  1. If Braun does play in the majors this year, I wonder if he'll have more homers or errors? That would be an interesting media watch, right there.
  2. Regarding Kris Benson, I'm curious as to how the Cardinals didn't know about his shoulder injury. I'm not a Cardinals fan (heaven forbid!), but how does a supposedly solid organization like St. Louis NOT have this guy checked out, before guaranteeing him $7M+ this year?
  3. Nope, no way, no how. $$$$ talks, and it's talking way too loud for just about any potential suitor(s). The Rockies made a bad deal, and they're going to be stuck with it. The Brewers know how that goes, all too well.
  4. "I believe it goes something like this. There's no such thing as a stupid iquestion just stupid people.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Thanks very much, trw! Ok, so $16+ won't do it then. 4/70 might ($17.5/yr) might, but he likes Texas that much, more power to him!!!! T Thank you very much , trw!!!? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif And I suppose 4/70 won't do it either, but still, he could still surf on Lake Michigan between starts! What's there in Texas?
  5. Obviously, this is a stupid question, but what the hell, there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers, or something like that... If the Brewers are willing to put out (theoretically) 4/$40M for the Soup Can, is Zito worth the 4/$65 or whatever he's looking for, and would the Brew Crew be better off going in that direction? I'm not up on Zito, he probably doesn't want to be in a hick town like MKE, anyway, but just throwing it out there. Is Suppan a better value than Zito, all other things being equal? (I live in MKE, I think it's great, but for a "west coaster" like Zito, he might view it as a hick town.)
  6. I suppose the argument regarding defense is very valid. One could look at Carlos Lee, and wonder whether 35/100 is enough to make the team that much closer to a winning team, despite his lackluster defensive play. However, being a LF, how many runs does he cost,?
  7. I thiink I agree with some of you that feel paying $40M+ for a pitcher who may be only marginally better than Carlos Villanueva (and that might be debatable) is silly, whether you're the Yankees or the Brewers. Just to get somebody to make a statement doens't make any sense whasoever. I could see (somewhat) paying some big bucks on Schmidt, and the Brewers did throw their hat in the ring for him, but Suppan? No.
  8. One man's 4+ ERA isn't the same as another man's, depending on the "standard deviation"? I'm not statistician, but when people start throwing out various averages, I sometimes wonder what's better? IA guy who's generally giving up 4+ runs a game, or somebody who gives up 12 one game, and throws shutouts the next two? Not there's anybody that's that extreme, and maybe this should be another thread, but just wondering which is better overall? To me, it wothe second example, but hey, that's just me...
  9. I find this interesting, in light of recent history. I mean, people want the Brewers to go sign some free agents, but don't want to pay the truly big bucks for those who might actually have a thought regarding the city. At the same time, it's exceedingly hard to find anybody that actually wants to be here. So, why bother?
  10. Well, I think I can relax now. The Brewers won't be doing much at the moment. I do believe I remember DM mentioning once that sometimes, while the actual trade isn't made during the Winter Meetings, the groundwork for one is laid during this time, and the actual trade could be culminated later. We'll see. And here I was hoping for some good sports news this week, especially after the Packers debacle. Sigh...
  11. I'm naive, and believe in the Easter Bunny (Santa Claus I'm a bit unsure about!). C'mon Mark. DO IT!!!! Let's make a statement!!! PLUS, we don't have to give up anybody to get him. It's only money! Let's give this town something to really talk about!!!!!!!!!! Uh-oh. Somebody just told me the Easter Bunny does not exist. Darn....
  12. As you say, the Rays would NOT give up one of their talented pitchers, especially when they're trying to acquire more of that commodity.
  13. I'm all for it, but didn't realize Penny was even remotely available to anybody. If he is, I'm sure the Dodgers will want a boatload in return, which I don't believe the Brewers have or could afford.
  14. Why bother with Lieber at all, other than to get rid of an excess player? Unless there are some serious questions regarding Ohka, I believe he'd be worth just as much as Lieber, and we know who he is, and that he fits well here. Plus he's younger and, at this point, quite a bit cheaper, unless the Phils pick up a big chunk of Lieber's salary. This trade doesn't really make us any better, just gets rid of an OF we don't need. We can always argue about this being some kind of "chess move" that sets up another trade or signing down the road, but as it stands, I guess I'm not thrilled about it at this point.
  15. Guess I must have missed the Jim Bowden comments, since most of you had seen/heard more thatn what's posted here. But I agree. No Manny (is it possible he's worse in LF than Lee?J, and A-Rod (can't have a player making over 1/3 of stated budget!).
  16. Speaking of forgotten center-fielders (well, almost), we really don't know what we have in Laynce Nix, either, who has some of the same qualitiies as Reed, although possibly not a s talented. I haven't seen any Seattle games, nor have I seen very much of Nix to judge either. But I agree, We don't really need Reed, we have one like him already on the roster....JMO!
  17. No way for Milwaukee. First, Sexson didn't want to be here in the first place. Second, he's been injury-prone, I believe. Thirdly, his production has tailed off considerably the last couple of years. And fourth, we already have a first baseman -- granted, Prince isn't as good defensively as Sexson was, but not real liability, either. And firth, the cost is going to be very prohibitive; I doubt if Seattle is really wanting to pick up much of his salary, if they don't have to. Oh, and Seattle is going to want somebody like a Capuano to seal the deal. These are all the thoughts off the top of my head. I'm sure many of the more knowledgeable posters here can add statistics and other reasons to JUST SAY NO (even it fhere was any rumor to this effect).
  18. While I agree you have to give up something to get something in return, I can''t agree with any trade involving BIlly Hall. He might have had just one of those magical years, and will fall back to whatever his "normal" might be. But, at this point, we don't know that, and given how offensively-challenged this team is, giving up offense for pitching doesn't seem to add up. At least to me.
  19. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The only hangups in the Giants' deal must be either $/year or #/years, which means the Brew Crew couldn't afford or wouldn't desire either one.
  20. I don't see the Yankees paying that much of Pavano's salary, just to get a Brady Clark. If Pavano has upside, like some people say, the Yanks, given their pitching woes, are better off keeping him.
  21. I know from a fan's perspective, I never liked seeing Draig Wilson at the plate. The only thing I wonder is, isn't he kind of like Jenkins in a way -- kind of streaky? And if the ESPN rumor has ANY validity, it would appear his services are ins some demand. That would leave the local team out of it.
  22. Which is one reason I'd like to have Graffy on this team, as Doug Melvin does, too (reportedly). Prince was a rookie, maybe wasn't listening to anybody regarding whose ball it was, and Tony G let him know. A little fire like that, on a team of "nice" guys, has to be a positive attribute. Tony G's been around the block a couple of times, and I'd think he'd be a positive influence. Which is not to say that Mark L. wouldn't be, too, especially his .300 BA.
  23. There are some very intelligent people on this board, which is probably why none of them are baseball owners (that I know of!). I'm trying to figure out how this works out if you're the CFO, or its equivalent, of a baseball team. How does the risk/reward ratio work out? You pay $100M, to get what reward? What's a World Series worth on the balance sheet? I remember Guizenga(?) back in '97, when the Marlins won their first WS, and he said it wasn't worth what he invested, and began divesting himself of said investments. Of course, he wasn't in it for the long haul, either -- a true baseball owner isn't in it for money, right?
