  1. There are only 24 on the roster right now, so I think the first move you'll see is Stetter or a trade for another reliever. Next move will be a ss. When the ss move is made Josh Wilson will be DFA'd, because there is no way Counsell isn't on this team through the end of the year. I'd like to see Green up for a 3B platoon asap, but I don't see who they would send down. Betancourt probably stays on the team. Counsell and Kotsay are here to stay. Maybe Counsell starts playing more 3rd after the All Star and the team hopes Casey starts hitting.
  2. Kotsay is here to stay. I didn't want him on the team, but as a reserve 4th/5th OF and lefty bat off the bench he has value. No bench player is strong at every aspect of the game unless he's a young kid being worked into a starting role. Kotsay has no power and is a below average corner OF'er. But he also hits for an acceptable batting average and obp, and has shown the ability to put the ball in play in crucial situations. It's hard to find a bench player who can consistently perform this crucial role. For the most part, he can catch the ball hit to his diminishing vicinity. So if he's strictly a fill in and Sunday afternoon stander, then you really aren't losing much putting him out there. As a bench player, batting average matters. The ability to put the ball in play and have a reasonable amount drop may be the most important requirement for a bench player. He's hitting .263 which must be right around the league average. His obp is slightly above the team's obp. Yes he has no power, but the team gets quite a bit of power from their everyday players. What you want from a lefty bench player is a PH late in the game against a tough reliever to keep the rally alive. Kotsay has done all right in that role. As much as I like Boggs, we can't assume he would be as capable.
  3. I would seel it to the highest bidder. If the Yankees or Jeter wanted to bid, I might give them a discount, but it would still need to be a substantial amount of money. That ball belongs to whoever caught it, not Jeter. As every major league player in the game has taught us, you have to think about yourself and your family first.
  4. It pains me to say it, but I'm confident Kotsay is on the team for the rest of the year. As long as he can keep pinging the occasional single through the infield, Ron will be convinced he's the right Gritty Veteran Leader to take the team to the Pot O' Gold. He's raised his average 14 points in the last week. That's all any manager needs to justify his man love for a player.
  5. This was written by one of the few remaining good writers at Baseball Prospectus. A fine article and interesting take on the Brewers.
  6. I didn't hear that, thanks. It's good to know there isn't some underhanded wheeling dealing going on just to play in a meaningless game.
  7. If he wasn't going to the All Star game I think he'd be on the DL today. I'm beginning to suspect they're keeping him off the DL just so he can play in the All Star game. Which is not in the team's best interest. I hope Braun isn't the one making this decision.
  8. Unless McGehee goes on a Corey Hart type hot streak for the rest of the year, I think it's safe to assume he won't be handed the starting 3rd base job is 2012. It's quite possible they'll release him rather than run the risk of losing an arbitration ruling that will be heavily weighted toward his first two seasons.
  9. I haven't been to a lot of games over the years since I live a few hours away. But my experience has always been the opposite of what the rest of you describe. If the roof is open at a hot humid game it's a horrible, stifling experience. The stadium is such a tall narrow cylinder that there is no breeze whatsoever. Even when it's pleasant outside. 4 or 5 years ago my daughter and I went to a game against the Twins. We sat behind the 3rd base dugout. Temps were in the low 90s at the 6:10 game time, and we could hardly breathe. Everyone was soaking in sweat in their seats. Early in the game they closed the roof with a storm moving in. Instantly you could feel a relief. I thought at the time they had AC because once the roof was closed we could feel a rush of cool air from the concession area. The rest of the game was quite pleasant.
  10. Didn't Morgan PH against a lefty last night? So he wasn't good enough to start against a lefty, but in a crucial part of the the game he was good enough to PH against a lefty?
  11. Golly, too bad they don't have a switch hitting OF'er on the 40 man roster who could take Braun's place for a few days.....
