  1. Note to Milwaukee - AAA and AA rosters were eligible to be expanded by one to 24 on Monday. Hello?! LOL... I was just thinking that, too. To make matters worse, Corey Hart was available only as an emergency pinch-hitter because of a food poisoning incident. Noochie Varner is absolutely raking tonight, though... and it appears that Hardy is getting hot again. Good stuff. Oh, and I guess Hundley's plate appearance yesterday was his first ever. This kind of stuff is expected in High Desert... but Huntsville? I thought this was the affiliate we liked. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill

  3. Mike Lindskog in fine form tonight -- he admits allergy medicine has him a bit loopy this evening. Still getting the job done, though -- he did just make the very astute observation that Olive Garden's lunch portions are much smaller than their dinner entrees. Very true, Michael. LOL... I think Mike should be "called up" to fill in for Uecker the rest of the season. It will be rough if our affiliation with High Desert does not get renewed... I can't imagine what Lindskog would sound like doing a good team's games. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ~Bill
  4. Provo (Angels) 12, Helena 6 Tough loss for the Rookie Leaguers from Helena in the first game of their "Utah Swing". PIO FINAL R H E - - - HELENA 6 10 1 PROVO 12 15 2 HelenaBrewers.net Site Summary: The Provo Angels scored five runs on five hits in the fifth inning to beat Helena 12-6 Monday night in Provo. Provo improves to 13-1 in the second half the best record in the league. Helena is now 8-6 for the second half and 33-19 overall. Sweet Lou Palmisano went two-for-three with three rbi before leaving the game with a leg injury attempting to break up a double play. Vinny Rottino continued his stellar play going two-for-three on the evening. Guilder Rodriguez and Augustin Septimo had two rbi a piece for Helena. Sweet Lou? It's Captain Lou, guys... get with the program http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . Hopefully the injury is nothing serious. ProvoAngels.com Site Summary: Not exactly well written but it does have an action shot of someone... not sure whom, though. If anybody can identify #5 of the Helena club, please do so. www.provoangels.com/index...post_id=98 Box score soon. ~Bill

  7. From Sports Ticker's Daily Minor League Highlights: INDIANAPOLIS (INT) LHP SHANE NANCE threw two strong frames of relief to extend his scoreless streak to 31 innings and help the Indians nip the Charlotte Knights, 4-3, in 11 innings. Nance entered the game to start the eighth and yielded a pair of hits over his two innings of work, departing before the 10th. The 25-year-old, who is among the top lefthanded pitchers in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, lowered his ERA to 1.60. After five outings in May in which Nance allowed at least one run, he has shut down opponents in 22 consecutive appearances, yielded only 12 hits during the streak. Indianapolis won the contest in the 11th when OF JASON CONTI drove in SS STEVE SCARBOROUGH with a two-out single, lifting the Indians to their third extra-inning victory in four days. milb.com/highlights/?id=1314 Nice to see the Indians get some love. ~Bill
  8. Huntsville 5, West Tenn (Cubs) 2 Bit of a scare in the ninth but the Stars, despite being outhit, get one back in the win column. Solid start from Jeff Hundley but the left-hander only lasted 4 innings. Brian Adams allowed two unearned runs but fellow-Adams Mike picked him up and got the save after retiring only one batter. Two hits for Machado but the second-baseman also committed an error. Krynzel and Hardy both 1-for-3 with a walk, the former adding a steal and the latter's hit a double. Hundley was 1-for-1 with a steal... not bad for a pitcher. 9. Miscellaneous Tidbits of Note Two articles of interest on Brewers.MLB.com today: Snappers catcher is right at home milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com...p&c_id=mil A profile of John Vanden Berg, the Snapper's catcher and son of the Brewers' groundskeeper. Miller Park's "Battle of Wisconsin" milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com...p&c_id=mil Penned by our very own Kaukana (a.k.a. J.R.), this fantastic article includes extensive quotes by Gwynn, Melvin, and Nichols. In other news, Prince Fielder and Manny Parra were named Brewers' minor league players of the month for July. Getting Their Due - Tom Haudricourt, JS Online First baseman Prince Fielder and left-hander Manny Parra, both of Class A Beloit, were named the Brewers' minor-league player and pitcher of the month for July. Fielder, a first-round draft pick in 2002, batted .339 with 12 home runs, 34 RBI, 22 runs scored, a .720 slugging percentage and .420 on-base percentage. Parra went 3-0 with a 2.21 ERA in six starts, with six walks and 28 strikeouts in 362/3 innings. Brewers fans can watch Fielder on Thursday when Beloit takes on (Apple-ton) in a Midwest League game at 6:30 p.m. at Miller Park. Parra was scheduled to start that game for the Snappers but probably will be scratched. He is scheduled to be examined today by Brewers physician William Raasch for shoulder stiffness. www.jsonline.com/sports/b...161380.asp No. 1 pick debuts: - Adam McCalvy, MLB.com Rickie Weeks went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in his professional debut on Sunday and will join Single-A Beloit on Tuesday. Weeks, the Brewers' top pick in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, knocked a pair of two-run singles on Tuesday for the rookie-level Arizona Brewers, who are based at the Brewers' Spring Training facility in Phoenix. He collected three more hits in a simulated game on Wednesday, then boarded a flight to join Beloit. The Snappers are scheduled to play the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (SEA) at Miller Park at 6:30 p.m. CT on Thursday. Keeping up with Jones: - Adam McCalvy, MLB.com Melvin reported some "encouraging news" from a radiologist who examined an MRI of right-hander Mike Jones' elbow. Contrary to an earlier diagnosis, the radiologist saw no signs of tears and instead called the injury a slight ligament sprain with swelling. Jones, the Brewers' top draft pick in 2002, traveled to Phoenix for rest and will be re-examined in about a month. milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com...p&c_id=mil ~Bill

