  1. Indianapolis 1, Louisville (Reds) 0 Nice win for the Indians. Nate Teut with a stellar start and the brothers Childer finish things off. Richard Paz is the man - anyone else think he deserves a September callup? IndyIndians.com Site Game Summary: Behind Richard Paz's run scoring single in the top the eighth inning, the visiting Indianapolis Indians defeated the Louisville Bats 1-0 in a thrilling contest Friday evening at Louisville's Slugger Field. Paz's third base hit of the evening scored Indians pinch hitter Wilton Veras from third base with two outs in the inning for the only run scored in the first of a three game series. Indianapolis closer Jason Childers pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory for Tribe starting pitcher Nate Teut. Teut (3-5) pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven while holding the Bats to only four hits. The Indians (58-75) had collected only three hits heading into the top of the eighth inning, but broke through with a run off of Louisville reliever Joey Hamilton (8-3) with four straight singles in taking a 1-0 lead. Following a Steve Scarborough strikeout leading off the frame, Veras pinch hit for Teut by hitting a single through the left side of the Bats' infield. Ryan Knox followed with a base hit of his own, ripping a single to left field allowing Veras to move into third base, but on the play Knox was caught trying to advance to second base. With two outs and Veras on third, Paz lined a single through the middle and off the glove of a diving second baseman Andrew Beattie as Veras crossed home plate with the game's first run. Matt Childers entered the game for Indianapolis in the bottom of the eighth inning and struck out two batters in a scoreless frame before turning the game over to his older brother Jason in the ninth. Looking to pick up his 10th save of the season, Jason Childers allowed back-to-back singles to Emil Brown and Michael Coleman leading off the inning. After Jim Chamblee reached on an error by Tribe shortstop Scarborough, the bases were loaded for Louisville pinch hitter Kevin Baez. With a drawn in infield, Beaz grounded a Childers offering to Keith Luuloa at third base, Luuloa quickly fired to catcher Cody McKay for a force at home before McKay wheeled and fired to first base to complete the double play. Then with two outs and runners on second and third, Jason Maxwell hit a line drive to right field caught by Pete Zoccolillo for the game's final out, stranding the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position. Dustin Mosely started for Louisville, but left due to injury after batting in the bottom of the fifth inning. Moseley lined a single over the head of Indians centerfielder Ryan Knox, but made it only as far as first base on the play before leaving the game in obvious pain. The injury, later diagnosed as a dislocated left shoulder, forced the Bats to turn to reliever Rick Crushore to open the sixth inning. Crushore issued three walks in two hitless innings of relief before being lifted in favor of Hamilton to start the eighth. The Indians and Bats (74-59) will continue the series on Saturday evening when Pasqual Coco (9-8, 4.79) takes the mound for the Tribe against lefty Chris Michalak (1-0, 4.60). The Tribe return to Victory Field on Monday to open a six-game homestand, the final homestand of the 2003 season. 3. I can't speak for him, but I'm sure pogokat and I wouldn't complain too much if our 4th outfielder is someone like Brian Buchanan, Bubba Trammell, or even sausage-assaulter Randall Simon. Not a bunch of league-minimum, 1-HR-every-150 at bats weaklings. I gotta disagree, Geno, at least to some extent. 2003 EqA EqR RARP OBP SLG ------------------------------------------------- Brian Buchanan .288 27.9 8.0 .344 .473 Brady Clark .267 24.7 3.9 .332 .405 Randall Simon .246 33.5 -2.2 .310 .431 Bubba Trammell .207 4.3 -2.7 .279 .291 -------------------------------------------------Yes, Bubba Trammell has good career numbers but are any of these guys really better than Brady Clark? Maybe just a little... but honestly, Geno, why do you consider Clark a "AAAA rummie" but yet find Buchanan, Simon, and Trammell desirable? Because they've been in the majors for longer? Because they have better name recognition? Check out their respective ages and salaries: Age Salary ---------------------------------- Brian Buchanan 30 $ 325,000 Brady Clark 30 $ 312,500 Randall Simon 28 $1,475,000 Bubba Trammell 31 $2,500,000 ----------------------------------Buchanan is arguably a better value (4 runs for 13k) but Clark is certainly a close second. Personally, I don't mind having "no name" players who can produce at similar levels to the "big names". Just because Brady Clark wasn't a high draft pick or a Yankee doesn't mean he's not a good player. I'd prefer a player with more power off the bench but a combo of Mark Smith and Jason Conti or Brady Clark and Jason Conti or Brady Clark and Mark Smith isn't that bad. I'd rather they didn't start, but that's a different issue. $.02, ~Bill

