  1. Vary your intensities when you run. Some high intensity or sprint training will help with speed and actually improve your lung capacity for distance running too. Just don't do any high intensity training the day before games. Long, low pace runs the days before games and high intensity days the day after games. Your legs will be sore trying to do both but that might help minimize that.
  2. Success. Captain obvious here, but taking one of the next two would be super.
  3. Success. Captain obvious here, but taking one of the next two would be super.
  4. Is this during your cut? Heavy lifting is the last thing you should remove...Keep lifting heavy so your body has a need to keep the muscle. You want to lose fat, not weight.
  5. No disdain, just pointing out that you can be perfectly healthy while eating meat. Like I said in my first post on the topic, if it's out of personal preference, then cool. But the idea that meat is anywhere in the top 10 reasons of people being unhealthy or nutrient deficient is untrue. Out of curiosity, if you don't mind, how many grams of protein are you getting regularly? What are some of your main sources?
  6. People would be amazed how "healthy" they would be if they'd just eat a balanced diet of the appropriate amount of calories and exercise a little. Every concern in this thread regarding meat can be solved without the removal of meat and the protein it provides. Inadequate fiber and calcium? Broccoli and dairy. I don't know of one nutritionist that I respect that would advise against meat. ESPECIALLY in the context of weight loss, advising against meat is a fast track to muscle loss and metabolism destruction. That's my biggest issue with a no meat diet, how are you getting enough protein? I bet 98% of the people in this thread or reading it that have a goal of weight loss are not getting enough protein daily. And we should take away the easiest source of that? Yikes. I have nearly 30 clients and 100% of them came to me with inadequate protein intakes. Great points Louis. TLB, exercise would do more for your health than stressing over which red meat source.
  7. If you prefer not to eat it for personal reasons, that's fine. But meat is not "unhealthy." This is classic magic pill stuff right here. Inhibiting the absorbtion of dietary fat? Not sure why you'd want to do that? Healthy fats are essential for heart and brain function, energy, fat loss, etc etc. The only magic pill is eating the right amount of macronutrients. Nothing personal Schlitz! Regarding hydroxycut or other thermogenic fat burners. Someone mentioned it a page back but the main benefit these are going to provide is energy, specifically pre work out. If you don't mind the price then great, but the main ingredient that works in most of them is the caffeine(coffee). As far as actual fat burning, the best ones boost your metabolic rate by 10% tops. Meaning you burn about an extra 200 calories a day. At that rate it would take almost 3 weeks to burn an extra pound. In other words, they don't do much for actual weight loss.
  8. It's really not a big deal at all which of Marcum, Wolf, or Narveson pitch 3rd.
  9. Wow, is this true? I didn't know this. This makes Braun that much more believable. Absolutely. This plays right into why I was already believing Braun after his press conference. If this is true, it leaves zero doubt in my mind he's innocent. My line of thinking is one I don't see many people talking about. In my line of work I am familiar with testosterone and it's effect on the body and performance. What I've been saying all along is that he looks innocent just on the basis that this was a one time thing. Reason being is that testosterone has to be present for a long period of time- weeks, months- for it to have an effect on performance. Elevated testosterone make muscle and strength gaining easier, but it doesn't magically happen. You can't drink a red bull-esque testosterone drink and boom, Ryan Braun's bat speed. That said, in order for him to be guilty there are only two plausible scenarios. One is that he was taking it consistently but had a masking agent that the MLB didn't know about. Seems unlikely, because how/why did his masking agent suddenly fail if it had helped him pass tests in the past? He surely didn't forget to take it, especially if he was aware of testing around play off time. And again, if you believe he cheated you really have to believe he's been cheating his entire career. He hasn't changed much at all from the time he entered the league. His body size and more importantly stats have been pretty much the same since entering the league. The long winded point I'm trying to make is that a short term boost in testosterone means nothing. He'd have to be taking it long term for it to have an effect. Why on earth wouldn't he abort that going into the playoffs if there was something to it? It would only take 3-4 weeks to restore normal testosterone ratios and the Brewers knew long before October 1st that they would be present in the playoffs and pee tests were right around the corner. Let's look at the other option. Say I'm wrong and there is a drug out there that gives instant and short term spiked test levels. Do we really think Braun is dumb enough to risk taking those if he's aware of playoff drug tests? I don't think this is realistic regardless. I can't imagine a PED that would short term elevate a guy's testosterone and make him better at baseball that day. Again, long term elevated testosterone would lead to strength gain. Short term would probably lead to more erections. Finally, if Braun was really on something that spiked his testosterone higher than the league has ever seen before, he'd simply be a bigger human being. With how hard he works there would be no avoiding extra muscle mass. Some say he gained 15-20 lbs going into last year, but I don't see any noticeable or abnormal changes to his body that would be a red flag at all. Braun's power comes from his god like core strength, not McGwire like forearms. Oh yeah, long term elevated test leads to hair loss. Moral of the story, Braun's cabbage is way too pretty for him to be a juicer.
  10. I will train one Brewerfan.netter for half price my current(already reasonable) rates. Private message me.
  11. Hhaha "e-standards." Nope, I think I've dated cuter girls, and see cuter girls around Milwaukee every weekend. Her body is great though, no denying that.
