If DeJean had been traded (or a trade was pending), I doubt he'd be pitching right now. Bad sign. ~Bill -

Yeah, he re-aggravated his hammy problem. I doubt he'll play at all in Montreal, but that's just speculation. ~Bill -

IndyIndians.com Game Recap: INDIANAPOLIS -- Luis Martinez picked up his second win in as many starts as the Indianapolis Indians cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Richmond Braves on Tuesday night. Martinez, called up from Double-A Huntsville last Thursday, extended his scoreless innings streak to 12.1 innings with six scoreless frames. In a rematch of last Thursday night's contest at Richmond, Martinez again found himself locked in a pitchers' duel with Braves starter Chris Fussell (7-11) over the early innings of the ballgame. In a similar manner, the Tribe offense found ways to push runs across home plate against Fussell as the game went on, but the Braves' bats still had no answer for Martinez's breaking ball. The Indians broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Keith Luuloa led off the frame with a double off the top of the wall in left field. Doug Jennings followed with a single to move Luuloa over to third base for Steve Scarborough. With no outs in the inning, Fussell induced Scarborough into a ground ball right back to the pitcher which Fussell fielded and was able to get Jennings at second for the force out while Luuloa was unable to advance from third. After striking out Martinez for the second out, Fussell faked a pickoff to third base before wheeling around in an attempt to catch Scarborough leaning from first. Scarborough, however, did more than lean as he was off for second base on Fussell's first move. Fussell hesitated before throwing wildly to Richmond shortstop Jesse Garcia. The ball hopped past Garcia and into center field allowing Luuloa to score the game's first run and give the Tribe a 1-0 lead. The lead was all Martinez needed, as he pitched six innings allowing six hits while striking out seven Richmond batters. Martinez proved himself adept at pitching out of jams throughout the ballgame, stranding eight runners on base over his six innings, including pitching out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the top of the sixth by striking out Nick Green and Rontrez Johnson to end the inning. Shane Nance pitched two innings in relief of Martinez allowing two hits before giving way to Jason Childers for the ninth. Childers closed the door for his fifth save of the season walking one and striking out two. The Tribe picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mark Smith, Cody McKay and Luuloa hit consecutive singles with Smith scoring on Luuloa's base hit. The Indians (47-61) and Braves (51-60) will finish up the season series on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field when a pair of lefthanders takes the mound. Doug Davis (0-1, 4.50) will pitch for Indianapolis and Ball State product Sam McConnell (5-1, 2.49) will toe the slab for Richmond. Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, High Desert 2 Chad Petty was better tonight but still not where he needs to be. Clark with another solid game... he really is too good for the Cal League. High Desert Site Game Summary: San Bernardino, CA ? Former Maverick Cristian Guerrero's solo home run in the second inning put Inland Empire ahead to stay, as the 66ers beat the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. Guerrero's sixth of the year gave the 66ers a 2-1 lead against Mavs starter Chad Petty. Petty (0-8) allowed a run in each of the first three innings and one more in the fifth, as the 66ers took a 4-1 lead. Petty allowed four runs on the night, but only three were earned in 6.1 innings. The Mavs closed to within two, as Daryl Clark tripled to center field and scored on a Scott Candelaria ground ball, pulling the Mavs to within 4-2 in the sixth. That was all the Mavs could muster against 66ers starter Tim Rall (1-0), who earned his first Cal League win with six good innings of work. After chasing Petty, the 66ers got a run in the eighth off of Mavs reliever Justin Backsmeyer to make it 5-2. The Mavs went 1-2-3 in the ninth, dropping their record to 0-64 when trailing after eight innings this season. Rene Cortez earned his first save this year by working the final frame. The Mavs first run came in the second inning, as Ozzie Chavez knocked in Jeremy Frost with a two-out single, which at the time, tied the game at 1-1. Guerrero, who was claimed off wavers by the Seattle Mariners midway through the season, finished the night 2-3 with two RBIs. With the loss, the Mavs are now 42 games under .500 at 33-75 and just 8-30 in the second half. The Mavs try to stop the four-game skid, facing Inland Empire again on Wednesday night. Chris Saenz (7-8), who threw seven shutout innings in his last start, takes on All-Star Ryan Ketchner (11-4) at 7:05 (9:05 Central) at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Cristian Guerrero is playing for Inland Empire and he just went yard against High Desert. As he crossed the plate, he patted Joel Alvarado (the Mavs' catcher) on the head and laughed. Apparently, Alvarado was mighty peeved... he was yelling and pointing into the dugout at Cristian. Pretty funny stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Guerrero gets a little chin music next time up. What a loser. EDIT: Turns out Cristian also took his time getting around the bases. Lindskog said he took at least 15 steps between second and third and he did a little slide step/shuffle as he rounded the base. Again, what a loser. ~Bill -

