  1. Snappers score one run on 15 hits -- I may have never seen that before -- bet there weren't many walks, if any; details soon... If Battle Creek had been so inefficient, they would have needed 90 hits. That's funny. ~Bill
  2. 8 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 8 SO His ERA is *ahem* 2.26. Wow. ~Bill
  3. That, my friends, will have the Brewers in the wild card lead by percentage points at the All-Star Break, and wouldn't that be a topic of discussion for the Fox broadcast team Tuesday night! You mean, other than... ... how dreamy Derek Jeter is. ... how the Red Sox can't manufacture runs or play defense because their GM is a geek. ... whether the Yankees or Red Sox will get Randy Johnson. ... whether the Yankees or Red Sox will get Roger Clemens. ... how dreamy Derek Jeter is. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That sure does sound like a Magic Formula, MB... I'm a little worried about Sleepy tomorrow, but in Peavey I still trust. ~Bill
  4. Well, Ben was pretty efficient... still, 116 pitches is a little excessive when he could have been done with just over 100. It's not like there's a huge difference in this one game between 7/8 innings and 100/116 pitches, but with the All-Star Game coming up I would have preferred we be as conservative as possible with Big Ben. Nedley has done a great job of limiting people's pitch counts and innings, so I don't want to sound too negative... that's one of Nedley's best attributes, IMO, and this wasn't a *terrible* decision, certainly. Ben is just unbelievable. This is like watching the Pedro of a few seasons ago, only he's *ours*. ~Bill
  5. More pitches for Ben is not a good idea... he's already going to have his usual routine screwed up by the All-Star Game, and our bullpen should be fully rested. He's been dealing, but there's no reason to unnecessarily get him into the 120-pitch range. Just MHO, of course, but I'm right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  6. Brady Clark needs to play, so Ben Grieve sits. Still no Wes Helms, though. CINCINNATI MILWAUKEE AVG HR RBI AVG HR RBI D'Angelo Jimenez 2B .259 6 26 Scott Podsednik CF .256 9 26 Barry Larkin SS .292 4 33 Craig Counsell SS .259 2 14 Ken Griffey Jr CF .253 20 60 Geoff Jenkins LF .254 12 46 Adam Dunn 1B .260 25 53 Lyle Overbay 1B .339 9 61 Jacob Cruz LF .259 2 18 Keith Ginter 3B .256 10 33 Wily Mo Pena RF .260 8 25 Brady Clark RF .248 4 21 Javier Valentin C .170 3 10 Bill Hall 2B .248 5 28 Brandon Larson 3B .210 3 12 Chad Moeller C .243 4 21 Cory Lidle RHP .138 0 2 Ben Sheets RHP .034 0 1 (6-6, 4.84) (8-5, 2.42) ~Bill
  7. Ben Hendrickson is awesome. Can't wait to see him in the All-Star game... and then in a Brewers' uniform. Sorry, Indy fans, but he's ours now. You can keep Wes Obermueller for awhile, though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  8. Am I seeing things, or was that a substantially thinner Geoff Jenkins that just popped out to right? What's up with the big swing, Craig? We love you 'cause you *don't* do that... we see enough big swings from Jenkins to last a lifetime. Oh well. We'll get one more chance in the ninth with Jenks, Overbay, and Grieve... just gotta hold 'em scoreless here and hope for the best. ~Bill
  9. Adam Dunn just had a Ben Grieve moment. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif Nice to see Matt Erickson get an AB... it was a pretty nice at-bat, too, despite the outcome. EDIT: Hey, whaddayaknow? Another Ben Grieve moment, this time from Aaron Harang. Fortunately, that error (err, "single") means no more Harang. C'mon, Counsell... be clutch http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif . ~Bill
  10. So am I seeing things when I view Jim Reynolds' strike zone as gigantic? I don't think so. Thanks to BP's Umpire Stats, here are the stats of hitters during games he's called compared to the league average: AVG OBA SLG ----------------------------- Reynolds .255 .319 .384 Overall .262 .328 .420 So in games Reynolds' calls, the batting average of players drops seven points, their on-base average drops nine points, and their slugging average drops thirty-six points. That's a 25 point drop in OPS. That's a lot. There are probably better ways to measure this, but it would require additional number crunching. This should give you a good idea of Reynolds' strike zone, though. EDIT: Pitchers' Run Averages in games called is probably a good way to measure umpires' relative strikes/balls tendencies. Here are the umpires with the *lowest* Runs Allowed Averages. Umpire RA -------------------- Doug Eddings 3.36 Tim Timmons 3.63 Brian Runge 3.83 John Hirschbeck 3.94 Jim Reynolds 3.99 Interesting stuff. I'm glad the numbers bear out my observations... consider this a blessed union of stats and scouting. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill ~Bill
  11. Have I mentioned how big the strike zone is, yet? Goodness. ~Bill