  5. Columbus (Yankees) 4, Indianapolis 3 Luis Martinez with a brilliant start (as usual, I guess). 6. Carolina (Marlins) 2, Huntsville 0 Liriano put together a nice start but didn't get any support from his hitting mates. He set down the first 11 batters he faced before Krynzel lost a popup in the lights. Noochie Varner got kicked out of the game in the ninth after striking out. Corey Hart got a bloop hit to leadoff the inning but Varner and then Nelson struck out to end it. Krynzel walked twice and only struck out once: that's good, right? Corey Hart was 1-for-4 with a steal. Parker and Hundley both with nice relief outings. Two losses in a row, however. No joy in Mudcat-ville tonight. 7. Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 9, High Desert 8 What a game. Tommy Marx threw a wild pitch with a runner on third to end it in the bottom of the sixteenth. The California League has a 12AM curfew that doesn't allow an inning to begin after midnight. Apparently, that curfew can be waived at the discretion of the home team. Tonight, Bakersfield elected to keep on playing. J.M. Gold joined Mike Lindskog in the booth for what was supposed to be just a few innings. He was supposed to be charting but that was "optional" and he was "taking a break". The break ended up being more than a full game's worth. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif The two were really having fun... lots of great back-and-forths. J.M. is hilarious - very dry sense of humor and he has the "fake arrogance" bit down cold. He was able to take offense to pretty much anything... Lindskog mentioned that one of the Blaze hitters had two homers (or something like that) and Gold, with total seriousness, was like "thanks a lot - I gave up one of those". Hilarious. Some tidbits: - He's getting married, but not for a while, to girlfriend Jackie - Greg Schaub got married and has a "cute little house" in Illinois with a "cute little shed." He's coaching at some school I can't remember - Western Illinois State or something like that. J.M. had a lot of fun with the "cute" jokes all night. - His birthday is the tenth, but they always get it wrong on rosters and stuff - 4/18/80 is wrong, 4/10/80 is right; we've got it wrong at BrewerFan - Jim or Brian, want to fix that? - Lindskog thinks his wife has a crush on Gold... "She's only human", J.M. explained - Nice comments from J.M. about Charlie Lozada; the 19-year old got to hit BP against the rehabbing pitchers like J.M., Diggins, Durocher, etc. while in Arizona; he has played more third than catcher, and J.M. says he is improving every time out there J.M. provided a lot of intelligent comments about the game, the league, and his teammates. Good stuff... one of the best "player-in-the-booth" stints I've ever heard. He took over by himself in the fifteenth so that Mike could call his wife. I must say, if J.M. ever gives up playing, he's got a future in the booth. Those of you who never listen to the Mavs are really missing out. Someone in the know told me nobody reads anything after the box score so I wanted to get that out of the way first. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Line Score: CAL FINAL R H E - - - HIGH DESERT 8 20 1 BAKERSFIELD 9 10 3Game time: 5 hours and 20 minutes. 9. why have him pitch the 8th? Who knows? They have Brooks up in the pen and he will likely come on at the first sign of trouble. Why not have him bat and then stay on to pitch? Or again, why not give Enrique an at-bat in a non-critical situation? This is especially strange considering Kinney's last start in which Yost pulled him very early. I'm sure he's trying to save the bullpen, but two innings for Kieschnick won't exactly kill the staff. ~Bill
  10. Hmm. 7-0 game in the bottom of the sixth. Very unlikely that the Phillies will comeback. What better chance to get Enrique Cruz a few at-bats and a few innings on defense? I swear, I don't know what Yost is thinking (or if he is at all). ~Bill
