  1. You know what, kiddos? Vizco is back. This guy has amazing stuff. That slider is unhittable. We're going to be darned happy that Melvin (and Yost) had patience with him. Kudos, Luis! ~Bill
  2. Vizcaino is throwing the ball a lot better... I dare say a lot better than DeJean, too. John Foster has been more than solid in limited opportunities. Estrella is pretty automatic. Leskanic is, too, as long as he can pitch. That's three pitchers, more than we needed tonight... and the 3 don't include DeJean. He's a good pitcher... but he's not pitching well right now, or for that matter, the entire season. The week he won the award he still wasn't throwing the ball that well... which he was the first one to tell us. It would be better for him, the team, and my blood pressure to put him into non-critical game situations so that he can work on his stuff without jeopardizing victories. As silly as it sounds, I'd much rather have Vizco in a game right now than DeJean. Foster, Kolb, Estrella, and Leskanic, too. And against lefties, throw in De Lo. And at least Kieschnick can keep the ball in the park... Sorry for venting... I'm done for the night, I promise http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif. ~Bill
  3. The last two losses are pretty tough to take. I know it doesn't really matter, but this is the kind of thing that makes being a fan of a losing club difficult. When the team "battles" back and takes the lead against Billy ***** Wagner, you just can't blow the game. It just can't happen. Argh. Just needed to vent, ~Bill
  4. Ok, I'll try again: Don't panic, we've got Leskanic! Hopefully this time it works. ~Bill EDIT: Holy @#%$! That didn't work... I thought that was gone. What the hell is Yost thinking? Jeez... I know the Brewers aren't going to win that many games this year, and I know that this game is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but I can't help but get pissed off at this @#%$. Where in Houston is Curtis Leskanic?!?!
  5. This is where the lack of bench depth really hurts us. Enrique Cruz is the only hitter left available... and Kieschnick, obviously. We don't have another catcher should Osik get hurt (#2, Eddie, is gone, and #3, Ginter, is gone) and we might have to use Cruz if Helms' ankle gives him problems. And we don't even have Glendon Rusch anymore to pinch hit or pinch run. This needs to be resolve quickly or it's going to be very ugly. ~Bill
  6. How many more blown saves are we going to allow? Helms takes one from Wagner off his foot and DeJean gives up a bomb to Geoff "I am really very bad, if you want to know the truth" Blum. Pitiful. ~Bill
  7. Don't panic, we've got Leskanic! Err, wait. My bad. Proceed with panicking. ~Bill
  8. Holy @#%$! EY just went yard again against Billy Wagner. Wow. ~Bill
  9. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a lot of your evaluations seemed to say "incredibly" or "on fire" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Um, actually only two. I said Estrella was pitching incredibly well and Leskanic is on fire. Do you care to dispute those observations? I feel pretty confident making those assessments. You listed 5 Dodgers' pitchers... the Brewers have 7/8 relievers. Moreover, the Dodgers get consistently-strong starting pitching and thus throw less innings. It's not really a fair comparison. That said, I'll take Estrella, Leskanic, De Los Santos, and DeJean before Shuey, Quantrill, Mota, and Martin. It's not exactly fair to compare any of the Brewers' pitchers to Gagne. And the Vizcaino of last year is the best of the non-Gagne bunch. Throw in Kolb, who has pitched well, Foster, who has done the same, and Kieschnick, who can eat up innings and hit better than any other pitcher in the league, and you've got yourself a solid bullpen. On a team without the money to splurge on anything other than necessities, the bullpen should be the last of our concerns. Starting pitching, yes. Hitting, yes. But relievers? Not really. ~Bill
  10. Kolb is decent-to-above-average, Vizcaino is showing improvement (and when he's at his best, he's nearly unhittable), De Los Santos is very good against left-handers, John Foster has pitched well, Kieschnick can eat up innings and is generally effective, Leskanic is on fire and pretty much "game over" if he gets it over the plate, Estrella is a groundball machine and is throwing incredibly well, and DeJean is struggling but above-average when he's on his game. I don't think the bullpen is the problem. ~Bill
  11. Keith Ginter in the lineup again? Life is good. ~Bill
  12. Philly probably shouldn't count as turf... I think it's some sort of hybrid between real grass and plastic stuff. Everybody seems to love playing on it... it's like a perfectly manicured "real" field without the knee-buckling hardness of astroturf. Hopefully the last bastions of artificialness will soon be gone... you can build a fast track by cutting the grass real short and it's so much better for the players. ~Bill
