I love guys like Mike Fiers. He's the anti Hall of famer---has tremendous and memorable small moments in his career, but overall is just a guy. It's so easy to cheer on guys like this. Scooter gennet's four homer game was a similar deal. It's also cool that both of these guys were drafted deep in the 2009 draft, which on the surface looked like a poor draft. Add in Khris davis, and 2009 was actually a great draft, once you ignore than no one picked in the first 6 rounds even came close to panning out.

I had somewhere earlier today that Yelich has raised his flyball rate from 25% last year to 35% this year. he was a pretty solid groundball hitter with the Marlins, but is moving towards being one of the most prolific flyball hitters in baseball. He's gonna hit 40 homers this year.

I'd love to have Buchholz. He was fantastic last year and would fit in perfectly with the "relievers who can all go 3" philosophy the Brewers seem to be implementing even further -

For the Brewers, it's hard to know the budget flexibility. I saw a piece on theathletic.com that said Stearns was shopping Thames and Alberts to free up some salary for additional adds. If that is indeed true, then we may be close to our limit without either of them moving and maybe 1 or 2 additions away if Thames/Albers are moved... I'm sure the writer would frame the need to trade those two under the label of freeing up salary, but its also just logical that Stearns would want to trade those guys.... I mean, why would the team want to pay for those guys? I suspect there is still payroll room to absorb those two even if they add another 10 million before the end of the offseason. -

I think those of you who think Pina is easily replaceable aren't paying attention to the fact that the Brewers weren't willing to replace him with anyone other than a top tier free agent. They passed on Wilson ramos, for example, TWICE, to keep Pina as the starter. Kratz is 39 years old. he's not part of a future team---but i do think the Brewers view Pina as a future contributer, starting role or no. -
I think Miley and Bucholz are both lookin at Chacin style contracts, and I'm sure the brewers could find 7.5 million for one of them per year. I expect Cabrera/Panik/Harrison and a pitcher like one of those guys. None of these players required taking a stab at early in the offseason, so why not just keep waiting until the prices are at their lowest.

Moose actually sacrificed some power for obp in his 200+ ab's with the Brewers. his batting average basically never changes, but he brought his walk rate up to 1/10 ab's, which is a decent ratio. It's possible that some of his incredibly aggressive approach was a Royals philosophy. I mean, Lo Cain's OBP improved a ton as well.

To me, the problem isn't free agent compensation. i think the players are actually getting much closer to what their true value is on the open market than the drastically inflated salaries of the past. the problem is that the current cba makes it very profitable to keep players in the minors until the super two cutoff point causing players to have to play a whole extra season with their original team, as well as causing them to receive fewer dollars overall in arbitration. The simplest solution to all of this would be that any days in the majors in a given season would count as 1 full year towards arbitration, rather than the convoluted system that currently exists. Another solution could be completely eliminating pre arbitration years, putting all players into the arby process immediately upon arriving in the majors. The owners would never agree to all of that, but If I was the players union, I would focus on getting the younger players paid more so that and getting them to the majors faster, so that their eventual payday in free agency isn't the only way for them to get paid.

The Erceg homer was to left center and just barely cleared the wall. Might have travelled 375 feet. Corey ray almost hit an opposite field homer in his first ab on a terrible swing. It’s clear he’s super strong—- there’s still some obviouspitch selection issues there.

I was at the shuckers game today. Diplan mixes his offspeed stuff really well, but his results should be taken with a grain of salt. The only good hitter on the other team was josh prince! Half kidding. I really enjoyed Troy stokes— he was having a lot of fun and it was obvious. Trent Grisham was the opposite—-he looks lost at the plate. Hiura hits the ball super hard. He looks ready for the majors with the bat. I saw him make some decent snags at 2b, but it was obvious he doesn’t have a great arm.

This seems similar to the o’s signing of Ubaldo Jimenez a couple years ago. Good luck to them. There’s a lot to be concerned about with Cobb, and I’m happy the Brewers are going to (eventually) trust some of their young talent.