No, it's not wrong at all. I find myself feeling the same way. This home run and the 5 hit-trip will be evidence that Clayton is improving and using his great hands. As a result, Billy Hall and Enrique Cruz will get to know each other real well as they waste away on the bench. 150 ABs for Cruz? I'd be surprised if he got 75 at this point. Why couldn't Seattle have traded for Clayton instead of Sanchez!?! ~Bill -

They gave up garbage, too http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif. EDIT: Actually, Kelly was a second round pick in '97. He's a career .257 hitter in the minors with some power. Baseball Cube doesn't have OBPs, though... last year at Tacoma it as a horrible .295 but he is only 24. From Rotoworld: Mariners acquired infielder Rey Sanchez from the Mets for outfielder Kenny Kelly. If the plan is to use Sanchez strictly as a reserve shortstop, this is a good trade. The Mariners have tried to get by with Mark McLemore and Willie Bloomquist at shortstop while Carlos Guillen has been hurt, but neither player is an adequate option. The Mariners still need to go get a third baseman. Sanchez shouldn't have any value in AL-only leagues. Mets acquired outfielder Kenny Kelly from the Mariners for infielder Rey Sanchez. A non-reliever? Well, maybe Kelly will convert if he continues to struggle offensively. The former University of Miami quarterback was batting .246 with 13 HR, 37 RBI, 79/29 K/BB and 20 SB in 341 AB for Triple-A Tacoma. Kelly, who cleared waivers a couple of months ago, will join Triple-A Norfolk for now. He doesn't project as a major league regular. If the Mets can unload Sanchez, there is no reason the Brewers can't do the same with EY. ~Bill -

I can certainly understand your position, Geno (and David), but I don't think Jim Powell is an appropriate target. He hates the Mets, no doubt, but it's not because he wants to divert attention from the "FACTS" (which, apparently, are very important; important enough to be capitalized). JP has talked about the press room, the food, the atmosphere, the airplanes, and lots of other things about Shea Stadium that he abhors for as long as I can remember. And really, what's wrong with that? As for the 6,000 fans comment, and the "FACT" that JP called the Mets losers, what's so wrong with that? They've got a huge payroll and yet they are on equal footing with the Crew... is that not a "FACT"? Yes, it might not serve any real purpose to criticize another organization when your own is in such poor shape (the glass house argument, perhaps), but it doesn't make JP a "company tool". He has participated in a chat with BF.net (and was the subject of an interview), he provides minor league coverage on a daily basis, and he is a very good play-by-play announcer who often has valuable insights to share with his listeners. Sure, he can't flat-out rail against the Brewers... but really, who wants to hear that? If you want to hear people airing their grievances with the club, tune into any local talk radio show. If you want intelligent and balanced coverage of the Brewers, listen to Bob and Jim. Simple as that. There are enough people to hate on without grinding your axe on Jim. He's not a tool, and I (for one) am glad he's with the organization. ~Bill -

I hate that horn. The first time I heard that, I almost jumped out of the chair I was sitting in... yikes. It's very, very loud. And yes, Lindskog has done a fantastic job in less-than-ideal circumstances. He and Robert Portnoy are both great - Indy, not so much (IMHO). It's just a matter of taste, but it's testament to the job that Mike has done. Good call, MassBrew! ~Bill -

