Gorman Thomas, who really didn't get an opportunity to play every day until he was (coincidentally) 27. They seem to be on fairly similar career paths- hype, early struggles, friction with managers, exile to minors, 'issues', etc. Gorman was even traded away as part of an under the table agreement with Texas to keep him in the organization after he was out of options and Dalton/Bamberger decided to give him a shot.
  5. Markakis would be a nice fit if you moved Hart, but he makes way too much money. I can't believe the O's gave him that kind of contract.
  6. I'd pass on Cuddyer at anywhere near the rate he made in 2011. My Twins fans friends are pretty much unanimous that they don't want him resigned because he's looking for a multi-year deal paying eight figures per. They don't think he has much left in the tank. I'd rather go with Gamel for a small fraction of the cost.
  7. I have to take this opportunity to again post my opinion that Grady Sizemore is one of the most overrated players of his generation. Now he has a history of microfracture issues with his leg and hasn't done anything for three years. Pass.
  8. I think that trading Axford would be foolhardy, even if you subscribe to the school of thought that closers are overrated. He's young, under control and most importantly cheap for the next few years. The only way that I'd even think about trading him would be for a young all-star bat at a position of need. That said, any team looking to add a closer has got to be on the fringes of competing. Quite unlikely a team like that would give up a good bat for a reliever. On the other hand most teams that dump closers tend to do so for prospects because they are rebuilding. In my view, the difference between bullpens was pretty much the primary reason that the Brewers won the division over the Cardinals this season. Brewers fans should be sending Coco thank you notes for his greed, because had he not went for the extra couple million, the Brewers would have been paying him 25 times as much to do a worse job closing. K-Rod is gone, along with possibly both Saito/Hawkins. Doesn't make sense for me to completely overhaul the primary strength of the team when the free agent defections alone will be enough to overcome.
  9. Regardless of his ethnic background or religious beliefs, I think that it's safe to say that Crap is a d-bag.
  10. Lidge will probably get an opportunity to close somewhere , not even considering the fact that he's lost a ton of velocity. I'd rather just go after Saito and possibly Hawkins depending on cost. As for Oswalt and Reyes, too rich for my blood.
  11. I agree with you that the calls for OBP are probably overdone at times, but guys with both "OBP skills" and power get big contracts and are hard to find. We're losing one of the best OBP/power guys in the league this offseason when someone offers Prince a mammoth contract. Sometime teams without a Yankee-caliber payroll have to settle with lesser players, and if a player only had one skill, OBP would be a decent one to have. Going into next season, we have Weeks, Braun and Hart who would make up a decent 3-4-5 next year, with a good OBP guy in Morgan batting 1 or 2. I'd like to see us add another OBP guy to bat 1 or 2. That said, I certainly wouldn't offer Fukudome 3 years / $24MM. First, that would take a better player (Hart) off the team. Second, he's not worth it. I'd rather the other "OBP guy" be a shortstop. Otherwise, we're going to have to stick with Hart or Weeks at #1, and hope Gamel or Green can hit well enough to man the #5 hole, or I guess we could move Lucroy to #2. I see your point, but I'd actually be willing to lay money that Gamel would have a higher OBP than Fukudome if both were given a full season in 2012. I'd definitely bet a good sum that Gamel would have a higher slugging percentage. As for Hart, I'd do the same, except I'd bet the farm that he will outslug Fukudome. If Fukudome played SS, we may be onto something, but not as a corner outfielder in my view.
  12. Will the Red Sox really go after Reyes after signing Crawford last year? Well, they've made the worst signings the past two off-seasons, so why not go for the threepeat? On the other hand, Boy Wonder is gone, so maybe not.
  13. I thought the Giants were petitioning the league for a rule to allow Posey to wear a red jersey while he's catching. This way Posey won't get touched again... have to protect the stars.
  14. Probably mentioned above, but I saw somewhere 'within 10 days after postseason ends'. Just another reason to cheer for Texas to close this out.
