  1. High Desert 6, Inland Empire (Mariners) 5 Heck of an exciting game tonight. The Mavs snap a 7-game losing streak with only their second win of July. The tying run got to third base in the ninth on a weird fielder's choice play but Aaron Dean got out of it. The win also brings to an end the Mavs' 7-game home losing streak. On "50 cent Feast Night", the hometown fans finally got something to cheer about in Adelanto. Congrats, HD! Details to follow, I'm sure. ~Bill
  2. From Tom Haudricourt's Most Recent "Notes" Column: Good to see some coverage in the paper. Kudos, Tom! ~Bill
  3. Darren Sutton just asserted that Matt Stairs and Lenny Harris were not part of the reason for last year's 106-loss meltdown. Hmmm. Bill Schroeder agreed, citing veteran leadership and the ability of Harris to keep everyone in the clubhouse loose. Hmmm. I have to admit that, like most things that these two say, I was not buying it. Taking a look at their stats from last year, however, I was pleasantly surprised: Matt Stairs' 2002 - .244 / .349 / .478 / 16 HR / 41 RBI / 13.3 VORP Lenny Harris' 2002 - .305 / .355 / .411 / 3 HR / 17 RBI / 10.9 VORP Interesting. Both were double-digit positive contributors in terms of Value Over Replacement Players. I guess the common sentiment is that both of these guys are bad... and you can make a case for that. But really, they both had at least mediocre 2003 seasons. I'm sure that neither Darren nor Bill were aware of these numbers when they made those statements but I think it's fair to say that they were correct. Thoughts? ~Bill
  4. I'm glad to see you've escaped the dark side http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif. I think you'll find the Brewers to be a fine organization and we're happy to have you! Welcome! ~Bill
  5. LOL. I put in a question about Chad Petty but he didn't get to it. Maybe next time... this Jim guy seems to be a favorite, though http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif. ~Bill
  6. Hey, Friday - LHP Derek Lee Saturday - RHP Wes Obermueller Sunday - LHP Doug Davis That's pretty crazy. All three weekend starters were not with Indy a month ago and two were not even with the organization. At least the Indians' fans are getting to see some new faces. ~Bill
  7. http://www.radioalice.com/gallery/images/duct1.jpg We tried this with Bob Hamelin, but it didn't work. ~Bill
  8. Wow, that was unexpected, no? He could have helped out in High Desert... not sure what's up with that. What does this mean for Mr. Parra's future? ~Bill
  9. This isn't really all that related to the game, but I don't want to clutter up the board with a new topic. If you've got cable, or I believe satellite, MLB Extra Innings is doing a free preview. I bought the package last year but money was tight this season and I couldn't afford it... just flipping from channel to channel tonight, I can't believe I've made it the whole year without it. So, if you aren't a subscriber, go check it out. BoSox-Jays, As-Twins, and a bunch of other sweet games tonight. That's all I got. ~Bill
  10. Wow, that is awesome. Patrick, you should try to get a copy of that issue of the paper from them. Framing that little section and putting it on your wall would be a nice way to remember your first taste of the big time http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif. Congrats! ~Bill
  11. MassBrew, I couldn't get the Missoula feed to come in, either. I tried it on Tuesday, FWIW. Might give it another shot tonight... gotta listen to Captain Lou! ~Bill
  12. Captain Lou's average is down to .430 and he didn't draw a walk. What's going on?!? Release the guy!!! ~Bill
  13. Line Score: R H E ------------------------------------- Helena (Brewers) 4 9 5 Missoula (Diamondbacks) 7 8 3 Helena Site Summary: Helena's Fielding Woes Continue Helena's fielding troubles continued Wendsday night at Lindborgg Cregg field in Missoula, as the Brewers fell to the Osprey 7-4. Helena commitied five errors, and allowed six unearned runs. Lou Palmisano singled in his first at bat to extend his hit streak to 18. Vinniny Rottino had two hits in four at bats. Helena managed to scatter nine hits, however Rottino was the only Brewer with a multiple hit game. Judd Richardson started for the Brewers pitching only 2/3rds of an inning while giving up three runs on five walks. Kenny Durost picked up his first loss of the season giving up four runs in four and a thrid innings. Missoula and Helena go back at it tommorrow in Missoula as it's a twin billing.