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 8, High Desert 5 Daryl Clark went yard in the eighth and the Mavs got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Quakes prevail for the second straight night. High Desert Site Game Summary: Rancho Cucamonga, CA ? Mike Eylward's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes a come-from-behind 8-5 win over the High Desert Mavericks on Sunday night at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. Mavs reliever Aaron Dean took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Dean's first pitch of the inning was fouled off by Jeff Mathis before trouble struck the Mavs right-hander. Dean apparantly strained his right groin on the pitch and was immediately pulled from the game. Mavs reliever Justin Gordon (1-4) was summoned out of the bullpen and was unable to hold the Quakes. After Mathis singled, Nick Gorneault made it 4-3 with an RBI double. After issuing a walk to Justin Turner, Eylward crushed his 10th of the year off the scoreboard in left field to give the Quakes the lead for good. Rancho added unearned runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to increase their lead, thanks to some sloppy Mavs defense. After Quakes reliever David Wolensky (3-3) worked two scoreless frames, the Mavs attempted to rally. Daryl Clark's second home run since returning from Huntsville, and 14th of the year, pulled the Mavs to within two, at 7-5 in the eighth inning. Trailing 8-5 in the ninth, Ralph Santana and Ozzie Chavez each singled to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Chris Morris then flew out to center and Johnny Raburn grounded out to end it, as Richard Thompson picked up his fifth save of the year for the Quakes. The Mavs enjoyed their biggest power outburst of the season, homering four times on the day. Jeremy Frost's fifth of the year, a two-run shot to center field, put the Mavs up 2-0 in the second inning. Chavez picked up the Mavs' first inside-the-park home run of the year with a fly ball to deep right-center field to lead off the third. Right fielder Jason Aspito fell down on the track while trying to play the hop off the wall, giving Chavez his second homer of the year. Leading 3-2 in the fourth, Scott Candelaria picked up his third homer of the year, a solo shot to left field to make it 4-2. Mavs catcher Brian Foster was injured in the bottom of the sixth inning, after taking a hard foul ball off his right shoulder. Foster is day-to-day, but is expected to sit out Monday's game in San Bernardino. Mavs starter Dan Hall worked two innings in his first appearance since missing a turn in the rotation with a sore right shoulder. He allowed two runs on two hits, striking out three men. The Mavs are now 40 games under .500 at 33-73 and just 8-28 in the second half. They continue their ten-game road trip with four straight in San Bernardino against the Inland Empire 66ers, beginning Monday night. Danny Kolb (3-8) throws for the Mavs, while Troy Cate goes for the 66ers. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central) from Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Chattanooga (Reds) 5, Huntsville 0 Nolasco struggles in his Double-A debut; Krynzel gets a day off but pinch-hits; Stars muster only 4 hits... HuntsvilleStars.com Site Summary: July 27, 2003 ? Travis Thompson shackled the Stars? offense, and Chattanooga had Futures Game star Stephen Smitherman back in the lineup. The combination proved deadly, as the Lookouts shut out Huntsville, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bell South Park. The Stars (18-16, 58-44) could retain a share of first place in the Southern League West if Birmingham falls to Mobile tonight. Thompson was not overpowering, just effective. He fanned five and allowed only three hits and one walk over seven shutout innings in his first start against Huntsville this season. Thompson also singled twice, scored a run and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Thompson (2-0) has won both his starts for the Lookouts since his recall from triple-A Louisville. Reliever Kris Keller finished for Chattanooga, tossing the eighth and ninth and giving up just one hit and one walk while fanning one. Smitherman arrived in Chattanooga Saturday and was in the lineup for the series opener, but a 104-degree temperature caused skipper Phillip Wellman to send him home to get some rest. He clearly felt better Sunday afternoon, lining a single, lashing a double and driving home two in a 2-for-4 performance. Lookout Edwin Encarnacion added