  15. Of course power is good. Do you find anyone arguing against having power? Those who are defending Fukudome's "OBP skills" are in a roundabout way.
  16. Which two teams do you think will be competing for Reyes so heavily that he will get that much money? The Mets and whoever is foolish enough to get into a bidding war with them. I've got a gut feeling that Reyes is going to be listed on the 'Worst Free Agent Signings' lists in 3-4 years.
  17. Don't want to speak for him, but I think he likes Rickie.
  18. Point taken, but it took the league a few years to figure out Billy Hall as well. Hart looked pretty brutal for most of '09 as well when he couldn't lay off a slider to save his life. It seems when some of these guys have success, they turn into guess hitters or something.
  19. I think the book was just out on him this year- namely, throw him low and outside junk or eye high stuff the first few pitches, and then freeze him on something right down the pipe for strike three. I'd be willing to take a chance on a rebound next season if the arby number isn't too much higher than a million. He seemed to go on the Ronnie Belliard diet last season as well, perhaps an off-season of conditioning would help him bounce back a bit.
  20. I've heard people booing Paul Molitor and even Billy Spiers (heck, he even got attacked on the field in County), so I'm sure Prince will get booed by some no matter where he goes.
  21. Obviously, both of these guys have seen better days. I'd be intrigued by Oswalt if the Brewers weren't solid in SP. He would seem to have Texas or Atlanta written all over him if he decides to keep playing. I'll pass on Lidge
  22. Because I'm from the past. Except in extreme cases (Jose K), I am generally predisposed to prefer hitters with 'pop'. From what I've seen in many years of watching baseball, it's very tough to win without decent power in your lineup- especially in the traditional 'power positions' (first, corner OF). If you don't have that, you had better steal a ton of bases and have good pitching with some solid glovework too(see the 80's Cardinals teams and even the '92 Brewers). Bottom line, it generally takes a combination of 3 or even 4 walks/singles to score a run. I know that my beliefs fly in the face of modern statistical thinking, but I'm pretty set in my ways. I've argued this extensively in the posts earlier this year where we were debating the merits of Counsell/Jamey Carroll.
  23. One issue that I do have with Wolf -depending on the projected payroll for '11- revolves around the question of whether it's really worthwhile to spend $10 million on a 4th starter? Especially considering the many positions of need and payroll limitations. I do understand that the team was extremely lucky with starter health last season and such, and I'm not suggesting that Wolf is a salary dump type guy, but perhaps you could get something of value for him while giving the team more payroll flexibility. I guess I'd rather skimp on a 4th starter than 2-3 spots in the starting lineup/bullpen.
  24. Because Fukudome brings nothing else to the table. His career slugging percentage is less than .400. His career batting average is .260. Even if he is a significant defensive upgrade over Hart, that is canceled out by a significant offensive downgrade. Not to mention the fact that he's older and it's likely that his defense and arm will see a decline. I believe that outfielders like Fukudome and DeJesus are highly overrated by the OBP enthusiasts, especially when they are too old to play center. I'm of the school that you need some power from your corner outfielders. As a backup, I could see a role for a guy like Fukudome, but I think it would be foolish to trade Hart and give up on Gamel while giving him extensive playing time- especially with the pending loss of Fielder. Bottom line, rightly or wrongly, I'm never going to agree with the sabermetric guys on the intrinsic value of a walk, no matter what the statistical models/studies say.
  25. I'm not going to argue this again extensively... but as he gets even older, and his batting average drops, his OBP will as well, unless he gets 'better' at drawing walks. I don't buy into the OBP fascination, especially when the guy as a low batting average and/or little power. Fukudome is an extreme case, because his career batting average is putrid for an outfielder who has shown little power with a corresponding low slugging percentage. As I've said, since he's OK defensively, he wouldn't be a bad 5th outfielder, but that's about all he is.
