  1. Before people start ranting about how walks are useless, we *did* do a good job of getting baserunners tonight. The problem is that we have several black holes in the lineup that always make outs. If they would chip in with the occasional walk or base hit, we'd be fine, or at least more fine than we are right now. And when one of your black holes is your #3 hitter, you have problems. ~Bill
  2. Normally I'm on the other side of this discussion, but I think Ned Yost is a very good manager despite his in-game shortcomings. He does a great job of motivating his players, he doesn't hit-and-run, sacrifice, and steal very much, and he does a great job of limiting his starters' pitch counts. I'll take him, warts and all. I do wish he would reconsider some of his in-game tendencies and just generally improve as a tactician, but hopefully that will come with time. Sucky game. ~Bill
  3. Billy came into the game for Wes Helms, so he did his best Wes Helms impersonation. I can dig that. NOT. ~Bill
  4. Wow, Dusty avoids the smart move. Dusty's good at that. YEEESSS!!! Nice play by Ramon Martinez, but Brooks showed his vicious speed and beat it out. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif That was a nice pitch, too. Great job, Toolshed!!! ~Bill
  5. Its there for me, Al. Cute picture. ~Bill
  6. Argh... just got under it. Not a bad at-bat, though. Why do we pinch-hit for Moeller here but not a few innings previous? I don't get it. I like this move, though. C'mon Brooks. ~Bill
  7. Great AB by Brady... wow. That was excellent. Now Gint gets to face Farnsworth. Kyle hadn't pitched in a week until this past weekend after experiencing some soreness in his arm. Gotta be patient... dude can be wild. EDIT: And by the way, do you think that soreness could be attributed to the fact that he had been pitching pretty much every single day and throwing 100mph? Me, too. EDIT: And just like that, four pitches and a walk to Gint. Nice job, Keith. It's Magruder time. He's 2-for-2 with 2 walks, BTW. Can I get a 3-for-3? ~Bill
  8. Jose Macias has Jenkins Disease... he swings at absolutely everything *except* fastballs right down the middle. I don't get guys like that. Bennett's fastball/sinker looks good tonight, but the Cubs aren't having any trouble with it. He doesn't have an off-speed pitch of note (and as I write that, Bill Schroeder says the same thing) and that makes it tough to keep hitters off balance. He should try to learn a changeup of some sort (or if he has one, learn to trust it more). Since he tends to go 5 or more days without pitching, he's got a lot of time to work on that. And on an unrelated note, Sammy looks horrible. In past years, I've always been nervous when he was hitting against us. Now? I almost expect a K or 6-3 grounder. ~Bill
  9. St. Louis just destroyed the Reds 7-2. Are the Redbirds ever going to lose? They are amazing. ~Bill
  10. That's the same play Wes Helms couldn't make earlier in the evening. Nicely done, Billy. ~Bill
  11. God dangit. Jenkins is his usual stupid self, grounding into a DP. Nice job by Rusch getting over to cover, but Jenkins slows up and then trips over Rusch's foot. Not only is Glendon dealing, now he wants to hurt our injury-prone "star"? EDIT: Upon further review, bad call... Glendon didn't touch first base. No thank you. This game is anti-fun. ~Bill
  12. Grudzy with a Ben Grieve moment. How 'come Scotty looks like the 2003 version of himself, not the first-half-of-2004-version? This is very good to see, and hopefully the ASB gave him some time to regroup. EDIT: Stealing off of Rusch is really difficult... he's one of the best in baseball at limiting the stolen base. Nicely done by Po. If he could combine his 2003 on-base skills with his 2004 thievery skills, he'll be amazing and more than make up for his Grieve-esque centerfield play. Journey is going to sing the 7th inning stretch. Journey? We have five catcher's interferences this year. That's more than double *everyone else in baseball*. ~Bill
  13. Nice to see Billy getting some time at third, although Wes did have a hit earlier in the evening. Remember last year when I defended Glendon Rusch and got slammed pretty hard for doing so? Remember how I said he wouldn't suck this bad next year, 'cause 2003 was an aberration and he's really more like the pitcher he was in 2002? I told you so. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Seriously, though... we survived all those horrible starts by Glendon last year, so the least we deserve is to knock him around a bit tonight. ~Bill
  14. Here's a little back-and-forth from NSB: 1. That was a bad play by Posedink. Even if he catches it on the dive he isn't going to throw out Patterson at the plate so why take the chance? 2. Maybe he just likes to dive. 3. Edmonditis. 4. Or maybe that's why it took him to 27 before he got to the majors. LOL. ~Bill
  15. Grieve hasn't made a bad defensive play in a while... give him some slack, Toby - its not his fault he has Scotty Po's arm. Jeff Bennett in a tight game with a guy on third? Um, no thank you. Oh, and another really nice play by Grieve. That was probably luck, but I gotta pimp my man! And I agree with Daron... why not more Doug Davis? He didn't pitch bad. Jeff Bennett is bad, especially lately. This sucks. Oh yeah. And this sucks. ~Bill
  16. This sucks. A bad defensive play, a bloop double, a wild pitch, a strikeout, and a Scotty Po blunder. Doug Davis didn't pitch badly at all. This really sucks. ~Bill
  17. Daron Sutton says it was classless to boo Jimy Williams at the All-Star Game. Why? He was a horrible manager. His team was (is) ripping apart at the seams. The fans wanted him gone, and so they expressed their opinion. Don't be a dork, Daron. ~Bill
  18. Anyone want to take bets on what exactly is torn? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif The Northsidebaseball game thread is (ahem) 18 pages long. There are quite a few folks jumping off bridges right about now. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ~Bill
  19. This game thread is disappointing. After three days off, have we all forgotten how to rant endlessly about the minutia of the game? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  20. Oh, and in the immortal words of Jim Bowers (played by Jonathan Silverman) in the 1994 film Little Big League: "[Glendon], I know you're a decent human being... But die like a dog." Indeed. ~Bill
  21. How many times do you see it? A guy falls flat on his #$% whiffing at a pitch and then hits a home run. Happens all the time. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  22. In other news, Todd Hollandsworth is officially out for the entire series with his injuried "leg nerve" (medical term). Aramis Ramirez will probably be back tomorrow, though, or over the weekend at the latest. ~Bill
  23. We own Mark Prior. Strange, and satisfying. ~Bill
  24. We interrupt this regularly scheduled game thread for a special announcement... ... thanks to SlideBernieSlide, I just added the pitching matchups for the rest of the division to the DB Series Preview. They would have been up earlier, but I've been off-line since this morning. Thanks again to SBS for his help! We now return to your regularly scheduled game thread, already in progress. ~Bill