  11. Columbus (Yankees) 3, Indianapolis 2 Derrin Ebert picks up the loss after a cross-country flight from California. Is there a better name in the IL than Fernando Seguignol? I can't think of one. JJ Furmaniak is my favorite name in all of minor league baseball, though... Anyway: Wes Helms with a single and a punchout in 3 rehab ABs. Cody McKay with a pair of doubles and Ryan Knox a pair of singles and a pair of steals. Good outings by Foster, Childers (Matt), and Ebert... although the latter picks up a hard-luck loss. IndyIndians.com Site Game Summary: Fernando Seguignol's solo home run leading off the fourth inning propelled the Columbus Clippers to the victory over the visiting Indianapolis Indians 3-2 on Wednesday evening. Seguignol's league-leading 26th homer was his eighth in 13 games against the Indians this season. The Indians (57-73) scored single runs in the first and second innings to gather an early 2-0 lead against Columbus starting pitcher Eric Schmitt, but Columbus answered back with two in the bottom of the second on a triple off the bat of Curtis Pride to even the score. Ryan Knox scored the game's first run in the top of the first following a single leading off the ballgame. Knox went on to steal both second and third base in the inning before Jim Rushford lined a one-out single to right field to plate Knox with the game's first run. In the second, Cody McKay led off the inning with a double to deep right and later scored on Steve Scarborough's sacrifice fly as the Indians took a 2-0 lead. The Tribe offense showed signs of breaking through early, as the team picked up six base hits in the first two innings of the ballgame in taking the early lead. From there, however, the bats went silent as Indianapolis managed only three hits over the final seven innings. Schmitt (5-0) pitched 6.0 innings, retiring the final eight batters he faced, before turning the game over to the Columbus bullpen to open the seventh inning. The Clippers used four relievers to nail down the victory, as Sam Marsonek pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 16th save of the season. Derrin Ebert (0-1), making his first appearance with the Tribe this season, pitched 5.0 innings allowing seven hits and all three Columbus runs, including the deciding blast off the bat of Seguignol. Ebert, the Indians representative in the 2002 Triple-A All-Star game, had pitched in both the Arizona and Chicago Cubs organizations this season before signing back with the Brewers in early August. The Indians and Clippers will conclude the two game series on Thursday evening when lefty Luis Martinez (3-0, 0.86) takes the mound for the Tribe to face Christian Parker (6-6, 4.81) and Columbus. The Tribe will then travel to Louisville for a three-game weekend series before returning for the final homestand of the season on Monday at Victory Field. 14. Arizona A's 10, Arizona Brewers 8 This team has really been scuffling lately. At least Forrest Martin got promoted... I'm sure all of the youngsters are happy for the 23-year old right-hander. Nice outing from Robbie Wooley, whose 2.81 ERA is very impressive. Gilbert Acosta had a fantastic day: 4 hits, a run, an RBI, two doubles, and a steal. Adam Mannon did some yardwork and picked up 4 RBI. Both Guhring and Phillips added 2 hits as well. Nice job, except for that whole "loss" thing. ~Bill EDIT: You beat me with the box by a few minutes, Bill -- so I'll paste my comments here - MassBrew Tale of two top 2003 RHP high school draft picks, as 6th rounder Robbie Wooley threw five solid innings and 8th rounder Ryan Marion had a tough go of things today. Marion's been solid otherwise, and there's no point in fretting about a tough outing or two for kids like Wooley, Marion, Tommy Hawk, or Tyler Morrison, all high school righties who have had good showings this summer; SS Gilberto Acosta is looking more and more like Beloit's shortstop in 2004, and not Helena's... The Snappers committed two errors, one by Callix Crabbe and the other by Ballouli. 2> Bo Hall definitely does not have Ross River Fever. That's good to know. Also good to know is that he struck out 4 in 3.2 scoreless innings. Nice. Josh Alliston deserves some love, too, for save number 9. 3> Bibbs, Gwynn, and Weeks combined to go only 1-for-8 but they also combined for 6 walks, two apiece. The former two each added a steal and the latter a sacrifice fly. 4> Adam Heether went yard again, #2 as a Snapper. THDH (Travis Hinton, only this time playing right) added a double, as did Bibbs. Heether, Hinton, and Prince each had two hits. 5> A. Sanchez committed an error. How ironic. No game stories from the Bees' or Snappers' sites as of "post time", as Jim would say. Hopefully one or the other (or preferably both) will put something together for us by tomorrow. ~Bill