  12. They didn't hit well against the Cubs, either. Aaron Harang has been dealing, and that, combined with our offensive struggles, has handcuffed us at the plate. Its hard to know just how much of the blame should go to the Brewers and how much credit should go to Harang, but its obvious that he's pitching very well. Its perplexing, but I don't think we should enter full-out "our offense sucks" mode just yet. I don't know, though... tough to watch when our pitching is so solid - Cappy looks really good tonight. Oh, and don't fret... in Peavey, we must trust. ~Bill
  13. The offense hasn't been good tonight, but Cappy has kept it close. Couple thoughts: - Gigantic strike zone tonight, especially horizontally. Neither team seems to have figured that out yet, and so the pitchers are really exploiting the extended corners. (EDIT: The strike zone is now gigantic vertically, too... Podsednik just struck out at a pitch a good three inches below his knees, and strike one to Counsell was in a similar location. This is one of the biggest zones we've seen in a while). - Aaron Harang has been very solid since returning from the DL a few weeks ago. He went five scoreless at home against PIttsburgh and allowed one run in six innings at home against Cleveland. We might be catching him at the worst possible time, 'cause that's the best he's thrown all year. If he was pitching through elbow pain earlier, the rest might have really been helpful. As I write this, Cappy just surrendered a home run to Wily Mo to make it 3-0. Capuano has looked really good, but he's been uber-susceptible to the gopher ball a la Ben Sheets in 2003. Hopefully Mike Maddux can work his magic and help Chris cut down on that... its really his only fault at this point, although he could keep the walks down a bit more. Hopefully we can put together a late rally. Harang threw 94 and 105 pitches in his last two outings, the only two he's made since coming off the DL, FYI. ~Bill
  14. Diggins is back!!! That's super fantastic. You gotta edit the Link Report title today, MB... Jeff Housman's award is nice and all, but Diggins is back! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  15. Daron just said "Helms might get the next few days off." I'm floored. I hope JR, who's covering the club this series in Adam McCalvy's absence, gets on top of this and hooks us up with the details. ~Bill
  16. If you wanna see the brewers BP, go on a weekend game. Cool... thanks for clarifying. Its worth it to watch the Brewers' take BP, if anyone is considering it and hasn't done so before. Anyway, onto the game-related stuff: - Nice to see Wes with a day off... who says Nedley doesn't read brewerfan? Its interesting that Ginter is playing third and Billy second, as Nedley could have swapped them, but that's what I would do, too. Gint has a lot more experience at third and Hall at second, so I think this positioning maximizes their defensive value. - If you haven't read the DB series preview, I included a bunch of links to Reds' blogs and newspaper coverage. There's also a link to Reds Zone, a brewerfan forum-esque message board that is very active. If you like to check out opponents' views during/after the games, check it out. They're a nice community of fans, although their style of posting is a lot more "snipetty," meaning more shorter posts. Still, its definitely worth a looksy. - Bill and Daron just did their "most surprising player of the first half" and chose Overbay and Counsell, respectively. I'd have to go with Ben Sheets, although both of the above are certainly in the conversation (as are several others). If you could only pick one, who would it be? Let's go team. ~Bill
  17. You can only watch the Brewers' take BP on selected days, I think just Sundays (might be Saturdays, too, not entirely sure). I've gone to several Sunday games and if you get there when the gates open, you get to see the Brewers' hit for a good bit of time. Its a lot of fun. Since Peavey has called this one a win, I'm really confident. I'm beginning to wonder whether he's of this world or not... seems kinda like some sort of omnipotent creature, like Q of Star Trek TNG fame. How's that for a geeky game thread reference? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  18. Angel Salome is currently on the Helena disabled list with an undisclosed injury. MassBrew provided that info on the July Transactions Thread, noting that the reason he is assigned to Helena is because of a roster crunch. p082.ezboard.com/fbrewers...2311.topic ~Bill
  19. Hey Batman! So where's the link to the game thread on the Cubs fan boards for this one? That was great fun! Ask and ye shall receive... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif northsidebaseball.com/For...hp?t=11543 Only 27 pages tonight... not as enjoyable as last night's, but still worth the read. There's also a thread on their "regular" board (not the game thread one) titled "Brewers to the world series!!!!!"... northsidebaseball.com/For...hp?t=11578 Not that interesting, but kinda funny. Enjoy! ~Bill
  20. Words can't describe how utterly wonderful this is. ~Bill

  23. Go read this: www.northsidebaseball.com...hp?t=11504 Its the NorthSideBaseball Game Thread, and it is pure bliss to read. I registered for an account 'cause its annoying to only have 10 posts on a thread, but I braved about 20 pages so far and this is wonderful fun. mothership... you're a poet. That was beautiful. ~Bill
