  1. Bush's BB and HR rates were up slightly last year, but otherwise he was almost no different than the previous season. He still has a low walk rate and an excellent K:BB ratio...better than 3:1 in 2007. While I realize Quality Start is a somewhat dubious stat, it is relevant to note that 16 of his 31 starts qualify as QS, while only 9 of Vargas' 23 starts were QS. Also, Vargas had only one game where he lasted beyond the 6th inning. Bush had 10. Of the three, Bush, Vargas, and Cappy, there's more to like about Bush's potential. He has the peripherals to be a solid 2-3 rotation pitcher and a career that surpasses Suppan. If there's only one spot left in the rotation for these three, I'm leaning toward giving it to Bush. I think Capuano is going to be traded. Fear the Chorizo, I have no idea if your analysis is correct, but it sure seems to make a lot of sense! Thanks for that. Good work.
  2. So that suggests he can't pitch from the stretch? Consideringhe was a closer in college you wouldn't think this would be such a big problem.
  3. It seems to overemphasize speed. I don't think Kendall has the same value as Fielder or that Cameron and Weeks are each 5.5-6 times more valuable than Prince.
  4. Ryan Braun!!!! No, just kidding. I'm thinking it's easier to find a corner guy than a ss, so Rottino or Dillon could play 3rd.
  5. I think if Hardy goes down with an extended injury that have to move Hall to ss. I know we are supposed to be sensitive to Hall's feelings, but anyone else at ss would seriously damage the team.
  6. I think Capuano is going to bring the most to the Brewers in a trade. If he gets traded it'll help justify adding Parra to the rotation. Villy has been pitching well, but I bet Ned will feel better with Bush in the rotation and Villy in the pen. With Gallardo on the DL, here's my prediction for Opening Day rotation: Sheets Suppan Parra Bush Villanueva Vargas in the pen, Cappy traded.
  7. I think it would be nice for the Brewers to develop a major league quality catcher.
  8. Probably true, but Hardy played 149 games at ss last year. I realize they will never release Counsell but what an incredible waste of resources and a roster spot just for a backup who will only be needed for 10-12 games. Even if Counsell is a tremendous defensive ss, which I doubt at this stage of his career, it's doubtful his defense expertise would make a bit of difference, given the inevitable small sample size. Especially when you factor in he's now a crappy hitter. Oh well. He's on the team come Opening Day and nothing will change that. I don't see how Rottino makes it as a 2nd catcher. It has to be as a 3rd catcher/utility guy. And there isn't room on the bench for that kind of guy, unless as noted above, Dillon doesn't make the team. There's no way Ned would play his 2nd catcher at say, 3rd base. He always wants a catcher on the bench.. He seems to live in fear of running out catchers.
  9. I don't really care between Munson and Rivera. Munson has somewhat a track record hitting in the majors. I think the smartest move is to DFA Counsell and give his spot to Vinny.
  10. I'd like to see DirecTV stop cramming so many channels down the line. Their compression has deteriorated so much every channel looks like crap. When I first signed on 5 years ago the picture quality really was much better than cable. That's not true anymore. I know we are all just supposed to switch to HD like a lemming to the cliff, but to do that, I'll have to pony up $200+ for a DirecTV HD reciever for each room, plus my monthly charges jump to about 100 bucks, not counting the stiff payment for ExtraInnings. As great as High Def is, I can't justify the cost just to see Mythbusters, stupid reality TV like Project Runway or Plastic Surgery Before and After, and nightly showings of the Star Wars saga on HBO in HD. Maybe the writers' strike exacerbated the problem, but I can't remember a time when TV has been so expensive and yet, so horrible. Honestly, if it weren't for baseball, I'd chuck the whole technology to the garbage.
  11. I think it was this year's Baseball Prospectus that I read Rottino threw out 35% of base stealers last year catching in AAA. That's a refreshing change for a Brewer organization catcher! If I were the manager I'd send Munson to AAA, DFA Counsell (who has negative value, btw) and keep Rivera and Rottino! Dillon, Gross, and one of Kapler/Gwynn/Nix round out the bench.
  12. For a catcher he put up pretty solid offense numbers in the minors: 268/.367/.439. I don't quite understand what took him so long to get to the majors. Maybe he was terrible behind the plate. Still, if he could come have come close to those numbers in the majors he'd have had a fine career as a backup at the very least.
  13. Actaully, a .727 OPS isn't far from average for a 2B. Cal Ripken wasn't very good for most of the last 10 years of his career, yet few complained. great players often stick around for too long. The fans still want to see them play, and the organizations have trouble letting go.
  14. Pretty much everything espn is crappy, but I understand this to an extent. It's hard to predict the ceiling of talented young players. Fielder, Hart, and Braun had great seasons. Prince and Braun had Manny Ramirez/Pujols type seasons. You can't predict improvement on this kind of excellence until they've maintained for a couple seasons.
  15. If you order off mlb.com you just print ticket from the site. I usually print a couple copies, just in case I misplace a set.
  16. Yes!!! Branyan the Manyan! Let Russelove prevail in Brewerland.
  17. It is difficult to imagine how good Cashman would be without a $200 million payroll. The core team of young stars that won all those Championships--Jeter, Posada, Bernie, Pettitte, Rivera--were products of Gene Michael and Bob Watson regimes. Most of the stars Cashman signed--Clemens, ARod, Giambi, Sheffield, Matsui--begged to come to New York. Melvin deserves to be on the list as much as Minaya, O'Dowd, or Byrnes.
  18. I agree Cameron is clearly the better player. I'm just countering the argument there were no CF options out there. But I suppose bringing in Crisp would beg the question why move Hall out of CF? Crisp probably isn't good enough to warrant all the position shifting.
  19. Well they might have tried to wrestle Coco Crisp from the Red Sox. He probably would have come cheap, is a switch hitter, runs well, and plays good defense. Plus it would have meant more playing for Gross.
  20. Sweet! Thank you very much. I owe it all to the little people..
  21. Watch a Ben Sheets complete game on Tivo
  22. I can't believe other teams aren't offering real value in a trade for Bush.
  23. Inman wasn't real impressive in AA last year.
  24. You may be right about Parra, but staying healthy has to be considered part of the skill set when rating prospects. Parra's had 6 years of professional ball and as near as I can tell by looking at his stats, he's stayed healthy all year in one season, 2003.