  12. X cellent point. It's worth noting that Boggs, although 2 years older than Jay, has had a much better minor league career. The difference is in organizational attitude.
  13. The team's bullpen has a 3.94 ERA, which isn't bad. The problem is some of its best relievers pitch the lowest leverage innings, while its worst reliever pitching in the highest leverage situations. So what you are saying is the manager has to be fired. Probably the most important judgment of a manager is how he manages his pitching staff. If the bullpen is consistently blowing games despite having a "not bad" 3.94 ERA, then the manager must be an incredible idiot and should be replaced right away.
  14. I'd like to know Melvin's criteria for a hiring a manager? As someone else noted on this board, he always seems to be looking for a guy who isn't like the previous guy. His search is reactionary; he doesn't seem to have a clear picture of what he thinks makes a good manager, or what the organizational goals are for a manager.
  15. Yesterday's game had better been it for Loe as a setup. I think Doug's first and possibly only trade will be for a reliable rubber armed reliever. Internally, something will be done with 3rd over the All Start break. If Yuni continues to hit on occasion, he will continue through the season at ss. Gamel and Green are their only real trading chips if they want to get an impact player. To trade either would be a huge mistake. (Unless of course Prince agrees to a reasonable extension in the next couple weeks.)
  16. I think they are going to coast with the team as is until the Break, then re-evaluate.
  17. Betancourt has hit .372 with a .512 slugging over the last two weeks or so. Obviously any player can have a good 2-3 weeks at some random point in the season. Him doing this right now has probably saved his job as starting ss for the foreseeable future. It could be more prudent to improve 3B and just tolerate ss for the rest of this year.
  18. When you put a player out of position in the majors you run a big risk for injury. I don't want Gamel learning the OF on the major league roster.
  19. I'd immediately trade Kotsay for Boggs, and never again start Morgan and Gomez in the same game. In fact, with Boogs on the team I might not ever start Gomez again this season. I do like Gomez as a bench player, however. Counsell is going nowhere this year, and will certainly retire to take an organizational job next season. So, the only option is to put Wilson on waivers. He will almost certainly clear them at this point in the season. Assign him to AAA and play him every day at ss. Next year he's your Counsell type on the 25 man, if he shows himself capable at ss in AAA. Call up Green to replace Wilson and immediately implement a platoon at 3rd with McGehee. Send Gamel back down today to continue to play 1B. He said on the radio in a pregame interview the other day he is much more comfortable at 1st than 3rd and it feels like a natural position for him. Meanwhile, Doug can continue to look for a Luke Scott type in a deadline deal. If he gets someone like that, McGehee, Boggs, or Green can be sent down depending on who's playing best/worst. I'm starting to feel confident Green will be on the team after the All Star break.
  20. I think over the Break they will decide upon a strategy for what to do with Betancourt and McGehee. It could be as simple as playing Wilson at ss most days and sending Casey to Nashville for 20 days to "work on his swing"....
  21. I bet they hobble along with McGehee until the All Star break, then barring a miraculous turnaround, Green is brought up and Casey sent down to "work on his swing" or some such line. Did anybody catch RR on the radio pregrame the other day saying Gamel is playing 1st in AAA but may have to go back to playing some third?
  22. So what you're saying is, in clutch situations McCann hits like Ryan Braun does in every situation.
  23. I dunno....could be starting another lefty, Counsell, at 3B and Wilson at ss.......
  24. The last two weeks they had bad road starts from Marcum and Yo, and now two horrible road starts from Greinke. In this stretch the offense has been better on the road, but it's hard to win games when the pitching staff gives 10-12 runs. Hopefully Marcum is healthy and these 4 lopsided road losses were just hiccups. The schedule gets easier after interleague, so look for the road record to improve.
  25. Hardy's OPS is .907.Hardy doesn´t have enough ABs to qualify for the batting title, etc. Which is why I didn´t include him. I figured as much, but the guy has been terrific since returning from the DL.
