  1. I just don't believe it's a physical issue. He's still hitting 94 on his fastball when he wants to, so I really doubt he has an injury. I realize fastball speed alone doesn't indicate whether a pitcher is injured or not, but it's usually a preety good indicator. He's struggling with control. Could be mechanics, could be he just doesn't have it right now. Yo needs to throw his curve for strikes anywhere in the count and he hasn't been able to do that. Sending him to Nashville could be the answer, but that depends what the problem is. I'm sure they've studied this, and if his mechanics haven't changed, and he's not tipping pitches...then it may do him some good to go down to Nashville and work on his control for a couple starts.
  2. Sorry OT, but I'm shocked more athletes don't pull a Ray Allen and handle their own deals. Why not pay a much smaller one time fee to have an attorney review the contract, rather than pay a significant on-going percentage to an agent?
  3. Even casual fans I have talked to seem to accept the fact Prince is leaving, and understand the Brewers can't afford to sign every player to a mega-deal. And they don't fault Prince for wanting a mega-contract. Sure, there's always a minority who complain whenever an athlete leaves for more money. This is a non-story in my opinion.
  4. Can't see the game tonight, just wondering what happened to Narvy? Was he just off...or maybe tipping pitches? Hey, I knew he was due for a star like this, just wondering how/why he giot shelled?
  5. Again, like it or not, baseball has been around for over 100 years and there ARE unwritten rules. you may not like it, or acknowledge that, but managers, coached, and players do. Yes, many of them may seem stupid. If you pose after hitting a HR, you'll probably get plunked at some point. With that said, 5th inning???? Are you kidding? You don't steal late in the game with a big lead (although LATE and BIG are subjective.) 5th inning all bets are off. I think Quade DOES need to find a book.
  6. Besides, this other #2 hitter isn't theoretical. It's Corey Hart. Higher OBP, and much higher slugging. I rather have Corey Hart getting an extra AB than Gomez.
  7. I agree. You get late in the game, and nobody on the Brewers bench even remotely scares anyone. I would do this today, and maybe at some point this season you can bring Gamel up. But he needs his ABs now. They tried to catch lightning ina bottle with Almonte, and it didn't work. I don't even have a big problem with giving him a chance after how he performed in spring, but the time has come to move on.
  8. Assuming they can extend both Greinke and mArcum, where does that leave Yo? Without studying the dollars involved, I just find it hard to believe the Brewers could afford 4 huge contracts along with a couple fairly expensive contracts for Weeks and Hart. I understand when Prince leaves it frees up $15MM, but I don't see how they can keep the total payroll under $100MM if they sign all three pitchers?
  9. i would like to see Katin, but that's REALLY wishful thinking.
  10. I agree, but I think those roles can be changed during a series, or even a game. The key is to explain this to the bullpen beforehand. For example, before the series at home, RRR could go to Loe (or Whomever) and let him know he could be used in a save situation. I was concerned about Axford coming into the season. Probably my #3 concern after defense and Betancourt. Not because I didn't trust Axford, it's that I don't really trust many closers- especially one who's only done it for less than one season.
  11. My lineup is based partly on reality (Weeks IS going to stay in lead-off spot like it or not): Weeks Hart Braun Fielder McGehee Lucroy Betancourt Morgan/Gomez strict platoon Dillard I think they're dead set on Weeks leading off, and McGehee hitting 5th. For that matter, the idea of flipping Braun/Fielder is dead. So the biggest question is the #2 spot. Hart is the best hitter remaining, so he gets the spot. I don't buy bunting ability, stealing bases, etc. as a reason for any player to hit 2nd. Especially with a guy like gomez who's a lousy bunter anyhow. I want my 5 best hitters 1-5 in the lineup. Then I like Lucroy hitting 6th. Sure, he's hot now. But even last year I liked his approach as a rookie, certainly better than Betancourt or Gomez. Finally, I like Morgan/Gomez in the 8 hole. If they can get on, Weeks and Hart have a chance to drive them in. Nice speed ahead of them on the basepaths.
  12. Well, first game of Bucs series there's Gomez back in the line-up vs a RHP- and batting 2nd. Impossible to prove, but I would bet this is more of a Melvin decision that Roenicke. RRR probably doesn't have too much of a problem with it, or I'm sure he would tell Melvin he's going with a strict platoon. My guess is he's 50/50 on it, so he 's going along with Melvin's wishes this early in the season. i don't want to sound like Melvin is dictating and RR HAS to do what he says. It's more subtle than that.
  13. I would use this as an excuse to sit Saito for another week or two, make sure he's "right." DL him, send down Stetter. Then you wait and see if any other injuries occur. You can also take your time with Parra. That's how I would handle it, kick these decisions down the road a bit and these things usually work themselves out. Green seems obvious to go at some point, but he has been pitching well. Maybe buy him a little more time?