  16. Ogden (Dodgers) 10, Helena 7 What a crazy game! The Helena staff surrenders 20 (!) hits but the Rookie Brewers still almost pull it out. Not what you would call a "pitchers' duel", was it? Helena Independent Record Game Story: Barrett Whitney "Action Shot"... www.helenair.com/articles...003_01.txt HelenaBrewers.net Game Summary: Helena pitchers gave up 20 hits, their season high as Ogden beat the Brewers 10-7 Tuesday night at a smokey Kindrick Field in Helena. Ogden scored six runs on seven hits in the second inning and never looked back. Helena did attempt to rally scoring five runs in the fourth, but it was not enough. Augustin Septimo stole home on the back end of a double steal in the fourth, Helena is now 7 for 7 on double steals of home for the season. (That's an interesting stat -- Batman) Barret Whitney went three-for-five with two doubles and an RBI for the Brewers. Robby Deevers added two hits and two RBI of his own. Drew Anderson also had two hits. Kenny Durost pitched one and one third inning allowing six earned runs on seven hits. With the loss Durost drops to 2-4 on the season. Greg Moriera pitched the final two innings getting out of a bases load jam in the ninth to not allow any runs. Helena Box Score: Looks like 2002 4th rounder Nic Carter is officially a RHP now... 17. Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 2, High Desert 0 Yet another tough loss for the Mavs. Chad Petty was brilliant but Tony Stavros, usually one of High Desert's most reliable relievers, gave up two runs in the eighth. Dewon Brazelton started for Bakersfield but Petty matched him pitch-for-pitch. Nothing like a number one pick with an MLB contract to get a soft-tossing left-hander on track, huh? Wishful thinking, perhaps . HDMavs.com Game Summary: The High Desert Mavericks hit the road on Tuesday for the final road trip of the 2003 season. The Mavs dropped game one of the six-game Northern swing, as the Bakersfield Blaze beat the High Desert Mavericks for the fourth straight game, shutting out the Mavs by a final score of 2-0 on Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield. Bakersfield scored two runs in their final at-bat, giving the Blaze a 4-0 record over the Mavs, and a five-game winning streak overall. Both starting pitchers had their best outings of the season respectively. Mavs lefty Chad Petty, who was looking for his first win in a Mavs uniform, pitched seven shutout innings and left with the game scoreless. Petty struck out nine and walked three, while allowing just three hits in his seven innings. On the other side of the coin, Blaze starter Dewon Brazelton, who started the year in the Major Leagues with Tampa Bay, held the Mavs in check, allowing just five hits in seven shutout innings. The game was decided by the bullpens, as Tony Stavros (2-3) allowed two runs in just .2 innings of relief. After striking out Heath Kelly to open the eighth, Stavros walked Brian Martin. Luis DePaula knocked in the game-winning run as the Blaze took a 1-0 lead. DePaula would then score on a two-out double by Eric Reece, giving the Blaze a 2-0 advantage. Chris Crawford, who came on in the eighth and worked a 1-2-3 inning, got out of a jam in the ninth. Johnny Raburn?s groundball to short was thrown in the Bakersfield dugout, allowing Raburn to reach second base to open the ninth. Crawford (6-6) would then get John Toner, Jeremy Frost and Ozzie Chavez on consecutive groundouts to end the game and secure the win. The Mavs only scoring chance came in the first inning, as Froilan Villanueva and Scott Candelaria had back-to-back hits with two outs. Brazelton got out of the jam, as Johnny Raburn lined out to the second baseman. The Mavs had only six base runners the rest of the game. Ralph Santana had a season-best 11-game hitting streak come to an end, going 0-4 on the night. John Toner went 1-2 and was on base three different times with two walks. The shutout marks the third time this year that the Mavs have been blanked. High Desert has now lost eight in a row and drops to 13-45 in the second half and 38-90 overall. The Mavs look to avoid tying their longest losing streak of the year on Wednesday night, as Chris Saenz (8-9) takes on Bakersfield?s Chris Seddon. Game time in Bakersfield is at 7:15 PM (9:15 Central). On Tuesday afternoon, it was announced that Mavs left-hander Derrin Ebert was promoted to the AAA Indianapolis Indians. Ebert, who was a AAA All-Star with the Indians last season, was 2-1 in three appearances with the Mavs. The Hesperia native will start for the Indians on Wednesday night as the Indians visit the Columbus Clippers. 