  14. Stars win 8-7. Brian Adams picked up the win in relief of Liriano (who didn't pitch very well). Matt Parker picked up his sixth save. Corey Hart's hot hitting continued. R H E ------------------ Stars 8 14 1 Bears 7 10 3 Stars improve to 13-10, a half game back of first. The Bears drop to 12-11. Details later, I'm sure. Good game, ~Bill
  15. I know, the reason he sticks out is that most of the winners have gone on to be solid professionals. He was one of the few (perhaps the only one) that was able to make it to the pinnacle of college baseball without the skills needed to succeed in the pros. That's a compliment to him, I guess, more than anything. I can't believe Kiesch didn't win it either of his big years... seems like he won everything else. ~Bill
  16. LMAO, that's the best one yet, Brian! ~Bill
  17. Here's the whole list: Golden Spikes Award Winners 2003 Rickie Weeks - Southern 2002 Khalil Greene - Clemson 2001 Mark Prior - Southern California 2000 Kip Bouknight - South Carolina 1999 Jason Jennings - Baylor 1998 Pat Burrell - Miami 1997 J.D. Drew - Florida State 1996 Travis Lee - San Diego State 1995 Mark Kotsay - Cal State Fullerton 1994 Jason Varitek - Georgia Tech 1993 Darren Dreifort - Wichita State 1992 Phil Nevin - Cal State Fullerton 1991 Mike Kelly - Arizona State 1990 Alex Fernandez - Miami-Dade South 1989 Ben McDonald - Louisiana State 1988 Robin Ventura - Oklahoma State 1987 Jim Abbott - Michigan 1986 Mike Loynd - Florida State 1985 Will Clark - Mississippi State 1984 Oddibe McDowell - Arizona State 1983 Dave Magadan - Alabama 1982 Augie Schmidt - New Orleans 1981 Mike Fuentes - Florida State 1980 Terry Francona - Arizona 1979 Tim Wallach - Cal State Fullerton 1978 Bob Horner - Arizona State Just about all of those guys saw significant time in the bigs and quite a few were very good ballplayers. Kip Bouknight really sticks out, though... and not in a good way. ~Bill
  18. I dig it. I'm just hoping that, unlike that picture, Palmisano has feet. Those would probably be helpful. ~Bill
  19. Lou needs a fan club. And a nickname. Get to it, ~Bill
  20. Peter Gammons should be baseball's next commish. That's all, ~Bill PS: Oh, yeah... Free Ginter!
  21. Mavs got rocked tonight, 10-1. 8 walks, 4 hit batters, and 177 pitches for the Mavs in 8 innings. Yikes. On the other hand, Visalia didn't walk anyone. Yikes again. This one was ugly, ~Bill
  22. Yeah, last year was sweet, too. I guess I just came in with really low expectations this year... and being at the game last year, it is a different experience. Mike Scioscia flat-out out-managed Dusty Baker. Sure, Dusty couldn't have expected that Gagne and Wagner would struggle but Scioscia setup the matchups he wanted and it paid off. Kudos to Hank Blalock for a great debut... this kid is awesome and it was fitting for him to bust onto the national scene with a game-winning bomb. Garret Anderson should be MVP... he played a fantastic game. I was expecting to be underwhelmed but this was one of the best games of any kind I've seen all year. Wanna bet Bud doesn't get any credit, nonetheless? ~Bill
  23. Ok, I'm sold. I don't care if it counts... this time it's GOOD!!! What a game. This is what an All-Star game is supposed to be like. WHOA, ~Bill
  24. What's the over-under on whether a drunken Chicago redneck storms the field at some point during the festivities? http://ca.yimg.com/i/ca/cp/20020920/2416762909.jpg ~Bill
  25. There MassBrew, you scooped me this time (but only by a minute) http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif. It gets rough listening to the Mavs... I really hope they get some help ASAP. ~Bill