  12. Well that Major League career was fun while it lasted. EDIT: Riddle me this: why do you remove Manning for Burba when the next hitter due up for the Marlins is Redman (a terrible hitting pitcher) and your own pitcher's spot is due up first in the following half inning? So that Enrique Cruz and/or Billy Hall don't get even one at-bat? What does Al say about this? Managing with your heart, not with your head? Yeah. ~Bill

  17. I'm going to keep posting this until someone makes an argument disputing it. From an interview in Slate, Bill James: "Well, no, there is no such thing as a Four A hitter. That idea, as I understand it, envisions a "gap" between the majors and Triple A, with some players who fall into the gap. There is no such gap. In fact, there is a very significant overlap between the major leagues and Triple A. Many of the players in Triple A are better than many of the players in the majors." He continues: "When there is a disconnect between a player's major league and minor league records, some people want to ascribe this to some mystical difference between major league baseball and minor league baseball. Unless you can say specifically what that difference is, this is akin to magical thinking - asserting that there is some magical "major league ability," which is distinct from the ability to play baseball. The same sorts of disconnects happen routinely in the middle of major league careers - not often as a percentage, but they happen. Everybody who plays rotisserie baseball knows that some guys you paid big money for because they were good last year will stink this year. It is not necessary or helpful to create some magical "major league ability" to explain those occasional disconnects between major league and minor league seasons." That's all. ~Bill

HuntsvilleStars.com reports that Hendrickson was removed for "precautionary reasons". Hopefully this proves to be a smart move and Ben is A-Okay. I'm sure everyone in the organization is extra-sensitive to pitchers' arms today. HuntsvilleStars.com Game Summary: After three consecutive late-inning victories, Huntsville?s luck finally ran out. In the opener of a four-game series, West Tenn rallied to win in the bottom of the ninth, 3-2, on Friday night at Pringles Park. The playoff-bound Stars (65-50, 25-22) fell 1½ games behind Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half chase. Down 2-1 in the sixth, the Diamond Jaxx mounted a threat against reliever Ken Ray. Mike Dzurilla drew a one-out walk and raced to third on Jason Dubois? two-out single. Ray Sadler followed with a slow roller to short, where J.J. Hardy fielded and threw on the run. Sadler was ruled safe on a very close play at first, and Dzurilla scored the tying run. In the bottom of the ninth, Sadler reached on a high pop-up in front of the plate that grazed third baseman Corey ?s glove for a two-base error. Jackson Melian, a Star in 2002, received an intentional walk, then Alan West lined out to right after twice failing to execute a sacrifice bunt. Lukas McKnight was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for pinch-hitter Blair Barbier, who lofted a deep sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sadler for a walk-off West Tenn win, 3-2. The Stars erased an early 1-0 deficit on Noochie Varner?s solo homer in the second. Varner?s fifth homerun of the year was a monster, nearly reaching the highway beyond a hillside over the leftfield wall. Huntsville grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fifth, when Ray drew a two-out walk, took third on Alejandro Machado?s hit-and-run single and scored on a wild pitch. Huntsville?s bullpen carried the day, as starter Ben Hendrickson was removed from the game for precautionary reasons. Hendrickson?s velocity was down, and Stars pitching coach Stan Kyles decided not to take a chance. Hendrickson twice this season has had disabled list stints of a month in length with soreness in his prized right elbow and forearm. ?The bullpen did a solid job. When you have to go to the pen in the second inning and you hold them to two runs, that?s all we can ask of them and more. There are a lot of tired arms down there. They?ve been resilient all year. Whatever we?ve asked them to do, they?ve stepped up,? Kyles said. Ken Ray provided yeoman?s work out of the pen, authoring five stellar innings, his longest stint of the year. Ray permitted just one run on five hits and one walk while fanning four. Matt Parker (8-6) threw 2 2/3 solid frames but suffered a tough loss, giving up only an unearned run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Jaxx starter Mike Nannini recorded 10 strikeouts while permitting two runs on three hits and two walks in seven stanzas, and Emanuel Ramirez (3-1) notched the win in relief, surrendering one hit with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. In Saturday night?s game two of the series, Huntsville matches righty Pedro Liriano (7-11, 3.63) against Jaxx right-hander Jon Leicester (5-5, 3.74). Game time is 7:05 p.m. ~Bill