  14. I think Roenicke has it right. There are unwritten rules, whether we agree with them or not. But I don't think a 5 run lead in the 8th is safe in today's game, so all bets are off. Now if he's stealing 3rd in a 11-0 game, that's a different story. Don't ask me why, that's just the way it is.
  15. Why oh why does he have to wear #13!?!?!?!?!
  16. Won't surprise me if Fielder is back to start the season. They could deal Weeks in a package to bring a SP, I know there are serveral teams who would love to have a stick like that playing 2B. Then you add Yo, Wolf, maybe Cappy...catch lightening in a bottle with Rogers and/or Jeffress...who knows maybe they can contend. Not all that different from what happened to the Reds this year. So unless they get what Melvin considers a "fair" deal for Prince, he may want to make one last run with Prince/Braun/McGehee/Hart/maybe Weeks. If it doesn't work, he can still deal him at the deadline. Melvin's said all along they're not in a hurry to deal him, and I believe him. Let's not forget they have some money to spend as well. So you bring in a new Manager, return your line-up, and cross your fingers on the rotation and who knows?
  17. I see Capuano bumping Parra out of the rotation. Parra has actually been very good out of the pen, and Cappy has a string of quality starts. That pushes Stetter back to Nashville. I also see a SP acquired via trade in the rotation, with Rogers and Jeffress starting the year in Nashville to get stretched out. Hopefully they're both in the rotation by the break. Goes without saying, but the roster may look quite different if a trade or two is made.
  18. Maybe I was just in a bad mood or something, but I didn't like it at all. Even the way it was produced, just didn't have the same feel as past seasons. I just felt like the characters were trying to be funny instead of just being funny. But I've seen every episode more than once, so I'm in it for the long haul.
  19. Of all the new shows, The Event looked the most promising to me. Boy was I wrong!!! I'm done after the first episode, it was so hokey! Worse than those bad made for TV disater movies- at lest those have comedic value. I'm giving Apprentice another chance this year. This season is interesting because all the contestants have lost their jobs recently. A little different twist. That Detroit 187 (or whatever) looked like a possibility also but I didnt see the first episode. I don't have HBO, unfortunately, but if anyone has any recs on a good new drama, let us know.
  20. Actually, we're doing the same thing. Not really a 2nd honeymoon, more of a getaway weekend from the kids. Any suggestions for a "classier" type of strip club? I realize that may be a contradiction in terms, but I've heard there are lots of different "levels" of strip clubs in Vegas. Any suggestions on any upper scale clubs where a 40 something couple wouldn't feel out of place?
  21. Sure, but I don't believe that's what happened to Yo this year. It's not because of defense. He simply had too many starts where he got hit hard, and/or walked too many batters. As others have said, he doesn't trust his curve anymore, and that is a devastating weapon for him when he's "on." Plus there have been too many times when he can't locate his fastball. I would need to be convinced that poor defense is the main reaon or even a reason at all for his struggles.
  22. Once again, from the Fangraphs article: After last night, he just barely inched over 3, to 3.05. He is 4th in the league in FIP. You may not value FIP, but his ERA is almost a run higher than his FIP because of the Brewers terrible defense. His BABIP against is .344. It was under.300 for his career before this season. Maybe he doesn't throw enough strikes, but, really, can you blame the guy for trying to strike everyone out on this team? I value FIP, WHIP, SO/BB, all stats are relevant. But I'll throw one one everyone hates- Quality Starts. Yo's QS% is only 50%. There are 26 pitchers in the NL alone over 60%, 10 of them over 75%! I know, I know, QS stat is flawed and open to debate. But it does tell us how many times a SP "did their job." I don't look at this stat, or any stat, in a vacuum. But what I like about QS is that it factors in each individual start and tells you roughly how many starts Yo pitched "well enough to win." In other words, an ace not only pitches lights out in plenty of games, he also minimizes the damge ingames he's "off." Yo has simply been lights out at times, but when he isn't it's hard for him to hang in there and gut out a decent start.
  23. I've been saying it all year. Yo is a #2 and Wolf is a #4- at least on a contending team. So Brewers rotation is a 2,4, and then a bunch of 5s. That's not to say Yo can't develop into an ace, he's just not there yet. As far as shutting him down, it really depends on his arm. If he is hurt or even has a tired arm, he should be shut down immediately. Otherwise, get the innings in.
  24. I just don't see the problem with Gamel riding the pines. So he misses a week or two of starts in Nashville. Will that really have an effect on his development? May as well bring him up now, give him some PHs, and a couple of spot starts. This is different than bringing him up at the beginning or middle of the season and and riding the pines. At this point in the season, I don't see the harm.
  25. I don't buy unemployment and the economy as valid reasons. Rgardess of the unemployment rate, there are hundereds of thousands of people in the metro Cincy area who are gainfully employed. I know the economy is bad, but if you're a real fan, have a job, and can't come up with $20 then that's sad. 15,000 is pathetic.
