  1. So far Rolen has an .818 slugging percentage! a .462 oba! He's freaking Barry Bonds! (in his first 11 at bats anyway...). There's a reasonable chance he is healthy this year. Reasonable for him of course means he could break down at any time. Nevertheless, he started the season on the DL due to a broken finger; it wasn't a back or knee problem or something else that could linger all season. They also recently called up Adam Lind, who was terrorizing pitchers in AAA. It's time he be given the everyday LF job, and replacing Shannon Stewart should not be too daunting of a task. These two could provide quite a boost to the lineup as the summer heats up.
  2. Toronto has a solid rotation. Their offense is good, if somewhat unspectacular. Seems they could go either way, 2nd place or 4th.
  3. OK, well stated. I hope those who are arguing for cooler heads to prevail are correct. Maybe it is they've faced a rash or really good pitchers. It seems someone wrote a new edition of "How to Pitch to the Brewers" in the off season and every team has a dog-eared copy tucked under the pitching coach's arm. The thesis must be, "they'll swing at anything, so give 'em nuthin'." And maybe it's the youthful inexperience of the team's core that makes it tough for them to adjust quickly. It's also true it's been damn cold so far and sluggers can often be slow to get going at the start of the season. Hopefully they can each shake off the rust and get going soon. It's certainly been frustrating waiting for a big break out on the offense...
  4. As long as Counsell keeps his obp around where it's at now I have no problem with him starting a couple times a week. He should be a Sunday regular, and with all the day games after night games going on right now, it makes sense to use him in the middle of the week too.
  5. Sure it's seems convenient to blame the coach. It always does. I doubt Skaalen is encouraging them to take failed approaches in their at bats. He may be the same good coach he's always been, but the players, in love with their individual successes last year, have decided to stop listening and to go their own way. Once you lose your players, you can no longer coach effectively. So it may not be the coaches fault, but a change may be necessary just the same.
  6. Well, in this case one could argue the sample size is so small, the Brewer hitters have made these pitchers look "hot". The guy they faced yesterday had a 5.91 ERA coming in. Aaron Harang is a very good pitcher, but he's been at his best this year in his two starts against the Brewers. Nelson Figueroa has a middling ERA, but he looked like Jake Peavy against the Brewers. Josh Fogg has a 10.80 ERA but gave up just one run in 5 innings against the Brewers.
  7. Well, naivin, I'm not one to blame coaching on everything, but something is terribly wrong, and it's not just "small sample size". Sometimes teams come out of Spring Training and they look horrible and ill prepared in either all facets or just one or two. It's possible the coaching staff was too preoccupied with improving the defense and the offense has suffered as a consequence. At any rate, these guys do not look like major league hitters right now. It is highly unusual for an entire team, especially one this talented and young, to go on such a prolonged hitting slump. Either this is the most over rated offense in history or the coaching approach is all wrong.
  8. I would have rather kept Wise and let Turnbow go over the winter. I think Doug tried to trade him, what with all that work talking him up all winter, but it didn't work out. I'm inclined to agree with you, Mr. QL, Turnbow seems more valuable to the Brewers off the team than on it.
  9. I'll be danged if I can understand that one either. Because he's making $3.2 million and they don't want to pay him to go to another NL team, only to have him strike out the side against the Brewers two weeks later. Remember, this is an offense that can no longer hit......
  10. I hope somebody on the coaching staff is fired soon.
  11. Actually by having the key players on the team making relatively little $$, the Brewers can afford to outbid bigger market teams for average veterans that plug the holes. Suppan, Cameron, and Kendall are worth their contracts because more than likely, if the Brewers didn't offer them such huge contracts the team would be stuck with replacement level or inexperienced kids in these roles. This would contribute to the losing cycle of constant rebuilding instead of trying to win now.
  12. I think you are right. He was really a more talented pitcher than Maddux or Glavine, but couldn't stay as healthy as those guys. That's no knock though, Glavine and Maddux are freaks of nature.
  13. I've always felt this way too. Once they signed Kapler, I figured Gross' days as a Brewer were numbered. He was going to be arbitration eligible after this season, so his price would probably exceed the value of his role on the team. On the other hand, the Rays could always non tender him after the year and BrewCrew could bring him back!
  14. Prince's approach doesn't bother me so much. He's on pace to draw about 110 walks, so he's being fairly patient. He's not going to get much to hit until the rest of the team starts hitting. Braun is hitting about .261 since he sat out a game last week. Not great, but signs of life. Mostly it seems like they've all decided they're the best home run hitters to EVER play the game, so they'll be swinging at every pitch, every at bat. The other teams are laughing at them. Until they decide to smarten up, nothing will change. And yes, if this keeps up into May, Skaalen will be fired.
  15. I agree Weeks is worrisome, but I'm not sure we can take his 2008 offensive performance out of the context of the entire team. No one is hitting! I'm nostalgic for those halcyon days of Butch Wynegar. I'm hopeful the main issue has to do with all the road games so far. Hopefully a few games at home will awaken the bats.
  16. Here's Prince's career line when hitting with two strikes: .199/.262/.418 Here's David Ortiz' career line in similar situation: .207/.304/.378 Here's Ryan Howard's: .187/.266/.388 I'm not knocking what this pitcher said. It's intriguing to get a perspective from an actual player. It's just no one's very good when they're down in the count.
  17. I can that would be helpful! It looks like they do list the feeds here: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageIF.jsp?assetId=3160004
  18. We are fortunate our team has a GM who's not scared to release players, even if they are guaranteed good money. If Turnbow keeps up his less than mediocre performance, he won't make it to June 1 as a Brewer. I expect him to be released after a couple more bad outings.
  19. He's very nearly Jeff Suppan. Someday Dave Bush could be making a lot of money starting baseball games. fwiw, I prefer calling his last start "average" as opposed to mediocre. I suppose technically they mean roughly the same thing, but I view mediocre as something less than average. Like getting a C- or D+ on a test as opposed to a straight C.
  20. Thanks for this info. I wondered why they were doing the dual feeds. I don't have HD yet--I'm tired of everything on DirecTV costing just $10 more. I don't watch TV enough to justify a $90 monthly bill (not counting ExtraInnings!) Maybe the new satellites also explains why the standard def versions of the baseball games look so much better than last year. Lots of the other DirecTV channels still have the same crappy compression artifacts, but the baseball games jump out, looking sharper and brighter. As for the FSN-WI fiasco, I wonder if that isn't really Fox Sports' responsibility. They are the ones who have to negotiate with DirecTV to get their stations on satellite...
  21. This is a tough call. After this week they've all sort of performed equally mediocre. In a perverse way this seems to help Bush stay in the rotation.
  22. On my DirecTv feed the Twins home games are not blacked out. For some reason the away games are. So, many nights during the season I can watch the Twins on FSN North and Brewers on FSN-WI.
  23. Riske is signed for 3 years + a club option for a 4th. Torres, as noted above, is held by a club option for 2009. Bush and Villy are both properties of the Brewers in 2009. So is Cappy, though I am unsure if he ever pitches again. Most likely some or all these guys figure into the mix for 2009 and the Crew pursue a free agent starter or two.
  24. I think this is why we heard Doug talking up Turnbow most of the winter. You know that stuff about Turnbow holding the lead 80% of the time, how they were "content" with him as closer and not worried about signing someone else, etc.