  13. Jeez, the mud sure is a-slingin' tonight. You'd think the tone of the discussion would be a little brighter after sweeps of the [hated] Twinkies and Cubbies but some of you are just plain cranky. :D The fundamental disagreement seems to be over a simple but at the same time difficult question: Is one willing to sacrifice this year's on-the-field product to provide benefits for the future?. Obviously, the depth of the sacrifice and the amount of benefit for the future are important to this discussion... but in general, we have two opposing camps: those that want to "fire sell" anything we can get value for and those that want to keep the nucleus of this year's team together and add components to it. The one thing that both sides can agree on is that trading this year's players for younger, higher-ceiling guys that are ready to play now would be a good idea. Unfortunately, the kind of players we're going to get in trades are probably at least 1 year away and sometimes 2-4 years away. The closer a guy is to the big leagues, the less likely he is to be a "good"/top prospect. Soooo... do we swap players like Sexson and Jenkins for prospects and fill in the holes on this year's club with AAA players or do we hang on to our core of guys and build around them? That's the fundamental conundrum that we (and Melvin/the organization) face. There is no easy answer... so the best we can do is be civil about it and respect the opinions of others. Cool? Peacemakin', ~Bill
  14. Right after a game-winning home run and amidst of a torrid hot streak it's difficult to objectively weigh the pros and cons of trading a guy. I think cooler heads will prevail in the next couple days, assuming Jenkins doesn't hit 5 more bombs (which isn't out of the question). I'm savoring the win... that was sweet. ~Bill
  15. "What we lack in talent and ability we make up for in heart and ability," said manager Ned Yost. "That's the best thing about this club." Yikes. I'm not even sure what that means, but it can't be good. I guess it's alright for the manager to feel that way but I sincerely hope that Doug Melvin is laughing about it, too. ~Bill
  16. FYI, the game's on WGN for those with access to a TV and Cable. I'm going to take a nice long lunch and hopefully catch a few innings. ~Bill
  17. Jeez, talk about no respect... from the MilwaukeeBrewers.com home page: Ben Sheets left the game staring down a 5-1 hole, but the Brewers battled back against the Cubs bullpen to tie the game at 5-5 in the seventh. Matt Ginter homered to lead off the four-run rally. You can watch the game on MLB.TV , listen on Gameday Audio, or follow along on Gameday. Sheesh, you'd think they could at least get his name right. ~Bill
  18. EDDIE!!!! Legging out a triple!?!? Scoring on the play after an error?!?! Get that man some Oxygen!!!! This game went from very disappointing to very, very fun. I'm stoked. ~Bill
  19. BANG!!! Jenkins is en fuego... can you say "All Star"? I couldn't before but I'm starting to learn http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif. Gotta love breaking the Cubbies' hearts... now we just have to have DeJean or Estrella or someone hold down the fort in the bottom of the inning. ~Bill
  20. Wow. Three good sliders and one wasted waaay outside. That's how you pitch Sammy. High fastballs middle-in is not. For having 13 pitchers, Yost sure seems to have a hard time handling them. I can't blame him for putting Kolb in but he was forced to use Leskanic for only an inning and De Lo for more than he's good for. BANG. Kieschnick jerked one out!!! Yeees! ~Bill
  21. What does Ginter have to do to get some playing time? He pinch hits in the #9 spot and hits a home run. Clayton makes the last out of the inning so the #9 spot is due up to start the eighth. Why not keep him in the game and insert the pitcher in for Clayton? Now, we've used our best two pinch hitters (VW and Ginter) and the pitcher's spot is due to leadoff the next inning. That means either Cruz or Kieshnick will hit, probably... What's up with that? ~Bill
  22. AB #2: - Curveball, Whiff - Curveball, Whiff - Curveball, Checked His Swing - Curveball, Foul Tipped into Dirt - Curveball, Struck Out Looking Gotta love Jose K. If curveballs were illegal, he'd lead the league in hitting. ~Bill
  23. Three long balls in two innings, including the longest home run I've ever seen by Sosa and one by the pitcher? Beautiful. Good bye, Luis. You'll look real pretty in an Indianapolis jersey. ~Bill
  24. This is utterly embarrasing. ~Bill
  25. Man, forget Kerry Wood... we've got Matt Ford!!! What a fantastic few innings... he just made Grudzy and Gonzalez look foolish. I think we've found ourselves a fourth starter... just add Burba and we've got ourselves a rotation! ~Bill
