  1. Unfortunately, Manny Parra is done for the season. From the JS: Money and the Huntsville club will be without the services of left-handed pitching prospect Manny Parra for the rest of the season. Parra has been sent to extended spring camp in Arizona, where the club is trying to decide whether his ailing shoulder needs surgery. "This has been nagging him the past couple of years," Money said. "We need to find out what the problem is. They're going to decide which way they want to go." And from MLB.com: Money confirmed that Double-A starter Manny Parra's season is over. The left-hander, who has experienced ongoing shoulder soreness, was sent to Arizona and doctors are trying to determine the source of soreness. Parra was 5-6 with a 3.96 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched. "He went back there where the weather's warm, and we'll just see what's going on," Money said. "He's back in Arizona and they'll decide which way they want to go with him." ~Bill
  2. Can you explain "secondary batting average"? Never heard of it. It's a (quick/easy) way of measuring what a player is contributing on offense independent of his batting average. The basic formula is: (TB - H + BB + SB - CS) / AB If Cruz had enough at-bats to qualify, he'd rank in the top 20 in baseball. Everybody else on that list is hitting at least .260 except Adam Dunn (who leads the league in Secondary Average). Cruz definitely wins the award for most misleading batting average (in a good way). ~Bill
  3. Jose Cruz, Jr. is sporting a very odd batting line. Entering play tonight, he's hitting .217/.350/.444 in 62 games (198 at-bats). His Secondary Average is *.427*... that's crazy. Talk about a deceiving batting average. ~Bill
  4. That was cool. This team is pretty awesome now that J.J. and Geoff are hitting, Overbay is hot, and Rickie is playing every day. Yesterday sucked, but today = awesome. ~Bill
  5. Billy is reminding me of Scotty Po last season... remember how Po would get so angry at himself, slam the bat down, and curse at himself all the time? He started playing better when he chilled out... hopefully somebody sits down with Billy and puts things into perspective. Matt Wise making fun of Derrick Turnbow is the greatest thing ever. I heart Wise. ~Bill
  6. How long was he on the D'Backs? 5 minutes in an offseason? The second time, yes. He was also with them for several years before he was purchased by Boston, though... Arizona was the team that originally signed him. They lost him because of a paperwork gaffe, though. ~Bill
  7. This guy still sucks. I have no confidence in him. I mean, sometimes he looks okay... but he's no Bottalico. That's a guy I can trust. I gotta go... the guys need a squeeze called! ~Nedley Yost
  8. LHP Craig Breslow had his contract purchased from Double-A Mobile by the Padres today and made his Major League debut. In an inning and two-thirds, the 24-year old allowed a hit and a walk and fanned three. Here's his play-by-play: [Eighth Inning] - Jason Michaels struck out swinging. - Jimmy Rollins struck out swinging - Kenny Lofton grounded out to shortstop. [Ninth Inning] - Chase Utley grounded out to second. - Bobby Abreu walked. - Pat Burrell singled to left, Abreu to second. - Ryan Howard struck out looking. (Linebrink relieved him and retired David Bell) Not bad, eh? Not exactly an easy introduction to the big leagues... those are some pretty big name guys. Congratulations, Craig! ~Bill
  9. Cards fans rule. So does Rickie. 460 feet... wow. ~Bill
  10. Sweet, Branyan even has an outfielder's glove. ~Bill
  11. This is just a fluke. This guy totally sucks. ~Ned Yost
  12. This guy sucks. He can't throw strikes. And he's got no velocity. He's just throwing meatballs up there. What a loser. I can't trust him at all. It'll be a cold day in Miami before he ever gets the ball in a game we're not losing 11-2. ~Ned Yost
  13. I like this Cards' pitcher... he's got good stuff and has put up awesome control numbers in the minors. Ever heard of Dixie State College of Utah? Me, neither, but that's where he went to school. ~Bill
  14. This is what replacement level pitching looks like. Jorge, please? ~Bill
  15. Jorge could have done that. ~Bill
  16. Jose Guillen was 0-for-1 with a strikeout against Julio Santana and had yet to face Matt Wise. Clearly, Santana owns him. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  17. Quote (JoeH33): Why was Moeller bunting there, especially since he's been on fire lately?? I don't think it was a bad idea, Joe... he probably saw Vinny "53 years old" Castilla playing back at third and thought he could beat out a hit. Castilla is still mighty good at defense, though, and he made a great play. Also: - Carlos' day off lasted all of two innings. Magruder's elbow must be bothering him... he got nailed right on the funny/crazy bone and it looked like he was in some pain. - I don't think anyone mentioned this but JP is going solo today as Bob Uecker had to leave after the first to be with his family after a relative passed away. Best wishes to him - he sounded pretty emotional handing it over to Jim before he left. ~Bill
  18. WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO! Congratulations, Dana! ~Bill
  19. Those Sid Fernandez comparisons are pretty right-on. Wilson Alvarez, too. He's changed his windup a bit since Beloit, I think, although I can't quite pinpoint what it is. Anyone? ~Bill
  20. That a boy, Dana.... sweet curveball. ~Bill
  21. Eveland, hello. Welcome to the big leagues, sir. ~Bill
  22. Why must Ricky pitch every day? Why must Ricky pitch high leverage innings against the heart of opposing teams' orders? Santana > Bottalico. Wise > Bottalico. Turnbow > Bottalico. ~Bill
  23. Bottalico, you suck very badly, indeed. Be gone with you. Soon. ~Bill