a single and double, driving in one and scoring another. Dave Nolasco (0-1) made his Stars and double-A debut, allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits and one walk with no strikeouts over five innings. Nolasco?s own error ? he bobbled a sacrifice bunt by Alejandro Diaz with runners at first and second ? sparked the Lookouts? three-run third and led to a pair of unearned runs. Stars lefty Brian Adams gave up one run on two hits while fanning two over two innings of relief, and Ken Ray tossed a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit and striking out one. ?If we make that play on the bunt and get the out at third, it?s a different game,? Stars manager Frank Kremblas said, ?but I give them credit, too. Their starter (Thompson) pitched a good ballgame. He mixed up his pitches well and kept us off-balance.? The Stars and Lookouts play the third of a four-game series Monday night at Bell South Park. Huntsville righty Ben Hendrickson (4-3, 2.86) meets Lookouts right-hander Josh Hall (6-7, 2.85). Game time is 6:15 p.m. CT. The Bill Penney Toyota Pre-game Show starts at 6:00 p.m. CT. Stars baseball can heard on Jammin? 1550 WLOR, ESPN 1450 WTKI and at www.huntsvillestars.com. Durham (Devil Rays) 9, Indianapolis 3 Coco with a rough outing; every Indian hitter with one hit except for Jason Conti; Richard Paz goes 1-for-3; John Foster throws four perfect innings... IndyIndians.com Game Summary: DURHAM, N.C. -- One night after scoring 16 runs on 19 hits, the host Durham Bulls went at it again handing the Indianapolis Indians a 9-3 defeat Sunday. The Bulls have won all three of the first four games of the series, and have won eight straight over the Indians at Durham Bulls Athletic Park dating back to last June 26. For the second straight night, the first-place Bulls (56-48) scored seven runs in the third inning. The outburst broke open a 2-2 game as the Bulls won for the 18th time in their last 22 home games. With one out, Jason Smith belted a two-run homer to straight-away center field to give Durham the lead for good. Jorge Cantu doubled in the next run before Hector Ortiz delivered a two-run double to make it 7-2. Jason Tyner tripled in Ortiz with the eighth Bulls run. Ryan Jackson, the 10th man to bat in the inning, belted his second double of the game, and fourth in the last two games, to make it 9-2. All nine Durham runs came against Tribe starter Pasqual Coco (8-6) who allowed 13 baserunners on 10 hits, two walks and a hit batsman in three innings. The depleted Indians pitching staff, which saw five hurlers take the mound Saturday, got a big boost from reliever John Foster. Foster took over in the fourth and worked four perfect innings striking out six. Indianapolis (46-60) had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Jason Conti reached base on a wild third strike to open the game. After being balked to second, Conti scored on a single by Mark Smith. Cody McKay followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0. Smith added a run-scoring ground out in the fifth to pick up a second RBI in the game. Jeff Liefer tied the game in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer, his sixth of the year, after Jackson's first double of the night. Delvin James (4-6) earned the win working five innings. The Indians and Bulls wrap up the series Monday night. David Manning (5-7, 4.70) will face Carlos Reyes (9-1, 1.67). The Indians return to Victory Field Tuesday where they will play their final 22 home games of the season in a 33-day span. If Jamie Moyer tried out for a big league club, he wouldn't get past the first cut. That says a lot about the power of scouting and the perception of what a player needs in order to succeed. And don't count Lee out just yet. He deserved the promotion, and he deserves to start every fifth day for at least a couple months. If he fails, so be it... cut him loose or don't resign him. But to say that he's a lost cause after only a few admittedly terrible starts is very shortsighted. ~Bill -

Tonight's game was utterly pitiful. The offense finally put together some prolonged rallies and the pitching staff made the Rockies look like the '27 Yankees. The bullpen is in turmoil and Royce Clayton continues to suck the life out of the bottom of the order. This team is looking more and more like that of 2002, minus a few strikeouts. And to put it bluntly, that's not good... nor should it be acceptable. They need to start righting the ship, and fast, if they want to salvage a second half they can build off of. ~Bill -