  12. This is SCREAMING for the easy response. But I'm going to take the high road.... and let someone else say it... PLEASE speak your mind 20fry.
  13. Her face isn't even that attractive to me.
  14. Especially for your goal. Short sprints are wayyyy better for body composition than distance cardio. Danny touched on it a page back about intensity when lifting and he's absolutely right. The more intense your workout, lifting or cardio, the greater the effects on your metabolism AFTER the workout.
  15. I'll be playing at Uhlein on Wed or Thurs nights I believe. My friend is really good and is throwing the team together, I am not good but should be fun and quality cardio. I hate cardio so making it fun will be cool. Should be fun, I have no skill dribbling but I will shoot some rockets. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Houlie, in most cases building muscle and losing fat at the same time are impossible. You need a surplus of calories to build muscle and a deficit of calories to burn fat. The good news for you is that when weight training is introduced to a beginner or someone who hasn't been lifting for a while there is a period of time there where you may be able to accomplish both at the same time. The stress of the weights is so great that the body overcompensates some to allow you to meet the new demands being placed on it. So in this scenario you can either cut calories and cut fat, while still building a little muscle during this phase. OR you can eat to build a little muscle and make some really nice progress while in this phase. I strongly recommend the latter to almost anyone, as building muscle is much harder than cutting fat. Maybe not harder, but a slower process. An advanced lifter had a great month if he gains 4 pounds of muscle(not weight, muscle). You can safely lose fat faster than that. As for lifting. It's very hard to give general advice, as the juggling of variables to bring everything together is pretty much why I have a job. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif But in general, 4x a week is awesome, 30-45 mins is plenty. I'd shoot for one compound lift a day and do it first. If you can find your one rep max SAFELY I'd do that and work between 75-95% of that number for anywhere between 8 and 1 reps. Or take a weight you can do for 3x5 and continue to add 5-10 pounds every week. The reason you test is because if you aren't lifting a high enough percentage of your max strength then you aren't doing anything to force the body to adapt, you won't get stronger and your body won't change. Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, Barbell Row. After that I'd do 2-5 extra lifts in a lower rep range, say 2-3 sets for 6-12 reps. Sorry, both of those answers were probably longer than necessary, I'm 3 cups of coffee in. If you want a program designed specifically for you and your goals I could write you one and walk you through what you need to be doing. Better yet a few sessions to teach you how to safely do the movements! PS what night do you play indoor? I'm entering my first league, I am not good at soccer, we might need more guys!
  17. Danny, I agree with what you just said. They key detail is the hypocaloric environment. A can of coke and a bowl of broccoli will effect the body in different ways, I agree. And with the broccoli you get the added benefits of the nutrients and feeling full, which help a diet for obvious reasons. The overall point I'm getting at though is that no food will make you fat or make you hold fat when the body is in a caloric deficit. Those calories, whether from the soda or the vegetable, are burned as fuel before they get a chance to be stored as fat. Fat is only stored if a surplus of calories are present. Otherwise the body uses the calories for energy. Any hormonal response is negated by the cumulative effect of the overall balance of calories. I understand your stance on ketogenic diet, I've toyed with them myself before. Not all people enjoy being in ketosis though. I personally run much better on carbs. I feel better, my workouts are better, I'm building muscle and not gaining fat. I believe in a balanced diet that keys on hitting macronutrient and essentially calorie totals. I give my body just enough energy to run optimally with a slight surplus to build muscle. If and when I cut weight I do the exact same thing except reduce calories to a slight deficit instead of a surplus. It works amazing for me and I advise the same for my clients. With that said, I encourage anyone here to try a keto diet if you are curious about it. I don't disagree with their merits, I just know first hand there are alternatives to people who enjoy carbs and/or want more flexibility.
  18. Yes intra, I'd take with water. If you want to take gatorade I'd take it before you workout, within an hour of your workout, maybe even with your prewo drink. And yeah the NO is fine. I usually just drink coffee but I've heard good things about white flood, how do you like it?
  19. Basically if you are trying to lose weight, you want to do everything in your control to ensure that weight lost is from fat and not muscle. Xtend can help with that, it's basically a fast acting protein that spares muscle. It can help you recover faster/get less sore. No supplements are magic, a lot of them are crap, but that's one of the few that at least serves a purpose. Sound diet and training are far more important than any supplement. Sugar is not stored in your body any more than broccoli would be. The entire equation depends on calories in vs calories out. Everyone has a maintenance level of calories, a number of calories that if consumed in a given day you will stay the same weight. This number exists regardless of what you do throughout the day. If you sit on the couch all day, your body still burns x number of calories just to keep you alive. Working out increases this number, since you are using more energy(calories). If you eat above that number you are hypercaloric, or have a surplus of calories. Those extra calories will be stored by the body, most likely as fat tissue as potential energy(that's what fat is). On the opposite end, if you eat below that number you are hypocaloric. In that scenario your body has to burn potential energy to keep you alive. Fat stores or muscle are burned as calories to fill the gap. In the simplest sense, being hypocaloric is the only thing needed to lose weight. Your body WILL burn fat in the absence of enough maintenance calories. A high fat, low carb keto diet like danny uses is just a type of diet. It doesn't change the scientific facts and the mechanisms in place. It still comes back to calories in vs calories out.