A--14385Looks like a nice night for Cody McKay. Great job by Martinez and Nance and Childers held it down until Rushford came through in the tenth. Good execution to get the runner over and it sounds like the defense did their part as well. Good win for the Indians. IndyIndians.com Game Summary: The Indianapolis Indians picked up their second straight extra-innings victory on Friday night as Jim Rushford singled home Alex Delgado with the game's lone run in the Tribe's 1-0 victory over the Charlotte Knights. The win follows up a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on Thursday night at Toledo. With the game still scoreless heading into the bottom of the 10th, Delgado led off the inning with a double to right-center off of Charlotte reliever Doug Nickle. After Jason Conti's bunt failed to move Delgado to third, Rich Paz grounded out to first base allowing Delgado to advance. The Knights then brought in lefty Dave Sanders to face the left-handed batting Rushford, who wasted no time in lofting the first Sanders offering just over the outstretched glove of Charlotte centerfielder Joe Borchard for an Indians victory. Making his fourth start of the season for Indianapolis, Luis Martinez pitched 6.0 shutout innings while allowing only three hits. Martinez, who has yet to allow a run since being promoted from Double-A Huntsville on July 24th, extended his scoreless innings streak to 26.1 innings by striking out five Knights against four walks on 90 pitches. Martinez benefited from an outstanding defensive performance from his battery mate Delgado. In the top of the second inning Martinez issued a walk and allowed a base hit to Armando Rios to put runners on first and third with only one out. Martinez battled back to strike out Ryan Hankins, and on the same play Delgado's throw to Paz at second was in time to catch Rios attempting to steal second to end the inning. One inning later Delgado again came to the rescue as Martinez allowed a walk and a base hit to put runners on first and second with no outs. Following a flyout by Aaron Miles, Delgado gunned down his second runner in as many innings when he caught Jorge Nunez attempting to steal second base on the back end of a double steal. Then with two outs and a man on third, Delgado picked up Tim Hummel's squeeze bunt attempt and fired a bullet to Rushford at first for the final out of the inning. Shane Nance pitched 2.2 innings of shutout baseball in relief of Martinez to run his own streak of scoreless innings to a team-high 29.0 innings. Jason Childers pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Indians to earn his third victory of the season, improving to 3-4. Overshadowed in the late-inning heroics was a solid performance turned in by Charlotte starting pitcher Jon Adkins. Adkins pitched 8.0 innings allowing only five hits before leaving with the game still tied at 0-0. The two teams will continue the three game series on Saturday night when the Tribe sends lefty Doug Davis (1-2, 4.55) to the mound to face Ryan Kohlmeier (7-4, 4.45) and the Knights. Nickelodeon cartoon character Sponge Bob will be at the park. On a related note, it appears that Luis was almost promoted to start Saturday in Milwaukee. The Huntsville Stars game summary on Friday night/Saturday morning features this tidbit: "Former Stars pitcher Luis Martinez received the call-up to Milwaukee Friday and will make his big league debut Saturday against the Florida Marlins at Miller Park." Obviously that's not the case, but it would appear that the Brewers' had been thinking seriously about it and the Huntsville gang jumped the gun. Interesting. ~Bill

  24. He's gotta learn somewhere, Bill. AA with a playoff spot sewn up seems like a good spot to me. That's true... but at the same time, you don't really want to be stuck with just 3 outfielders. If D.J. gets called up, he and Nelson can split the time in left, Gemoll and Nelson can split the time at first, and all three can split time at DH. That means 2 of the 3 will be playing every day and all 3 will get time against AL teams. Just an idea, ~Bill
  25. Stealing against IRod with one-out and Jenkins at the plate? Um, okay. ~Bill