18. From MLB.com: The Brewers released right-hander David Manning on Tuesday. Manning was 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA in two starts for the Brewers. Too bad. At least he got a chance to play in the bigs... I'm sure that's something he'll never forget. ~Bill

  20. Jason Shelley is amazing. How did every team in baseball manage to ignore this guy? He is dominating Double-A and I think it's reasonable to assert that he's earned himself legitimate "prospect" status. This for a guy who only a few months ago was pitching in the Frontier League. Kudos, Jason! And kudos to the front office, too... I'm not sure who was responsible for picking him up, but they deserve a lot of credit for recognizing his talent. ~Bill PS: If anyone has seen him pitch in person, please chime in with your thoughts. I know there's a few Huntsville-ians on the boards... let us know what you think.
  21. Actually, why would you not play the 2nd game? Anyone really think 25 innings wears you out that much more than 18? It's not the innings, it's the start time. They didn't get underway until well past 1AM... that seems kinda late. ~Bill
  22. Greg Vaughn was an excellent player for a lot of years. Injuries certainly derailed his career... but when he was healthy, he was one of the better oufielders (offensively-speaking) in baseball. While his career batting average isn't impressive, his OBP was .337 and his SLG was .470. Excluding this year, that was 14 years of mostly-productive playing. He averaged 33 homers and his year of 27 was probably about what we can expect from Prince: .267/.369/.482 with 30 homers. From 1993 to 2000, he was a very good hitter. If Prince has a "prime" that good and that long (8 seasons) I'll be very happy. He was a four-time All-Star and finished fourth in the MVP voting in both 98 and 99. I'll take that any day of the week. ~Bill
  23. Two interesting tidbits from the Beloit Daily News Article: Fielder went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and scored twice. He now has 100 RBIs, five shy of the Beloit record held by Greg Vaughn, accomplished in 1997. LOL. Vaughny was in San Diego in 1997 - that's the year before he hit 50 bombs. The record was actually set in 1987, when Vaughn (who signed as an undrafted free agent out of the U. of Miami) was only 22 years old. He hit .305 with 33 homers and 105 RBIs and his 31 doubles helped him rack up a gaudy .593 slugging percentage. He walked 102 times for a .492 on-base percentage (not counting HBPs, which I can't find a record of). Prince is a full three years younger than Vaughny was and he is putting up comparable numbers. If Prince turns out to be the calibre player of Greg Vaughn, I don't think anyone will be complaining. ...Friday's attendance was 3,483, the highest attendance for a game played at Pohlman Field this season. That's great to see... I'm sure the guys appreciate the support they're getting. It must be kind of disappointing to go to places like Kane County and Dayton where 7,000+ turn out every night. At the same time, drawing 3,000+ in Beloit is a bigger accomplishment than drawing 7k from Dayton or Chicago... so in a way, they should be very proud. Good stuff. I think I'm going to investigate the Prince/Vaughn parallels a little more... might be fodder for a feature article, no? ~Bill
  24. Glendon Rusch did an amazing job in the booth. He was better than a lot of "real" color commentators I've heard... what an intelligent, well-spoken guy. I know we've all gotten on him earlier in the year but this stint in the booth was really well done. Scott Podsednik seems to have broken out of that slump quite nicely. A game-winning three-run homer? I'd say that's pretty good. A scare in the ninth, but Kolb got out of it. Very exciting game... seems like the non-TV affairs always are like that. ~Bill
